Carolyn Mulvey remembers Hayley Petit: “She was amazingly strong, both physically and in character”

Posted: 02:43 PM ET

Atlanta, GA – Carolyn Mulvey remembers the first time she met Hayley Petit and how they instantly became close friends. She was homesick during her time in boarding school and says it was Hayley and the rest of the Petit family that made her feel at home.

“They just became my surrogate family, “said Carolyn Mulvey. “Mrs. Petit routinely sent me cookies, they took me out to family dinners and welcomed me into their home and their church… they were just amazing to me.”

Carolyn says despite Hayley’s many successes she was extremely modest and selfless.

“She was amazing, intellectually, athletically as a leader and most of all really as friend,” said Mulvey. “She was amazingly strong both physically and in character.”

Carolyn says she never expected losing Hayley in such a tragic way and says one thing she’ll miss about her friend is not being able to learn more from her.

“I knew the minute I met Hayley I wanted to live my life like she did,” said Mulvey. “Now it is only more meaningful that I go out in the world and follow her example.”

Beautiful tribute to a beautiful person. There are no words to express the anguish over the horrific things this family went through. Thank you Carolyn for sharing these stoies about your friend. I think this was a brave thing to do.

Philly, the problem with these monsters getting The Death Penalty is:

1) They are kept seperated from the general prison population and

2) they will die of old age while sitting on Death Row, using 1 appeal after the next.

Hardly justice. The Death Penalty needs to be changed so victims actually get justice. It's time to change the appeals process to a limit of 1, and only 1, appeal. It's still 1 more than the victim/s got.

Rest In Peace, Petit women.

Great sympathy for Dr Petit. No one deserves what happened to him and his family
