Absolutely wonderful job by the State...Great job jury members. Maybe now the family can get on with their grief. See ya Juan! Down the river that is...

Linus   November 24th, 2009 4:53 pm ET

I am very suprised by the verdict. Especially at how fast the verdict came. I don't know about all the evidence adding up to him being guilty of the murders.

Dave   November 24th, 2009 4:59 pm ET

YESSSSSS Excellent decision.I hope this will help the family move forward

Rick   November 24th, 2009 5:00 pm ET

Justice was finally served and the victims and their family members can now move on with their lives.I would have been appalled if the verdict was anything less than GUILTY. However i do feel for the 2 year old Jevon,he is going to have a long life ahead. His mother and grandmother is dead and his father was the KILLER-there is no doubt in my mind.Thank god justice was served because this animal would have the oppurtunity to continue to be the criminal that he truly is.In the end he did not get what he was KILLING for and that was Jevon.

brandy   November 24th, 2009 5:01 pm ET

i did not agree with the proceedings of this case. the defense was very strong, and the state did a horrible job. i believe they did not have any solid evidence against juan except for motive. hello people theres still a fingerprint on the knife, the murder weapon, that did not match juan's. and the so called "phone call", yes he was mad he had all reason to be, they were trying to prevent him from seeing his son. i believe he is a innocent man

Ali   November 24th, 2009 5:03 pm ET

About time that an intelligent jury sees through the defense tactics. no one else with motive, of course there would be no dna evidence on the defendant 3 days after the offense when the bodies were found. Great job jury! Great job prosecution team!!!

Ray   November 24th, 2009 5:04 pm ET

Good work by The State and witnesses. A murderer is off the streets and can't huet any more innocent people ever.

LinB   November 24th, 2009 5:05 pm ET

The jury convicted him because of his abusetowards the victims (they did not like the person) not because of any surmountable evidence.

Ray   November 24th, 2009 5:05 pm ET

Good work by The State and witnesses. A murderer is off the streets and can't hurt any more innocent people ever.

john   November 24th, 2009 5:12 pm ET

This was a quick verdict with all this evidence of doubt . Did
they even look at the evidence or talk about the evidence .

kathleen   November 24th, 2009 5:15 pm ET

I am very surprised by this verdict. I do not believe they found him gulity. I thought the State and the police did a lousy job and there is no way there should be a gulity verdict in this case.

Mandy   November 24th, 2009 5:20 pm ET

I absolutely think the jury did the right thing. The state did the best they could without a lot of evidence and I am so happy that there is justice for these two woman who did not deserve this.

Mary Treinen-Moslen   November 24th, 2009 5:23 pm ET

The lead prosecutor deserves enormous credit for her weaving together a rational scenario during her final presentation. I am puzzled by why the talented lead defense attorney allowed all his hard work of raising doubt to be jeaprodized by the petty, unprofessional comments and demeanor of the person whom his team selected to start the final presentation for the defense. One cannot help but wonder if this was his way to facilitate justice in this tragic case of domestic violence.

Brandy Hemminger   November 24th, 2009 5:30 pm ET

Thank you so much GOD!!! The system worked this time!! That man should have been indited on 1st degree murder a long time ago! It's such a shame that a mother, a sister, best friend, niece, and grandmother, mother, best friend, sister, cousin, just all of these things that these ladies could have been is now gone! The most important one in this case was that baby!! He now has to live without a mommy, daddy, and grandmother! How will his little life play out? What will his quality of life be now? His little life was already disabled by his disability. Who will he live with? Whitney's family or Juan's? This is just a sad event for everyone involved. The lead detective in this case should be FIRED!!! I have never seen anything like this case! I have set in many court rooms and been part of investigations and this one just takes the cake! I hope that he rots in jail and someone beats the hell out of Juan everyday he is in jail!
Outraged in Arkansas!
Brandy

Shaniqua   November 24th, 2009 5:34 pm ET

YESSSSSSS! Horrible job by investigators though! The state did an awesome job recovering. Knew he was guilty, and he sat there with no emotion what-so-ever. I saw it as quite smug on the defense's part not to call any witnesses and on the Mendez's part not to testify. The poor child in this case just breaks my heart.

