Sex offenders questioned as search for killer continues

Posted: 11:53 AM ET

NEW YORK – Crime scene investigations are continuing today in two states as law enforcement pursue whoever killed little 7-year-old North Florida resident Somer Thompson.

Somer Thompson

At a mid-morning press conference, a spokesperson for law enforcement announced that all 90 registered sex offenders in the 5-mile radius of Thompson’s home have been spoken to, and at this point it is believed they have no involvement. Reporters were told the convicted offender’s homes and properties have been searched and families have been contacted in an attempt to eliminate them as suspects.

The second grader, in Orange Park, Florida, was last seen on Monday as she walked home from school with her twin brother and sister. This murder investigation has revealed that detectives are very interested in an abandoned house along the route that Thompson walked home. The home has become an active crime scene as law enforcement combs the structure for what they hope may be probative evidence. A local park, across the street, has also been of interest to these crime scene investigators.

And while law enforcement tries to find the killer of Somer Thompson, the little girl’s body that was found in a Georgia landfill on Wednesday, is still in Savannah Georgia, after an autopsy was performed on Thursday.

Investigators are asking for any information from the public on who murdered Somer, but they are also focusing on any and all forensic evidence that can be collected from locations in Florida and also from the little girl’s body.

A sexual assault or “rape kit” testing undoubtedly was performed at autopsy as well as a collection of any material under Thompson’s nails, and a collection of her clothes for sophisticated DNA testing.
A relatively new DNA technique labeled “touch DNA” allows forensic scientists to isolate foreign DNA on a person mainly from their clothes that comes from merely a touch of an assailant. That touch can leave behind skin cells. These skin cells then are analyzed to find the DNA of a possible assailant.

In 2008, touch DNA found from the clothing JonBenet Ramsey was wearing at her death in 1996, not only led to prosecutors officially clearing members of the little girl’s family, but led law enforcement one step closer to solving the murder of this 6 year old Boulder Colorado girl.
Florida authorities say they are hard at work to find the perpetrator of the horrific murder this week of Somer Thomson, not only to find justice for the elementary school student, but to also protect others in this North Florida community.

As reporters were told this morning the goal is to find that “one piece of crucial evidence” to solve the murder of Somer Thompson.

My prayers go out to this family for their grief. What a sad time for them.

Joy   October 23rd, 2009 1:18 pm ET

My condolences go out to the entire Thompson family. I hope that they catch this sick individual(s.). These kind of crimes are not going to stop until there are stiffer law penalties.

These predators are preying on our young and innocent children. They get arrested and come out months later, with no parole supervision, and within miles of schools, children etc., and commit the same crimes over and over. Our community is not safe until there is something done to stop these type of crimes. People like this do not change. They belong in a place far away from society and our children.

I pray for this family at such a devasting time in there life. Somer is still here in spirit, and heart. Keep faith in the lord, they will find these individual(s).

Trevi   October 23rd, 2009 1:21 pm ET

Let us pray that God gives the authorites the guiding power to find this animal. Amen

krd   October 23rd, 2009 1:23 pm ET

The mother is right – this is not okay. I'd rather lock up every sex offender forever than let this EVER happen again.

Jennifer   October 23rd, 2009 1:26 pm ET

I am sorry that this sweet little girl died. I hope this opens the eyes of parents to watch their children more closely....due to the fact there are such sick and evil people out there.

Teremist   October 23rd, 2009 1:27 pm ET

It is always a horrendous tragedy, when a child is lost, whatever the circumstances. It is absolutely horrifying when it is the result of a brutal murder. This case is made the more heinous, by the way the body was dumped in the garbage. It is incomprehensible that anyone could be so depraved and callous, and lacking in humanity. This case is SCREAMING for justice, (as are hundreds of others.) So far law enforcement has been diligent and comprehensive in their work, and deserve great praise. Perhaps THIS WILL BE THE CASE, that SHAMES our legislators into finally taking action to protect women and children.
Sexual Offenders are a continuous threat to society, as long as they are free. No BAIL, No Probation, No Parole, no Sentencing options, except; NATURAL LIFE, OR THE DEATH PENALTY. ENOUGH IS ENOUGH!

tom clarke   October 23rd, 2009 1:41 pm ET

"90" sex offenders in a 5 square mile area? This seems absolutely a typo...tell us it is just that.

stephanie   October 23rd, 2009 1:42 pm ET

When in the world are we going to do something about these predators, these sub-humans, these ... there isn't a vile enough word to describe people who prey on children.

Char   October 23rd, 2009 1:45 pm ET

My heart goes out to the family. I hope they catch the dirty pigs that did this. Anyone that could hurt a child needs to be locked up.

c   October 23rd, 2009 1:57 pm ET

this is horrid... my condolances to somers family, my heart breaks for her mom, after hearing her words...

