Casey Anthony’s father returns to the stand, questioned about missing gas cans

Posted: 02:42 PM ET

Orlando, FL – The prosecution in the Orlando murder trial of 25-year-old Casey Anthony is moving along at a fast clip.  On Thursday, jurors heard from a total of nine witnesses.  Most were friends of the defendant; a few had been romantically involved with her.

One of the defendant’s ex-boyfriends, Anthony Lazzaro, returned to the stand Thursday morning.  He described Caylee Anthony as a bright child and Casey Anthony as a good mother.  Lazzaro was shocked when the news of Caylee Anthony’s disappearance and her mom’s arrest broke on July 16, 2008.  He repeated that he smelled nothing unusual when Casey Anthony opened her trunk on June 23, 2008.  Lazzaro was recalled for a proffer at the end of the day and revealed that Casey once told him that her brother had tried to molest her, and that her father had struck her.

Casey Anthony’s father, George Anthony, made his second appearance on the stand after initially testifying on Tuesday.  On the morning of June 24, 2008, he discovered that a storage shed in his yard had been vandalized and two gasoline cans were missing from the shed.  George Anthony reported the theft to authorities that same day.  Later that afternoon, he was surprised when Casey Anthony suddenly showed up at his house.  He said that prior to that visit, he had not seen the defendant since June 16, 2008.  When he asked about Caylee, Casey was evasive.

George Anthony attempted to retrieve something from the trunk of Casey Anthony’s car, but the defendant tried to keep him away.  When he persisted, she opened the trunk herself and took out the missing cans.  George Anthony testified that his daughter yelled, “Here are your f***ing gas cans! . . . I needed them.”  George Anthony smelled nothing but gasoline from Casey Anthony’s trunk.  He also admitted that he is “probably” the person who put a piece of duct tape on the metal gas can to cover a vent with a missing stopper.  George Anthony reiterated that he learned that Caylee Anthony was missing on July 15, 2008.

Ricardo Morales dated the defendant in early 2008.  Casey Anthony frequently spent the night at his townhouse through April of that year.  Even after the couple broke up, they kept in contact.  Casey Anthony would occasionally come over.  She slept at his home the nights of June 7, 9, and 10.  He last saw Caylee Anthony on the morning of June 10.  Morales also saw Casey Anthony on July 15, when she picked him up at the airport recalling, “She was the same as she always was . . . happy.”  He noted the defendant said nothing about her daughter being missing.  Under cross-examination, the defense presented Morales with a photo with the caption “Win Her Over With Chloroform” that he had supposedly posted on his MySpace page.

Several of Casey Anthony’s friends took the stand Thursday including Melissa England, Troy Brown, Iassen Donov, Dante Salati, Christopher Stutz and Matthew Crisp.  All of them testified to Casey Anthony’s “happy” demeanor in June and July of 2008.

Okay, George Anthony is lying. How could he personally see maggots through a trash bag that he never opened?
He said he could see the P and Z through the white trash bag which was somewhat translucent and he could see the Arm and Hammer logo through the plastic but he never opened the bag.
Then how did he "personally" see maggots?

Diane Sower   May 27th, 2011 3:00 pm ET

Obviously this girl has problems and issues, but, so does the rest of the family. I think from what the defense is going to produce, George's mistress, who may very well confirm the drowning story, we have reasonable doubt. As a juror, and I've been one three times, I would be very hesitant to have someone put to death with this much doubt being thrown around.

Larry   May 27th, 2011 3:07 pm ET

How come nobody mentions taking off the spare tire lid and looking in that compartment. This is where the smell could have come from and when they got the car home they could have removed the body and placed it in the woods.

Tom   May 27th, 2011 3:09 pm ET

The physical evidence doesn't support the defense's story of what happened. I don't really think there's any doubt that the childs' body was in the trunk of Casey's car. As we've seen, since even before the trial started, the issue about the car trunk one remains the main area of contention for the defense because there's no logical way to explain why the child's body would have been in the trunk of the car and still have that senario apply logically to their story. It simply makes no sense. The defense has already admitted that Casey will lie about anything. Well, if she'll lie about anything, then she'll lie about everything, all in an effort to try to save herself. The jury has no reason, or proof to believe her story. Besides, who would sit in jail for 2 years for something they now claim was an "accident"? Makes no sense to me.