Dianne   November 24th, 2009 5:38 pm ET

Although there were many loopholes in this case, the jury did the right thing in finding this murderer guilty. His history of violence against his wife is unforgiving and it is time for him to pay for his actions.

ohio   November 24th, 2009 5:39 pm ET

unbelievable.....

Trevor Beckford   November 24th, 2009 5:39 pm ET

The jury did an excellent job on this case, finding the defendant guilty of double murder. The prosecution although they won this case need to brush up on there trial skills. They made several mistakes in this case and got really lucky.

john   November 24th, 2009 5:54 pm ET

There was too much doubt in this case to find this person
guitliy .And this was a quick verdict too did the jury look at
all evidence .

Pat   November 24th, 2009 5:54 pm ET

Wonderful job by the state. I love Tru TV. Wish you would stay on the air longer...

JJ9DAVIS   November 24th, 2009 5:57 pm ET

Wow. He was guilty but it was not proven. The first defense lawer who closed was the worst. I hated her. The jury probably did too.

Rhonda   November 24th, 2009 6:02 pm ET

I am with you Linus. I really dont think he did any of it. How did they come up without a doubt. Something tells me andhas been telling me did not do it!! There is a murderer running around still. How can tey sleep at night. just my opinion.

So Sad...   November 24th, 2009 6:06 pm ET

The jury had made up there minds in the begining thats why they jury never took any notes. I bet if you do a lie detector test all of the jurors they watched the trail over the weekend, or every night when they left the court... so what your saying is that none of the defense evidence matter, and watch when the jury do speak thier going to say Juan never got on the stand to testify if he was not guilty that's why, knowone followed the judges rules... you better hope one day you never get caught up in anything and have a bunch of senior citizens on your case cause your going to jail innocent or not, As far as I'm concern this man is still not guility & I know they will file an appeal, it might take some time but true justice will happen and FYI pick a younger jury not people in their 50 and 60's.

Beth   November 24th, 2009 6:06 pm ET

This is so wrong. If I were a Juror, there is no way I could find this guy
guilty. Do I think he did it, yes but I do not beleive the prosection proved it.

rhonda   November 24th, 2009 6:07 pm ET

Wonderful job by the STATE!! they couldnt prove without a doubt. The jury ws influenced by the prosecutors and the witnesses. A year ....COME ON!!! They should have went with the miss trial.

Gary   November 24th, 2009 6:07 pm ET

WOW! I'm not surprised. Chalk up another Black and White verdict in our superb justice system. Here is an idea... instead of wasting tax dollars on proving one's innocence, let's spend that money on saving whales or something of importance. JUSTICE FOR ALL, WHAT A JOKE!

Elizabeth   November 24th, 2009 6:15 pm ET

Justice was served. Many Blessings to the family of the two victims in this sad tragedy.

Tammy S.   November 24th, 2009 6:17 pm ET

I' m sorry, I don't believe there was justice here today. The evidence just did not add up. Yes he had motive but the case was bad. I think the jury was swayed by their emotions.

Jayna   November 24th, 2009 6:19 pm ET

I am so impressed with this jury! They were able to look beyond the botched investigation, realized that real life forensics is not as simple as the fictional CSI shows would have you believe and the smoke and mirrors act from the defense. They(defense) should have put on a defense for Juan, like an alibi? Also they should have had expert witnesses to dispute what the prosecution evidence and expert witness provided.
Throughout this trial I worried they would have reasonable doubts but I think the prosecutions closing arguments saved the case and eliminated that doubt! Justice has been served!

Rhonda   November 24th, 2009 6:20 pm ET

Justice is served up on a silver pladder. Congrats to the Jurors' they seen the truth of this awful Double- murderer. May the victims rest in peace and the family find some solace in the Justice that was rendered.

David in Cincinnati   November 24th, 2009 6:21 pm ET

Cynthia Ross delivered the most beautiful closing argument I've heard.

venessa tony thomas   November 24th, 2009 6:22 pm ET

I don't think that he gotten a fair trail.

Tracey   November 24th, 2009 6:36 pm ET

So glad he did not get off!!! Hope the family can move on and have a good holiday as much as they can!! Finally... justice for someone at the hands of an abuser!!! Too bad this young lady and her mom had to die though before something could be done to help her! We need to do something so we don't keep having this happen.... a restraining order is just a piece of paper and does no good!!

