Joy Behar: Michael Jackson's story reminds me of Judy Garland

Posted: 10:35 AM ET

Joy Behar

The Conrad Murray trial (and the events surrounding Michael Jackson’s death) is fascinating and compelling, but also heartbreaking. Just listen to what’s revealed in that recording of Michael’s voice when he was apparently under the influence of drugs - when he talks about his desire to put on an unforgettable show for his fans and his need to be seen as the greatest entertainer in the world, you can get a sense of the tremendous pressure the poor guy was under.

Michael’s tragic story reminds me of Judy Garland in a way. All the talent and popularity in the world, but she never seemed to get over the trauma caused by her lost childhood. Adored and loved by millions but not by herself, sadly.

Being thrust into that kind of limelight and forced to deal with those kinds of pressures at such an early age can take a toll on people, as it obviously did with both of these performers.

I spoke with Thomas Mesereau, who defended Michael Jackson in his 2005 child molestation trial, about this trial:

Thomas Mesereau tells me what he thinks about Dr. Conrad Murray:

Complete coverage of the Conrad Murray trial live on HLN from gavel to gavel and on In Session from 9a to 3p ET every week day.

These antiquated IV's that Dr. C used to the best of my knowledge have a cut of valve to stop the flow of "milk" in this case. It is a little piece of plastic that serves as a clamp. My best guess? Dr C wanted to leave the room and cut the flow of propothol. MJ wakes up almost immediately..yet groggy. He is desperate for sleep and tried to open drip himself with wheel. Nothing happens, he finds the clamp opens it and a full flow of medication enters MJ...he dies before his eyes close..cause of death...overdose propothol...Makes sense to me

He couldnt been tryin to resuscitate Mike J too bad.. when he was giving him CPR which he had never done... He still had to remove the I-V to put the man on the ground to administer CPR correctly. Trying to resuscitate a man with a I-V of profofol still in his leg... Gotta use my encyclopedia brown.. Murder?

Michael Jackson's Story also reminds me of Elvis Presley. Elvis knew what he was taking was probably going to take him at some point but he wasn't willing to let it go. He was addicted. His doctors were giving it to him when he asked for it. How can someone stop taking things that they are addicted to if a doctor is willing to hand it over on command.
Same thing with Michael. Dr Murray came running when michael asked for Profol. He threw money at the dr and he came running. if doctors had told Michael NO! then that would have had to be the end of it. But i have a feeling many didn't tell him no.
Michael like elvis knew what this stuff could and probably would evidentally do to him if not stopped, but he didn't stop cause he was addicted. He was sad. So was Elvis. They didn't know how to stop.

i still play michae's cd's in my car... i was so excited for the this is it tour...i'm so sad he went the propofol route to help himself...i'm so sad murray went this route also..

mike..you'll always be the king of pop!

I am one hundred percent sure that Michael Jackson took his own life. I guess he would not live any longer.

Mary Anne Landers   September 30th, 2011 5:45 pm ET

Another coincidence: Judy Garland died on June 22, 1969-just three days short of exactly forty years before Michael Jackson died.

GSinPS   September 30th, 2011 8:40 pm ET

Oh puhleeze! Thank you Dr. Bahar for your brilliant psychological autopsy of these two great superstars who, incidentally, were not in a state of psychological trauma at the time of their deaths. Judy Garland was just plain old unlucky when it came to her dosage at that particular time. Stop promoting this image of Judy as a tragic figure. Judy did not hate her life or have a death wish. Judy was working up to the day she died. Her death was more a result of a long list of managers and others who had drained her of her hard earned wealth and forced her to work a schedule that was impossible to maintain without a constant infusion of pills. Her employer, MGM, started giving her benzedrine at the age of 15 and she never got off of speed and the sleeping pills she needed to try to rest. If Judy was so unhappy as you say, why do all the people who worked with her say she was bright, happy and extemely witty and funny? She was also the world's greatest entertainer. Go pedal your sob story somewhere else.