Robin   May 27th, 2011 3:11 pm ET

why is George Anthony unloading to Birch and not to the police if he is so concerned? Afterall he called them out for 50$ missing gas cans but not his precious grandbaby. And what is so huge that he believes it will split up his family? he makes the statement that "We'll probably get divorced over this" before anything is supposed to be known by him or Cindy. You don't divorce over a towed car or an awall daughter and granddaughter. You set out to find them. But he doesn't. Cindy is the one searching not the former cop!! And what family patriarch tries to kill himself just when his family needs him the most? Lots of unanswered questions that just don't seem to add up. All together it looks more like an unintended tragedy.

romario robinson   May 27th, 2011 3:20 pm ET

I would love to know who was the last person to have contact with that banket that the lady from ascot that said she seen in the back seat

mcnertny   May 27th, 2011 3:24 pm ET

Most amusing the questions about the nature of the questioning by jose biaz,,,anyone familiar with life in miami knows the arrogance of the cuban male and culture,,why english and "norte americanos " are treated with contempt in the crime and drug capital of north america

Wendy   May 27th, 2011 3:27 pm ET

The Gal from the Check cashing place said there was a blanket in the back seat of that car...What did it look like?..Where did it go??? The state showed pics of the back seat with a car seat and shoes....

Casey never had the ability to be by that car once it was towed...

Where did that blanket go? When were those pics of the back seat taken...who took them. It is said that Caley was found with a Winne the pooh blanket....Where did that blanket go??

carol   May 27th, 2011 3:35 pm ET

Whether Casey killed her daughter or not has yet to be proved, but Casey's father comes across as a phoney, he was deliberatley being argumentive with the defense and would not answer a question with a straight answer even when shown his deposition answers.
Why didn't Mr. Anthoney or the impound man call the police when they noticed the smell of a "decomposing body". Anthoney was a veteran police officer and the other man is a self professed expert on dead bodies; not to mention the fact that Anthoney suspected foul play with his comment of "I hope it isn't Casey or Caylee", or was he setting the stage for something else.
There is something not right with the whole trial, you have witnesses, the Anthoneys', sitting and hearing all the testimoney, the judge is giving Anthoney an awfull lot of leeway with his answers and it appears the judge has made up his mind on guilt already.

Michele Culler   May 27th, 2011 3:49 pm ET

I have followed this story from the beginning and remember just about everything I have heard. I am fascinated with the trial, but feel that it being on television is very bad because most of the people are either playing for the camera or can't act normal because they are on television. Why is this on television anyway? It is obvious that this Casey Anthony probably accidently killed her daughter, put her somewhere for a while and then put her in the car, removed her from the car, and then left the car at Amscot. She had Lazaro pick her up at Amscot because she ran out of gas, take her to her house where she broke into the shed to get the cans, as he testified. They never went back and put gas into the car and she left the car there and after that just stayed at his place or anywhere she could, not going home. They are not touching on a lot of these things. Jose Baez should know a story teller when he sees one, but defense attorneys are notorios and they can know things without telling, which to me is wrong. He is harrassing George Anthony and I think this will hurt Casey very badley because it has been on TV so much, there is not a person who has not seen it. I am upset with George Anthony because he is allowing this Baez character to intimidate him, so therefore, I am turning off the TV right now, can't take this stupidity any longer and watching Casey sit there throwing her family under the bus, costing the state a lot of money, and just looking stupid, makes me ill.