Stephen Thompson   November 24th, 2009 6:37 pm ET

Though there was no "smoking gun", or any eye-witness, I believe the jury got it right. Just think about it.......who else would, could, or even want to murder these two people? Of course he was cooperative with and during the investigation. He had nothing to lose. He may have learned this ploy during his previous "crimes". This time, however, the picture was too transparent.

Nancy   November 24th, 2009 6:38 pm ET

OMG, I am so proud of this jury. There was no other verdict they could have come back with. I was so sure he would be found not guilty. Now his son can be raised with loving family and I pray it is with his mommy's family. This man should NEVER be allowed to see this child again.

kiara   November 24th, 2009 6:38 pm ET

i watch these cases everyday and just about put myself in the defense attorney's shoes...i do not think juan mendez committed these murders!!!! no DNA was linked to him, he should be a free man. Juan Mendez may be a woman beater, but that does not make him a killer. Prosecution in this case SUCKS.......................

Floradine   November 24th, 2009 6:40 pm ET

This was a personal act. No strangers would have ever put the child out side, they would have left him inside the home. To have found this man not guilty and to have given him his son back would have sent the wrong message to the world. No more O.J .Simspons

Rick   November 24th, 2009 6:40 pm ET

The truth is that the prosecution had their hands full with the evidence in this case . However, the fact is that 2 wrongs does not make a right.Jaun was so irrate about the fact that he was not allowed to see his child he decided to take matters in his own hands although he had a restraining order against him.He was determined to punish Whitney for the pain he was suffering, which led to his decision to go over and take his child.Unfortunately,it led to this BRUTAL murders of his wife and mother-in-law.He truly thought he would get away with his crime.Despite the fact the investigators in the case were not thorough in this case the prosecutors did a great job in getting a conviction.Besides, who else had motivation to kill these 2 innocent people? The prosecution had a wonderful and convincing closing argument in which I think was the ultimate decision for the JURORS to find Juan GUILTY.

Beau   November 24th, 2009 6:40 pm ET

I cant believe the guilty verdict. The d.n.a. didnt match. Are all of you so blind? I cant believe how many people jump to the conclusion that Juan was guilty before you even heard the evidence. Its all the people like you that lock up innocent people. You assume that when the arrest is made, the person is guilty. I am angry with the way most of you side with the state. Maybe one day you will wake up and stop destroying our justice system!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Branden   November 24th, 2009 6:44 pm ET

Wow. A bunch of circumstantial evidence. I guess just being on trial is enough to get you convicted in this country. Darlie Routier is a great example. Texas convicted her for killing her kids even though she was attacked as well. Crazy days. What happened to real evidence and PROVING a case. I watched In Session from 8 – 2 all last week and was convinced he may have known who did it but no way he would be convicted. No wonder I've never been called for jury duty. :-)

Don   November 24th, 2009 6:46 pm ET

He will have a hard time in prison with no women to smack around, tortujre, and murder.

Lotus   November 24th, 2009 6:58 pm ET

Very good! Not all evidence can be DNA. He did it, no one else had interest on killing these two unfortunate women. He took the baby, then he brought him back to be discovered and also the bodies.'
He thinks he is so slick, huh? Guilty, guilty, and hope he gets life without parole, he doesn't deserve to spread his violence around this world anymore. Thank you, jury!

Robert   November 24th, 2009 7:07 pm ET

Let me know if you need someone to flip the switch....

Patricia   November 24th, 2009 7:09 pm ET

Domestic Violence is unfortunately part of our society, but also spread across all cultures...thankfully in the USA, we have a trial, judge, and jury that puts these abusers and murderers away. God bless the families and justice has been served!!! Juan will rot in prison for life (hopefully) thinking about the fact every single day that he took his son's mom and grandmother away.

Simone   November 24th, 2009 7:10 pm ET

I do not think the state proved the case, but it was him who did it. Is this Justice? I think he is guilty as sin but I hate so see this verdict only because I feel the jury based it's decision on weather they "liked" Juan" instead of the case itself and the lack of evidence and the reasonable doubt was so great in this case I am shocked.

