Sandusky scandal: Police may have evidence of hundreds of crimes?

Posted: 08:13 AM ET

In Session contributor Sara Ganim reports that Jerry Sandusky’s book helped investigators identify sex abuse victims, and that police may have evidence of hundreds of criminal charges that will not be prosecuted against the former Penn State assistant football coach.

Click here to read Sara Ganim’s entire article, including the criticism of Pennsylvania Governor Tom Corbett and accusations that he slowed the three-year investigation into the Penn State child abuse sex scandal when he was the state’s attorney general and was running for governor.

The irony of his book being named , " Touched " is too much . It should have been called ,untouchable . The laws concerning the statute of limitations should be changed by Congress , now !!!!!!! The American people have to be strong and say we are not taking this anymore !!!!!!! Laws concerning the safety of children have to be a priority !!!! There are too many people with children either missing or abused . We should no longer tolerate this epidemic !!!!!!! There are people literally getting away with murder or horrifying abuse !!!!!!!

Belinda   January 10th, 2012 8:30 pm ET

There should be a federal investigation into every one who slowed this case down and charges should be filed quickly !!!!

Rob   January 11th, 2012 2:36 pm ET

What I want to know is, what happened to the "boy in the shower" in the 2002 molestation incident? Why has he not come forward or been identified after such massive publicity? Did Sandusky or someone else get rid of him so he could not be a witness? Wouldn't surprise me.

Rob   January 12th, 2012 3:43 am ET

I also want to know what happened to the boy in the shower who was seen being molested in 2002. With all of the publicity and investigations it seems incredible he has not come forward or been located.

Mike   January 12th, 2012 2:48 pm ET

I doubt if Sandusky or anybody else "got rid of him". You'll have to find another far-fetched conspiracy to obsess on. Good luck with that.

Maybe he doesn't want the publicity. Maybe he has a lawyer who has told him not to talk. Maybe, he is waiting to have his say in court. Maybe he has moved on with his life and has no desire to rip open the wound of being abused.

Glen   January 13th, 2012 11:14 am ET

Nothing would surprise me about this case. Other pedophiles have committed murder. If Sandusky is capable of the depraved crimes enumerated in the Grand Jury account he is capable of anyting.

Mike   January 13th, 2012 1:30 pm ET

This scandel will drag on until Pennsylvania stops shielding Penn State documents from the freedon of information act. They are aiding in covering up the crimes done by all the guilty parties of the Penn State college community and administration. The crimes are who did what AND who knew what, but chose to sacrifice the well being of children over the financial interests of Penn State. The NCAA should cancel any Penn State sports activities until the hidden documents are made public. Pressure on the purse always works wonders.

Scott   January 13th, 2012 3:24 pm ET

This guy, along with many many other American men are the ones out there crying about busts like "To Catch A Predator" is "entrapment". OK then, what were they planning on doing if Hansen and his cameras were NOT in that house they all showed up at? Several of them were big guys, aggressive when questioned by Hansen and some threatened violence.

So yeah, let's keep protecting these guys and making up excuses for them and their actions. But women aren't off the hook either – female pedophiles are popping up over the place too, Incestuous crap, even.

I just voted today on saying "No" Joe Paterno should not be given
his salary to the end of the year. I believe Joe did go to his bosses
and told them what McCreary told him, however, I don't think for one
minute that he didn't know what Sandusky stood for. You don't work
so closely with someone and not know what they are like. Why did
Joe tell Sandusky that he would never take his place as coach at
Penn State????? Did Joe have the authority to say who would take
his place when he left? I don't think so. Didn't he and others think
it strange that Sandusky was always taking kids different places?
The bottom line is the almight dollar and that is what kept everyone quiet for all these years.

God bless all the victims of this horrendous tragedy!

Gil   January 14th, 2012 4:03 am ET

What makes me angry is that while two other administrators are facing charges, Paterno is getting off scott free–with a fat pension to boot. Just because he won ball games. Paterno was just as complicit in the cover up. All tthree–Paterno, Schultz and Curley–made the joint decision to keep the matter in house and keep investigators in the dark.

Devil's advocate   January 15th, 2012 12:56 pm ET

I know I will be villified but I feel compelled to speak. As a LEO and human, I understand the need for justice. I believe sex offenders and pedophiles must be dealt with swiftly and with the protection of the victims and possible future victims in mind. But we can not and must not rush to pass unrealistic and overly restrictive new laws, that is not the answer. I have experienced several cases of false allegations that have caused devistation of many lives. I have experienced many other cases of the "system" failing the victims. I have seen the effects from both sides of the situations. I believe whole heartedly, from all that I have read, that this man is a true serial offender who needs to be taken off the street for the rest of his lift. But, children need to be taught that they CAN talk to their parents, a friend, someone who WILL put a stop to the abuse. If one or more of these true victims had felt strong enough to tell, many of these other children would not have been shattered by this pathetic excuse of a man.