Ameadow   May 27th, 2011 3:49 pm ET

Talk about a dog with a bone...Baez, is a nutcase. Is he determined by nagging George to trick him into a secret answer? Give me a break, last car I picked up in a tow yard.. we took a gas can i"in case" it needed gas...and I certainly dont remember if it had tape on it.. Maybe I should check. Just in case someone is murdered. Baez.. is a JOKE!

marlene   May 27th, 2011 3:52 pm ET

I think she is such a good liar that Jose Baez believes her. I do not believe her, if you have seen Cindy Anthony, she is a very strong woman, do you honestly believe she wouldn't know sexual abuse was going on? Can you believe she would've stayed with George? No way! She is no way afraid of George or anyone she would have no reason to "hide" sexual abuse!

shae   May 27th, 2011 3:57 pm ET

I am so proud of George Anthony. Facing Baez in this trial. I notice that George is defending himself greatly. I was thinking that he would help defend his daughter but after the way Baez slandered George in the openning HE knows that HE has to take care of HIMSELF, Cause Casey isnt goin down alone I see.....
I pray to the Lord abov that someone will be brought to justice for this little babys sake. If Casey is the guilty party, let the truth be revealed SOON!!!!!

TERI   May 27th, 2011 3:58 pm ET

How can the judge allow George to sit there on the stand and lie, when he, George, is sitting right there in the courtroom listening to the previous testimony of the other witnesses that clearly contradict him. Then allow him to become more and more argumentative with the defense. GA keeps saying 'you are trying to trick me.' If he is not trying to hide something, why would one think they are being tricked?

Joice   May 27th, 2011 4:11 pm ET

I remember Casey telling her mom that George has been nothing but the best father and grandfather.

Lilnyer   May 27th, 2011 4:11 pm ET

UH he called the police the same day he realized his gas cans were missing but he didn't call the police when he retrieved the car from the towing yard and smelled what reminded him of decomposing humans and had no idea where his daughter and grandchild were. That makes no sense.

TERI   May 27th, 2011 4:27 pm ET

Is the state's attorney representing George Anthony or trying to find out the truth in this case? Because it sure is looking like he represents George.

lynda   May 27th, 2011 4:29 pm ET

casey anthoy case.....question is, with the technology of cell phone records & tower locations and it has been established that caylee last see with casey morning of 6/16 by george anthony and later that day casey at blockbuster with anthony lazzaro at 6:30 pm...wouldn't that show timeline of caylees death and possibly where? casey couldn't have not used her cell phone for 8+ hrs.

Teresa Vetrone   May 27th, 2011 4:36 pm ET

I,like a lot of others, believe Casey sedated the little girl Caylee on a regular basis, but she miscalulated and her daughter expired. Being a detatched kind of personality, Casey was able to blunt her feelings regarding the horrible event and carry on as if all was well. No doubt sheloved the child as much as she could love anyone . The lure of the good life was overwhelmingly appealing to her . The young woman is mentally ill and deserves some compassion and also to be able to live out her life in prison and perhaps sort all this out in treatment. I, for one, am praying for Casey.

Barb   May 27th, 2011 4:38 pm ET

This evil little witch should be stopped. Poor George is being treated like the suspect here and while some of her friends say what a "good mother" she(casey) is, lets NOT forget Andrea Yates & Susan Smith...... everyone said they were good mothers too.....How does she sleep at night???

Joice   May 27th, 2011 4:41 pm ET

Diane Downs–Debra Jean Mike-Andrea Yates-Susan Smith–Julie Schenecker-Deanna Laney-Theresa Cross Knorr.Mothers that KILLED their children,Casey is no different from them,a child murderer. And list goes on of mothers that KILL their kids.

Nick   May 27th, 2011 5:00 pm ET

I think the Judge not allowing the aol IM on june 10th 2008 into evidence is a mistake... after listening to the states explination as to why they want it in, it all makes sense.

The first time Tony was on the stand, he was asked, did she ever say she loved you, he replied yes, the state asked, did you ever tell her you loved her, he replied yes.

The June 10th aol IM shows he wanted to see her and she couldnt go, he said he was going to go there to her house, she said you cant, caylee is here and so are my parents, whish indicates shes locked down and cant be with him. With this being said, it gos to show without caylee around, she don;t have to answer to no one.