BSL   November 24th, 2009 7:12 pm ET

It is good to see that justice was done in this case, convicting this flat emotionless man wonderful....wife beaters are cowards...

Laura   November 24th, 2009 7:16 pm ET

I really think that this Jury got it right. It all comes down to COMMON SCENTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

VONDA   November 24th, 2009 7:17 pm ET

well he wont get to hit another woman! i feel for the child. now he had not mother or father because of stupidity..hope it is a wake up call for all people that believe that violence is the answer..its not..you cant get along move around...atleast you still have your life and your freedom.

Pam   November 24th, 2009 7:21 pm ET

Thank God Florida has the death penalty!

Sigrid   November 24th, 2009 7:24 pm ET

Sorry Juan, but wives, girlfriends and children are not something you accumulate like trophies and deal with as you wish. Have a nice time wherever it is you're going.

Debbie   November 24th, 2009 7:27 pm ET

The jury got it right! Brandy was by far the best witness. She and Whitney didn't even like each other so she had no reason to lie. Good job jury! And may God bless little Javon.

Cat   November 24th, 2009 7:39 pm ET

The right decision!!! The prosecution had a very convincing closing argument which pulled all of the pieces together. Kudos to them!!! He is the only person who had a motive. I think the evidence was more against him than for him. May they both rest in peace and may that beautiful baby have a long and happy life with people who really love him.

Danny   November 24th, 2009 7:41 pm ET

Good job! Have a nice life...sentence that is.

Kathie in Maryland   November 24th, 2009 7:44 pm ET

Of course he killed them and the jury saw through the drama of the defense. Crimes aren't perfect. Investigations aren't perfect. "WE" need to get over the CSI effect. Bye Bye Juan!

Georgia Materia   November 24th, 2009 7:51 pm ET

I am so glad that the jury found them guilty. I feel bad for the lead detective that made so many errors Hopefully this gets him back on his game. I was afraid they would acquit this guy based on errors. The only thing lacking is that they cannot use the death penalty.

April   November 24th, 2009 8:04 pm ET

I am shocked I thought the defense proved reasonable doubt. The police did a lousy job with collecting evidence against him. The verdict did come in kinda fast, can we say I want to be home for Thanksgiving! WOW is all I can say. I also thought the prosecutors did a lousy job.

mary spangenberg   November 24th, 2009 8:09 pm ET

The defence underestimated the common sense of the jury. The regular folk are harder to fool than the well educated counsel might have thought.

mary spangenberg   November 24th, 2009 8:16 pm ET

The American justice system is the best!Common sense defence councel, good ole common sence, maybe a synonym for the truth?

lasvegasrose   November 24th, 2009 8:17 pm ET

Thank you God!!! I was worried because of the lousy police work and M.E. work. Fire that medical examiner and shake up the police department; demote the sgt. detective. I feel that the victims' friends and coworkers won the case for her and her mother. The defense made a critical mistake when they decided not to ask for the mistrial. The defense lawyers were smug, condescending and without compassion.
There is a God.

Shirley   November 24th, 2009 8:26 pm ET

I'm happy about the guilty verdict. I think our justice system is 'sick' when they try to play their little games and get people like Juan released on some technicality. He has guilt written all over him, but I do think his attorneys did a good job coaching him to stay cool during the trial. There was no doubt in my mind that he was guilty, all the way! Good job Jury!

edward   November 24th, 2009 8:28 pm ET

great verdict...veteran defense attorneys know if someone is guilty or not, but they are in it for the money...we don't need this animal in our midst...

Denise   November 24th, 2009 8:30 pm ET

He could of easily been found not guilty due to the lack of evidence but I'm pretty sure he did it!

poolchick   November 24th, 2009 8:32 pm ET

Good news but I hope we don't hear in 8 -10 yrs that he is getting out on parole. I vote for the death penalty.

diana harman   November 24th, 2009 8:34 pm ET

Now let him see what his rage and a sense of entitlement gets him in prison!

nan   November 24th, 2009 8:46 pm ET

told ya. this case was a no-brainer, regardless of how the talking heads tried to make it sound.

larry   November 24th, 2009 8:50 pm ET

i am delighted that the jury saw thru the smoke screen that the defense-liar put out. the dectives that botched the investigation should be reprimanded and a suspension without pay should be considered.

jrw   November 24th, 2009 9:15 pm ET

I am shocked, very shocked

PamsaRN   November 24th, 2009 9:19 pm ET

Wow! I'm so glad the jury came to this decision. The state did a great job on closing arugments connecting the defendent to the crime. I thought the woman lawyer was petty and juvenile in her closing statement.