Penn State Alum   January 15th, 2012 7:29 pm ET

I case we are getting a bit blind, I think this stuff is happening all over. The rich and the powerful be they corporations, institutions or individuals have used campaign financing support to progressively "buy down" the rules of America. There is absolutely no reason why a publicilly funded educational institution should be shielded by law from disclosure rules none. There is no reason that banks should have been allowed to expand their leverage to 40-to-1 or that dead billionaires (Stienbrenner) should enjoy an almost unique estate tax exemption.

It is more than time for the 99% to hold the politicians accountable.

Cyrus   January 16th, 2012 7:56 pm ET

Sanduky!!!!!!! My boy!! You sure know how to make little boys feel welcome.....you sick freak. You have out done MJ 100 times over...wow

Independent Jim   January 17th, 2012 1:27 pm ET

Sandusky did his evil with Joe Paterno haveing full knowledge of what could be going on .. Joe Paterno needs to be held accountable for his lack of action to see that Sanduskt was prosecuted .. dont be fooled .. Nothing went on at Penn State with out the approval of Joe Paterno ,,Joe told every one at Penn State what to do and when to do it ..if there was a failure to prosecute Sandusky it was because Joe didnt want the facts known

Glen   January 18th, 2012 1:26 pm ET

Yeah, Paterno only told the other two because he wanted to alert them to the "problem" of a witness to Sandusky's well-known proclivities.

All three men then decided to contain the "problem" by keeping it in-house, making a real investigation impossible. So they threw a promotion at McQueary to placate him, then forgot about the whole incident. No punishment would be too extreme for these rats.

jimdevo   January 18th, 2012 6:18 pm ET

Unfortuneatly Joe Paterno ain't gonna live long enough to see one moment of this trial.

mrshl5000   January 19th, 2012 8:59 am ET

Why our esteemed government doesn't administer the death penalty ASAP makes no real sense at all. HOORAY for the legal system.

Jon   January 19th, 2012 1:11 pm ET

Okay, McQueary saw the crime being committed, McQueary told Paterno, Paterno told Curley & Schultz, and Curley & Schultz said they would take care of it. Did McQueary or Paterno ever think to follow up to see what had been done?

These people all made bag loads of money over the past decade, and they barely get a slap on the wrist.
Another great reason to get a job at a university – especially in the athletics department.

Protection and jobs for life!

ace   January 19th, 2012 9:02 pm ET

The witness to the boy in the shower Mcleary was promoted to assistant coach to keep him quiet, How much money donations poured in and how much capital expenditures transpire for all this years of cover up,

sue   January 23rd, 2012 3:01 pm ET

As a victim of abuse, I can tell you that even the best of parents don't know sometimes. Anyone, absolutely anyone who works with children should be finger printed and put into a national database so that employers can look them up to see their history when they apply to work with children. Why are our children so unimportant? Is it because they don't vote? Is it because we are bigger and stronger. Don't you think it is time we start proving to our children how important they are instead of just paying lip service?

roy   January 25th, 2012 7:46 am ET

Paterno was "the big guy" @ Penn State, for an old men to hear what Sandusky did to these kids must have freaked him out beyond believe, therefore he buried his head in the sand, and covered up the allegations against Sandusky.

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, B.A., J.D., S.P.J   January 25th, 2012 11:32 pm ET

This case underscores what Psychiatric Study after Psychiatric Study have confirmed, that: "Over 80% of men who molest little boys identify themselves as heterosexual, love football and are married to women. It is to bad that Joe Paterno did not live as he belongs in the same cage as Jerry. in 50 years as a coach he had "never heard of anything like it." Given that thousands of men had sex with each other in the Penn State At6hletic Dept showers, it somehow surprised JoPa that Jerry who admits that he likes to get naked and "horse around" with 7 and 8 year old boys in the shower didn't suspect a thing. This Football creep JoPa is also the likely reason that the FBI has failed and refused to invoke the Mann Act and the Dyer Act in prosecuting Jerry for bringing young boys across state lines via his charity for anal probing by good ol' Uncle Jerry. Because these atrocities took place for years in Penn State Showers, after notice to Penn state officials, Penn State is 100% liable to these kids for what happened. Jo Paterno is a great guy, just like John Wayne Gacy and Jeffrey Dahmer. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, B.A., J.D., S.P.J.

Gil   January 26th, 2012 4:12 am ET

I hate to speak ill of the dead, but I find it unconscionable that Paterno never apologized for his role in keeping the molestation scandal under wraps.

It's hard to believe that he wouldn't want to clear his conscience. Or maybe he was just in such deep denial that he couldn't admit his role as a child abuse enabler.

At any rate if Paterno was really the moral paragon he claimed to be, he would have realized he owed the victims an apology.