If you see, after Caylee went missing, she not only had the time to spend with tony, but.... she was also able to move in..... she then partied and got a tattoo... Bella Vita which in Italian means beautiful life. and thats cause..once again... she had no one to answer to at that time.

Mike   May 27th, 2011 5:03 pm ET

Elizabeth Ann Rogers, why was she back in the courtroom?

Frieda Sutherland   May 27th, 2011 5:55 pm ET

Not one commentator has touched on the fact that Casey and Kaylee lived with George and Cindy, and I'm betting the grandparents were the primary caregivers of Kaylee. What two-year old does not love her Mother who is primarily a "babysitter" having fun with the tot? It appears from testimony that Casey's activities after Kaylee's "disappearance" was normal for her in which case I can't see Casey wanting to take responsibility for Kaylee, which means living on her own, making her own decisions and supporting her daughter? She was even driving a car registered in George's name. Casey is a self-centered, spoiled brat, and there's no doubt in my mind she made up the self-serving sexual allegations against her Dad and brother.

steve ford   May 27th, 2011 5:56 pm ET

Re: Casey Anthony Trial

It seems lost on me that the witnesses describing the "smell of human decomposition" have not been challenged by the fact that they are describing smelling an "over whelming" odor of something that is, in fact, not present at the time the car is searched and could not have been present in the car for at least the preceding 2 weeks and that this odor is somehow and presumably overwhelming the odor of a bag of rotting trash that is present and has been in the trunk for several weeks in the hot sun.

In my experiences in life and as a former law enforcement officer who has smelled both matters this distinction between the odors under these circumstances is impossible to understand and believe.

Surely it is undeniable that once the source of any odor is removed its smell would dissipate over time. That fact, combined with the introduction of a new odor source, the rotting trash, would without a doubt at least confuse the olfactory sensory in most, if not all people (otherwise how could deodorant or air freshener work?). But that does not seem to be the case here. Every witness so far smells only the "unmistakable" odor of human decomposition and nobody smells the rotten garbage at all. How can that possibly be? Not believable in my opinion!

If I were the defense I would certainly spend some time arguing this and I wonder why the Anchors and guest analysts have not broached the subject.

Janice   May 27th, 2011 6:05 pm ET

Where do you think little Caylee's body was before she was put in the car?

Kelly   May 27th, 2011 8:07 pm ET

Please- can someone answer a question for me..when they had her father on the stand yesterday and they were talking about him and Casey getting the gas cans, did either side ask George if he ask Casey where Caylee was?
Also-I thought I heard there was a juror that said she would NOT vote for the death sentence on the jury.
I also agree with the other poster who said -I would have fired Beaz right after his opening statement..he buried her with it..what a MORON!!!

Lutabell   May 27th, 2011 9:19 pm ET

I feel so sorry for George! This man has been through Hell and Baez is going to push him over the edge. What was Casey going to tell her parents about her car being abandoned and she was in Jacksonville? How would she explain that? I can't believe that Casey could keep all these lies straight!

sue   May 28th, 2011 12:10 am ET

i wouldnt have jose baez defend my dog if he bit the neighbor! i believe he's over his head...he needs to let someone else take over....

LIN   May 28th, 2011 8:19 am ET

She and she alone did this....

r. smith   May 28th, 2011 9:31 am ET

the prosecutor should ask george if his daughter ever helped with yardwork at the anthony home...if so in what capacity? why a neighbor's shovel intead of one of george's........was there an indication she was digging in the yard? was she affraid george would notice the shovel missing with the gass cans. how long did she have the neighbor's shovel...did she drive away and not return it until later?

eloisa   May 28th, 2011 9:42 am ET

I'm a bit concerned about George Anthony. Not that I think he had anything to do with Caylee's disappearance but, because each time attorney Baez examines him about the darn gas cans, he just goes around and around with his answers... "which can, sir?", "you're trying to confuse me". Come on, George, if you don't have anything to hide, a yes or no answer would be sufficient. His dislike of attorney Baez is quite evident, but his evasive answers are not looking too good to the jury right now.... get on with the program. You are trying to protect Casey and, let's facing, she thre you under the bus. Tell the truth.