Bill   November 24th, 2009 9:24 pm ET

I have never seen such a sham in all of my life, I guess you don't need any evidence anymore, just have some girl get upon the stand and remember something that she never said before and shed a few tears. This is Bull S&$%

Lynn   November 24th, 2009 9:25 pm ET

He was guilty as sin and it's time for him to pay up. Now he gets three hots and a free flop for more years than he's been alive. And he thought an image change would fool the jury!

NOLA   November 24th, 2009 9:26 pm ET

When they made the announcement that it was an all White young jury, I knew they would have found him guilty! He did not have a chance in hell.

Linnea   November 24th, 2009 9:26 pm ET

Yep, the cops made mistakes, regrettably. However, that doesn't mean that a killer gets to go free. I thought it was clear from the beginning that this man was guilty. For a while it looked like he might walk. The jury delivered the right verdict, thankfully. I hope the judge gives him life.

sdurham   November 24th, 2009 9:40 pm ET

He's just another low life creep who belongs in prison for the rest of his life. The District Attorney should've gone for 1st degree murder and sought the death penalty.

There is no doubt in my mind, after watching the trial, that he did it. Justice has been served. Yippie!

Audrey   November 24th, 2009 9:40 pm ET

This is a wonderful verdict for stopping violence against women.

Jackie   November 24th, 2009 9:50 pm ET

I am very pleased with this verdict! the police dropped the ball so many times in this case that i was afraid that this man was going to get away with these murders. I'm glad the jury was able to see and decide what the truth really was.

davew   November 24th, 2009 10:00 pm ET

All last week the anchors just fawned all over the defense, but I always thought there was plenty for conviction. So did the Jury!!

Barb in Strongsville   November 24th, 2009 10:23 pm ET

Surprisingly quick verdict! I figured the jury would convict him tomorrow. Fort Meyers must be breathing a sigh of relief...

R. Yates   November 24th, 2009 11:36 pm ET

Thank God this man will not get away with this grievous evil!!!

linda   November 25th, 2009 1:47 am ET

Shocked that a jury could go through all that evidence and decide in 90 mins, Im still not convinced of his guilt. One of the previous posts made an interesting point two woman stabbed multiple times he could not have stabbed them at the same time. maybe more than one intruder. Lots of different men lived there with the two woman gone
who knows who they all were.

Ursula   November 25th, 2009 2:02 am ET

I am very surprised by the verdict! I thought that if there was "reasonable doubt" in a case that there was grounds for mistrial. I thought in our court system that you had to be "proven guilty." Mendez was not proven guilty in this trial. No blood found anywhere, no proof that those were his sneakers! Nothing, to direct him to the murders of this case. I know that he and the victim had domestic problems, but there was no proof. They said, that Mendez didn't show any signs of grief when the police said they were murdered, was he suppose to, he did not like them already, so why would he show that he cared. He corporated with the police. He had no bruises on him. The State let the witness testify about Mendez probation ,regardless if they excluded it on record, it was still in the jurors minds. The State did a poor good job with handling the case and they did a poor with preventing evidence. "Reasonable Doubt," that went out the window in this case!!!

Bernard   November 25th, 2009 8:31 am ET

Justice has been served for this terrible crime. Aaaamen!!

Kathie in Maryland   November 25th, 2009 10:11 am ET

Where were the people who are questioning the Juan Mendez jury when the OJ verdict was read???? Hmmmmm, what sad story does this tell us about our society????

Awilda   November 25th, 2009 11:48 am ET

The prosecution did a wonderful closing remarks. I was not sure if he was guilty until those closing arguments.

kos   November 25th, 2009 12:32 pm ET

Why didn't the defense bring up the fact...Mendez was
so concerned for the baby... why would he leave the child outside unattended for hours? why didn't defense simply bring testimony where Mendez was during the murders? My guess is it was a thrill killing done by some unknown white maniacs who slaughtered the two women, left the baby outside while leaving no trace evidence. I did not like the mother nor the mother in law and I am white.

