January 28, 2010 The Summer of MercyPosted: 03:28 PM ET
August 1991. In Wichita, Kansas, thousands of anti-abortion activists swamped the city – a period known as The Summer of Mercy. The protesters gathered to prevent people from entering Dr. George Tiller’s women’s clinic. Scott Roeder, the man on trial for the murder of Dr. Tiller, brought up the Summer of Mercy during his testimony, saying that although he didn’t participate in the protests, they certainly made him more aware of who Tiller was. In Session looks back at the weeks that cemented Wichita as ground zero of the abortion debate.