Did I just hear Joy's guest (blond woman) say MJ was weird not having a current partner before his death, being too private, not having a normal life??etc... Well us in our 40s'-60's don't always need to be married or have a current partner. We get set in our ways and it's not always easy to find your soul mate as you get up in years. Besides, having 3 young children keep you very busy and is very rewarding in itself. MJ was a brilliant artist and had problems that many people have as one ages. Insomnia, body aches and pains are much too common and unfortunately he did not make a good choice in physicians.

I agree he is guilty of negligence.

I have seen the EMT testify and heard them say that the Doctor was asked if Michael had any medical conditions.

Michael Jackson had Lupus and it caused him health problems. The dermatologist that treated him had mentioned this on an interview. The nurse who was mother to some of his children worked for this dermatologist.

Lupus is a serious illness and causes many health problems that can interfere with sleep and cause pain. Staying out of the sun for those with photo-sensitivity is a must. I see Michael with parasols, gloves and masks, this indicates he may have had the form that is photo sensitive. His death could have been more than the medicines, Lupus could have contributed.

A doctor is supposed to take the patient history and his medical condition into account and should have relayed this to the EMT. He also needed to call them early. He should lose his license. Dr Murray acted with incompetence. He does not deserve the title doctor.

I am not one and I would not have been so negligent and greedy.

Michael Jackson took the drugs in my belief to obtain sleep and also to stifle severe stress over the upcoming This is It Tour. If Michael were to succeed he would then be able to bring himself back from obscurity, and mockery. His dream to become the greatest entertainer in the world killed him.

jina   October 2nd, 2011 10:54 pm ET

why didn't michael jackson's family fire dr Murray i'm a big fan of his he would still be alive it weren't for this doctor. he needs his license taking away from him . michael jackson doesn't need his past or anything like that brought up . let him rest in peace what kind of doctor his he should know not to move patient or press on his chest without help or cpr

Suzi   October 3rd, 2011 6:38 am ET

There is a bigger question here. How can any dr, let alone a cardiac dr, not know how to do cpr. Its basic stuff they learn in bed school. You need to look into his credentials and find out what school/board accredited this man as a dr if he didn't know how to do cpr. This incompetance may also explain why he killed MJ with propyfol overdose. MJs family should not only sue this Dr but any school/board that accredited a DOCTOR who didn't know how to do CPR.

Paul   October 3rd, 2011 2:04 pm ET

Respect for Michael. Too much pain for one innocent man. Heal the world!

brandi   October 4th, 2011 2:44 pm ET

something was missing in his life and his soul. I grieve for
him. They should be able to help addicts better than they
do.

Limbo   October 8th, 2011 2:05 am ET

Doctor murray acted so unproffessional, how can a qualified dr live a patient unattended that has been injected medicine that needs to be administered.its a sign of negligence.this doctor was just fishing for money,he drugged the singer with a powerful sedative, after michael signed a fat cheque of money it seems transaction was taking place that's why he took so long not calling 911.his bank accounts must also be investigated, if was the any money trasactions durring that period.this was a planned manslaughter,he deserve much more than 4year in prison,at least the doctor must given the same injection that he gave the star, any short minedperson would be jearous of a tallented person like jm.shame to you doctor.the will be nobody like him in this world, people like michael the don't die natural deaths alway are being killed.rich people, music stars alway are being targeted.think of the star tu-pac,he was killed to,my conclusion give dr murray the same injections also that was found in michael's body.he is a proffesional kill,he is not doing it for the first time.

Renee   October 8th, 2011 6:59 am ET

It appears to me that Jermaine is correct in his belief the Murray is just a fall guy. Michael wasn't listening to his family and their very real concerns (Janet, Jermaine, and I believe Kathryn went to Michael's Nevada home to beg him to get help a year before the death), but you are right someone should have intervened. Those surrounding Michael, the one's that he 'trusted' who were paying the check that should have intervened. History has proven how much a celebrity is worth dead, and when they die tragically, even more memorable. Marilyn Monroe's death...She was a liability however. Stopping there. She had doctor's supposedly being taking care of her. Who had started getting pain by the studio of her last film. The Celebrity factor ways big. Money reigns supreme. Both of these stars had battled 'issues'. Both of these star just wanted to be loved by their fans. Both desperate, and both were worked to death. Squeeze every penny.