JonDough   January 26th, 2012 3:25 pm ET

It is clear that when the select few knew that Paterno's days were numbered, they decided to let this bag of perversions out. I agree with a previous comment that charges should be leveled against those who covered this horrific mess up. The other piece of crap will be "horsing around" in prison.

Glen   January 26th, 2012 5:38 pm ET

Agree that Paterno (along with Mcqueary, Spanier, etc) should have issued a public apology. I guess when men get that much power corruption sets in and they can't conceive or admit to their own wrongdoing.

I also think that a separate investigation should be launched to find out what happened to the boy in the shower. What if he were a victim of foul play? Jerry Sandusky knew he has been seen victimizing this kid. Sandusky would have a motive to get silence him.

Justin Wonderin   January 27th, 2012 8:55 pm ET

I wonder why Sandusky has not hung himself yet. To the question of why the shower victim has not come forward, it is not up to any one else to decide. The shame associated with this sort of thing can keep a person silent for life. Being at the center of something this big will only victimize him again and I can completely understand the desire to not have the world know that this sick monster and gotten to me either.

paz   January 28th, 2012 4:43 pm ET

Maybe the reason some of these boys and men have not come forward is that they were threatened with their lives or that of their loved ones when they were abused.
This threat is pretty typical of perpetrators and becomes ingrained in surviors minds. There may be survivors who have even left the country for fear of their lives.

Linda T   January 31st, 2012 8:33 pm ET

look they can change the venue but the jury will know what's what...if this guy is as dirty as it appears, there is only one punishment...life in prison or death...child preditors are NEVER "cured" the recidivism rate is pretty close to 100% for this crime...stick him and his enabling wife in the same cell in a supermax and leave em there for eternity.....and as far as Joe Paterno is concerned....he told his supervisors...now maybe he should have called the cops, but so should have the 23 yr old who witnessed the crime...this was no "child" who "saw something and ran to tell his daddy"" as was initially reported........2 wrongs don't make a right but the man is dead and God is dealing with him as we speak....the monster is the one who DID the crime ...let's not forget the REAL CRIMINAL

Mike from Calgary   February 1st, 2012 9:35 pm ET

The Governors fired Joe Paterno because he didn't sweep the accusations (hearsay) under the rug but referred it up so that police could investigate. If there was inaction at Penn State, it was not for lack of dilgence by Paterno.

Glen   February 3rd, 2012 4:13 am ET

If Paterno really wanted "police" to "investigate" the crime, wouldn't he have gone straight to qualified police investigators? Why would Paterno only tell a couple of his cronies? Why go through a middle man? Why keep the allegations within the university?

BTW that idiot Schultz was not "police". He was an upper level bureaucrat. And a useless one at that.

Real policemen carry badges and guns, are qualified to make arrests, and are sworn to uphold the law. None of which applies to Schultz.

Shendog   February 3rd, 2012 12:04 pm ET

I am so sick of people blaming Paterno for this! Yes a terrible tragedy has occurred here, and agree that key officials in the Penn State administration actively sought to hide it from the public. However Paterno had very little involvement in this. All Paterno knew was that Mceary had accused Sandusky of inappropriate activity with all child. He had no first hand knowledge of what actually transpired, or how sure Mceary was of what he saw. Given this information he took the correct action, and informed his superiors.

With the Head of Athletics, The President of PSU, and campus security all aware of this matter; it would have been perfectly reasonable to assume it was being investigated properly. Paterno didn't know what was being done, and didn't want to know.

The Person most Guilty of allowing these abuses to continue (other than Sandusky himself) is Mceary! He is the only person who truely knows what he witnessed in the locker room, and how sure he is of what he saw. He failed to stop the attack, and he failed to contact the police.

Glen   February 4th, 2012 5:04 am ET

Your post is irrational in so many ways. Let's take your first assertion: that Paterno "had very little to do with all this." Excuse me, but didn't the alleged crime take place in Paterno's own locker facilities? And didn't Paterno receive a fresh eyewitness account of the crime, from a trusted subordinate?

From the moment Paterno heard of this horrific act he had a moral duty to call 911 IMMEDIATELY (not 24 hours later), so that pollice investigators could learn the identity of the victim, determine whether he was still in danger from Sandusky.

If Paterno "had very little to do with this" it was because he didn't want to. It was Paterno's decision to abdicate his moral duty.

So you really thing McQueary was the one who made the mistake not calling police? So why did Paterno praise McQueary's decision?

Paterno said to him "you did the right thing coming to me." When he should have said "call 911 right now, dummy!"

oxbowbend   February 7th, 2012 7:02 am ET

Missing, killed, kidnapped, raped, sodomized children. Law enforcement is too busy seizing assets and arresting pot smokers to be interested in this kind of crime. They don't get bonuses for arresting "real" criminals.