sara   May 28th, 2011 7:43 pm ET

I watched Mr. Anthony and felt so bad for him that he has not only lost his only grandchild but his daughter is accusing him of terrible things. Why does anyone even believe what Casey says, she lies about everything. Mr. Anthony was great on the stand and held up under the nastiness that Mr. Baez tried to put on him. Wonder is Ms. Hostin is being paid by the defense, can see why she is on tv and not practicing. She said some very bad things about Mr. Anthony and she knows nothing except what Casey says and we all know she lies.

sue   May 30th, 2011 8:04 pm ET

toney had an apartment before he goes to new york, he said it had pool and he watched caylee swim in it in ground pool its easier for a kid to fall into pool than to climb into one when he came home from new york he moves into an apartment with 3 roommates toney picked up casey when the car was ditched he helped her break into shed to get the gas cans could he also have helped casey cover up death at his house in attempt to point the finger at george and cindy
this is a theroy only also toney wore a wire for the state to try and get casey to confess what a great way to look innocent just help the police think about it

nanci   June 1st, 2011 4:55 pm ET

casey defense cant do nothing for her right now, they have to put blame on other people cause this girl give lies a bad name. Good thing she didnt say a black man stole the child. Casey showed no respect to her parents so if her father had sexually assaulted her from the age of eight, how come she is a big woman and she still live under his roof. She should ve rented an apartment with some of those numerous men she had. i believe she killed the child cause she was selfish and jealous of the little girl, she said it because didnt people hear what she told her brother, that many times the mother told her she is an unfit mother, so I think she thought her mother would have taken the baby from her. She got Mr Bias stumbling and mumbling for words, no one cant defend her, she told too many lies and she therefore dug her grave already.

nick   June 1st, 2011 8:03 pm ET

I thought it was revealing that George Anthony testified that Casey brushed past him real quick to get the gas cans from the car. This strikes me as an odd choice of words if we assume he wants his daughter to get off. There was nobody else around at the time and even if that is the way he perceived the event he didn't have to phrase it that way. I know he's sworn in, but if he believed she was innocent or wanted her to get off wouldn't he phrase it differently? Wouldn't he just say, I was going to get the cans, but Casey said she would get them instead. It seems like his choice of words was carefully selected in such a way as to convey guilt, like she was hiding something. We can only assume that Mr. Anthony has decided to tell the whole truth as best he can and if they find her guilty so be it, or he wants to her to be found guilty. One thing for sure is he's not lying for her, if he is, he's doing a poor job of it.

theresa smith   June 2nd, 2011 2:38 pm ET

is it against the law to give these crazy people truth serum or put them under hypnosis to find the truth...

mary   June 2nd, 2011 6:56 pm ET

I think Zannie the nanny is her zanix.

lynne   June 2nd, 2011 8:04 pm ET

I believe George is allowing the defense to use the sex scandle to throw doubt. They can't prove there was any sex , so all go free. They thow doubt and no matter how many lies she will go free. I don't believe there was any sexual incounters but the jury might have doubt.

Carol   June 2nd, 2011 10:40 pm ET

I have been watching this case from the start. What mother whether a good one /bad one would wait 31 days to report their child missing, right there it makes her look really bad. If Caylee did drown in the back yard swimming pool, then it would have been determined as an accidental drowning, they would be able to figure that out by having an autopsy performed. If Casey didnt want to be bothered with Caylee why didnt she just go to George & Cindy & ask them to raise Caylee. I know that they would not have hesitated. Casey is acting like everyone else is lying & she has done nothing wrong. It's so open/shut case, she is lying about everything, & now that she has told all those lies they are catching up with her, you can tell by the way she is acting in court, shaking her head, not showing any remorse for what she had done to this child. All along she has been clawing/scratching her way through all this and as the weeks go by and she has to sit there and listen & look at all the photos of her daughter I believe reality will set in that she was not going to get out of this. When all the information has been put out there & all witness have been called & its time for the jury to do their thing & they render a verdict of Murder, then & only then I think we will see real tears from Casey. If Casey didnt commit this awful crime then why would she need to lie. If she is telling the truth then she should be able to back everything up she she has said. I dont know if she should be put to death that is not a decison I would want to make, but in the end she will have to account to God for her actions. May little Caylee rest in peace, she will not be forgotten.

