Girlfriends? Prosecution needs to stay on target

Posted: 11:18 AM ET

Commentary by Manny Arora, special to HLN

The evidence to this point seems very strong in favor of the prosecution.

I do worry though that the government is piling on from every angle on Dr. Conrad Murray and sometimes seems to lose focus as to what elements need to be proven to obtain a conviction.

Specifically, the government needs to focus on the fact that Dr. Murray obtained the propofol under false pretenses through Tim Lopez's Las Vegas pharmacy.

Propofol is not used outside the hospital setting and we've heard testimony that there are no medical reasons that would authorize the legitimate use of this drug out of the hospital.

Going into Dr. Murray's personal life, while arguably salacious, moves the jurors' eyes off the target.

Do you agree that yesterday's testimony distracted jurors from the larger issues? Tell us on Twitter @HLNTV or at Facebook.com/HLN.

I think at this point prosecution is showing Murray's lack of integrity.

Siobhan   October 5th, 2011 11:35 am ET

It doesn't matter that Michael was a drug addict. As a doctor, Conrad Murray should not have had those drugs within Michael's reach and was grossly neglecting Michael's care. Murray NEVER should have left MICHAEL ALONE! Those phone calls shouldn't have been MORE IMPORTANT than treating his patient.

I wish people would get off of Michael's drug addiction and focus on the doctor who was responsible for Michael's care which resulted in LACK OF CARE for Michael's life! WHAT DOCTOR WOULD LEAVE THEIR PATIENT ALONE TO DIE?

If Murray had been in THAT room and followed PROPER procedures...LIKE CALLING 911 MICHAEL WOULD STILL BE HERE!!!!

Kathy bernard   October 5th, 2011 11:51 am ET

One of Murray's girlfriend heard coughing over the phone is possible why Michael Jackson died with his eyes and mouth open.

J. Davis   October 5th, 2011 11:56 am ET

I think the girlfriends are relevant as this shows the immoral life this man leads. It all makes me wonder how this man ever became a doctor. He's a real sleazeball. That girlfriend he currently lives with was a joke on the stand–it was just fun and games for her and a chance to show her figure. He should get more than 4 years for this unspeakable treatment of Michael Jackson.

Hey now wait a minute, Manny author-guy: These were timeline witnesses. It is only the sexist, dirty minds of people and Defense attys that make it falsely salacious. What if these calls had been made to/by male friends... Would they receive the same scrutiny??

I don't think the jurors were distracted, i think they know now what distracted Murray from his patients needs. He had three women on his hands. I also see why he needed the money, I really don't think the juror was distracted I think they knew exactly what they were seeing and what it meant to the case. He should have been in the room with Michael, he should have called 911 immediately, he should have had a crash cart or something available for Michael, he knew the kinds of drugs Michael was taking. 150,000 he did not CPR, and never did mouth to mouth all he knew was the money he was making. He could have helped Michael get the help he needed. Michael needed to be in a hospital, I believe the doctor and many others were taking advantage of Michael. It's sad Michael wanted to take this concert money and build a Children's Hosptial.

daniele   October 5th, 2011 4:52 pm ET

The girlfriends are relevant because of the phone records, and the fact that Propofol was shipped to one's residence. The prosecution is being very kind in not labeling them STRIPPERS, or worse.

Jamie   October 5th, 2011 4:56 pm ET

After yesterday's testimony of Conner Murray's girlfriends, I think his wife should add 'adultry' to his other charge!

Deborah   October 5th, 2011 7:14 pm ET

Why would Conrad Murray intentionally leave or let M.J. alone to die? He would then be not be raking in $150,000 a month, duh.

LaFrederick Thirkill   October 5th, 2011 7:31 pm ET

I must say that if the recording is of Michael when he was severely drugged up, the conversation was a focused and coherent one. His aspirations were clear even if his voice wasn't. Most druggies talk nonsense when they are stoned.