SB   November 25th, 2009 1:37 pm ET

The DNA that was on the knife was his hands down! Although the investigation should have been much more thorough. The baby didn't do it and no none else hated them, like him. All of them could have been living better lifestyles and maybe this wouldn't have happened. He is the only one who displayed hatred & threats anytime he wasn't getting his way. Thank God they got the evidence tested that they did. I hate the way defense attorneys dress their client up in suits and make them be quiet, like the jury is too dumb to figure out it's all an act. They could see his real personality through the phone call testimony, etc....I am so glad the jury saw through his little innocent act and cannot believe his family was there in force supporting him. I hope that precious child gets placed with a family that will put him in an environment that he deserves and that he gets the care he needs. I don't think he was in a good environment where he was, period. Glad the family got justice, in this obvious case of violence and lack of concern for human life!!

dcrc   November 25th, 2009 1:48 pm ET

There was no doubt that this man killed his wife and her mother and now he will spend most of his life in prison. Whitney and her mother can never get their lives back. But thank God this monster will be behind bars so he can never harm others. Rest in Peace to Whitney and her mother.

Debbie   November 25th, 2009 4:10 pm ET

Looks like his days of beating up women are over. What a creep!

V.C.   November 25th, 2009 6:46 pm ET

Mr. Mendez was supposedly abusive with a strong hatred towards his wife. From her reactions the feeling seemed to be mutual. So his demeanor towards the victim was not odd or suspicious. When you are angry with a loved one, friend, your child, it's not unnatural to verbally attack & even want to strike out of anger. But to brutally murder a person is a different kind of mentality. There are times I could just strangle my rebellious teenage son & I've mentioned it to several people in conversation, but if he ever came up strangled to death, I don't care how much evidence you think you have...I DIDN'T & WOULDN'T DO IT,no matter how angry I am! I'm sure his lawyers schooled him on his demeanor so that the public wouldn't scrutinize his every move & expression.

Jump_Off_2009   November 26th, 2009 5:52 pm ET

Who hated Whitney Juan? Who had more motive to murder
Whitney and her mother Juan? Juan Mendez's family appears not
wrap to tight in the head. After hearing his mother speak, and
playing the race card, you can't help but wonder why his mother did not seek some serious help for her son, and his violent episodes on women. Mrs. Mendez how can you say your boy Juan is a good boy when he has beat-up the mother’s of his four children. He now is a convicted felon for the murder of his wife and mother-n-law. I think it's a little to late to say your son is a good boy. Yea, maybe when Juan was 5yrs old. One thing for sure jail and time, and truly has aged Juan Mendez, Jr. I doubt for one second that Juan will think about his actions the whole time he sits in prison. He will only sit in prison, and find a way to get out.

SB   November 30th, 2009 7:06 pm ET

Yeah, his mom is a trip, along with all the others that were defending him. Probably why he turned out like he did. She'd probably say he didn't do it, even if she saw him do it. He'll finally get his in prison, I'm pretty sure.

teri   December 1st, 2009 2:27 pm ET

surprised they found him guilty. I dont think they had enough evidence other than past abuse. I mean he could have done it, but I am not convinced with the evidence they provided. The defense did nothing, they just rode on what the state had. Well you can never be too sure!

James   December 2nd, 2009 1:46 pm ET

Done and Done! For those of you who were surprised at the Verdict. Stop and think, 23 witnesses for the prosecution, no witnesses or testimony from the defendant. You honestly think he is surprised. Dah!

Dave   December 3rd, 2009 5:18 pm ET

I want jamie and the rest of the crew back she was great..

Laughing   December 4th, 2009 9:52 am ET

Reasonable doubt does not mean no doubt. I can doubt that the sun will rise in the morning or that the moon is not made of green cheese (and even present argument and "evidence" to support my claims) but that doesn't mean those doubts are reasonable. There was an obvious string of escalating violence towards his wife leading to the brutal murder of his wife and mother-in-law, how much physical evidence do you need? Motive, means and opportunity (with a long history of violence to suggest this outcome) what did all of you soft in the head wannabe defense/prison attorneys really expect?? Bwhaha