Debbie   June 3rd, 2011 10:10 am ET

Why doesn't anyone pick up on the fact that she is not crying when she rubbs her eyes in the court,,, that she is pretending too !!!

Sandy   June 4th, 2011 8:36 pm ET

I don't believe the story that the baby drowned. I really think Casey gave her a little something to make her sleep and couldn't wake her.
Casey kept it a secret pretending that she was somewhere only because she's not sharp enough to face what she was responsible for.
The thing that makes me wonder the most is the tape over the child's mouth.
Casey was stupid enough to think it would never be noticed. Sure she went out and had good time but while she was out she didn't have to think.
I also don't think her father and brother had any sexual relations with her. She has a very serious problem of making up stories.

Our family had a friend who was like that. He told us that
when he was in the service his chest was blown open. He didn't have any scars. He always came up with different lies. He then admitted that he says things that aren't true and can't stop himself.

Mika   June 16th, 2011 12:11 pm ET

My speculation on this case goes like this: I think her parents also had something to do with Caylee's death. Plus I think Casey's dad is the father of Caylee. I think she has accused him before and before a parental test could have been done on him and Caylee something happened to Caylee. I think Casey's behavior of alcohol and Tatoos and Partying stems from the fact there was stress at home and she needed a release. When a child has been abused and becomes an adult they are usually have some kind of addiction because of the nightmares and the feelings of the abuse especially if she is living with the abuser. I think Casey new about her daughter's death and that flew her overboard and into hyperdrive. I think that the death could have been accidental but I dont believe her parents new nothings of it. I do believe that Lee may have not known about it. It also seems she was told to keep shut and go around like she knew nothings. The only way a person would not say anything about there children missing is if they are told to be quiet or what not by an abuser!

Gettingtothetruth   June 20th, 2011 12:05 am ET

I agree somewhat with what you said Mika...also when a man sexually abuses a female child in the family...the probability that he will sexually abuse another female in the same family is great...even as young as 12 months of age...If it is true that he sexually abused Casey...maybe he had abused Caylee too....and that is the only reason that I can think of that he would not have wanted to call 911 for help...because the Medical Examiner would have been able to find evidence of sexual abuse on Caylee...maybe he told Casey to get her things and leave for a while and not to say anything that he would take care of everything and being a former homicide detective-he would have known exactly what to do...an abused person has been known to do exactly what the abuser tells them to do...whether if it was right or wrong....they just do it...

KidLawyer   June 21st, 2011 7:49 pm ET

Ok.....i think george had alot to do with this first off he was a detective he would know just where to hide the body he hide it some what well it was hide for about a month or so thats a long time. so george and casey thought they was good that no one would find it but cindy had to call the cops which casey should have done the first day that george and her killed caylee just so that none of this would have ever happened but casey did not think it thru. Also cindy said in her last time she on the stand that george was the ONLY one who used the tape.and george's gas cans where missing well when cindy saw the gas cans after they just showed back up in the garage that the tape was missing WOW!!!! what do u know there was tape on caylee's mouth and when the trial started george tried to kill his self well WHY whould he do that?? i think cause he knows he helped with the killing and he will get charged with murder. i dont think casey will be charged with murder in the 1st degree she will get charged with the 4 counts of obstruct criminal invest-false Info and aggravated child abuse i mit only be 13 but i think i make a VERY VERY good point......

R.I.P to Caylee Marie Anthony <333