Kat   October 23rd, 2009 1:58 pm ET

Poor little girl. My heart goes out to the family. I hope they find the animals who did this and they never see the light of another day.

anne   October 23rd, 2009 2:02 pm ET

this is so pathetic. only in america does this continue on and on and 9 of 10 times by a repeat offender. but we are too concerned about how inhumane it is to execute a another ('human being') killer and not how inhumane it is was to kill a (person) child. what will it take to end the nighmares of all children and those of pretty jaycee, elizabeth, shasta, etc., etc., etc.,?

horrified   October 23rd, 2009 2:11 pm ET

Anyone who rapes and murders a child 12 or under should be made to face a death sentence. These people are the sickest of the sick...now that they have the internet they can congregate and pat each other on the back and tell each other that they are ok and then they go out and viciously attack our babies.

These sick people are animals...they can't be helped...like a dog with rabies they should be shot.

Debbie Roberson   October 23rd, 2009 2:20 pm ET

My prayers are with this famiy.

I heard on the news this am, about Somers mom had lunch with a guy and he was going to stay and make sure the children came home from school. Have they talked with him.

Stan Steel   October 23rd, 2009 2:22 pm ET

Prayers to the family. The degenerate to society will be found and brought to justice.

kelly   October 23rd, 2009 2:22 pm ET

We should ship all convicted child sex offenders to Guantanamo Bay or some alcatraz type island to be held indefinately.

pmb   October 23rd, 2009 2:24 pm ET

Amen Teremist. Our legislators need to take action NOW. This is happening way too frequently and these animals do not have the right to remain in the mainstream of our society where they can act out these heinous crimes to our innocent children. We can't let our children walk to school or go down the block to see a friend. What is going on? They can't even play in their own backyards! So, we let the sick deranged people in this world dictate how we need to operate? In fear!

Nyurka   October 23rd, 2009 2:31 pm ET

Yes, find him and do not even take him to trial, just take him straight to an electric chair.
And also do not put high voltage right away, just go a little a little to torture him the same way probably he did it to this little angel.

Murphy   October 23rd, 2009 2:33 pm ET

DEATH PENALTY for child molesters, whether they kill or not. Period.
Nothing else will stop them.

sharlot   October 23rd, 2009 2:41 pm ET

I pray to God, that they authorities find the person or person(s) that did this. My heart goes out to the family, whoever did this, you will pay. God will punish those that hurt little children. Shame on you who did this! GOD BLESS, the little children.......

Cindy   October 23rd, 2009 2:55 pm ET

We do our best and put thousands of police out into the streets paroling for DWI Offences when they could be better utilized by paroling our streets looking for the child molesters. What a waste of time and money.

Vickie   October 23rd, 2009 3:00 pm ET

Jennifer – Your statement "parents to watch their children more closely" is an outrage. It sounds like you are blaming the parents for the murder of their child. Our society is not one where parents can keep an eye on their children every minute of every day. It is very common for children to walk home from school. It is not the fault of the parents that there is sickness and evil in our midst and that they lost their dear child as a result of the actions of others. Let's hope the authorities find the person(s) responsible and bring them to swift justice.

I pray that this family finds peace and that their broken hearts mend quickly.

Ivy's Grama   October 23rd, 2009 3:03 pm ET

I agree with Teremist, it is time to take child predators out of the equation. I think we have tried everything available to get these people straightened around, nothing works, they just keep on. Maybe if the death penalty were the 'common' punishment, it would stop some of them. What a pity it is that we have to jail up our kids, so they don't get hurt or killed.
And to Somers Mom, my heart felt yours and I am so sorry you and your family have to go through this. May God Bless you and help you.

Denise   October 23rd, 2009 3:03 pm ET

I don't if i just feels like this is happening more frequently or there is just more media attention on these kinds of cases, but this is awful. I hate watching the news only to hear about another child who's gone missing. These poor children and their families!!! My heart goes out to her family and to the families of all the other missing children out there.

Heidi   October 23rd, 2009 3:07 pm ET

Prayers don't work .
We need a justice system with some teeth in it.
Let's get rid of these monsters.

Doll   October 23rd, 2009 3:17 pm ET

I would like to send my prayers out to this entire family and community. I do not understand people that hurt innocent children. Parents – please protect your babies -do not allow children to walk home alone!!!

I am praying that the authories will find this person and take action soon. There are too many children are losing their precious lives.

Leisa   October 23rd, 2009 3:19 pm ET

I know we live in a free society where people make choices. Because I seen the news so often and is aware of these predators I live in fear no child of mine will be walking or going anywhere unsupervised when these predators are at large. When they are shipped off to an isolated island then I will be able to breathe release. Until then all parents and loved ones should hold their most valuable possessions close–which undoubtedly are our children. Again I hope this evil monster is located quickly!!

Leisa

Tori   October 23rd, 2009 3:19 pm ET

Just a note to all human rights crazies who make it so difficult to get proper punishment for these animlas: when you hurt and kill a child, you stop being a human and you give up all your human rights. So child molesters and killers should get the death penalty if convicted and get executed quickly, not 10-15 years later. There is no use for these POSs in society and they can not be rehabilitated.

Jennifer   October 23rd, 2009 3:21 pm ET

vickie, i did not say you have to watch your kids every minute. I am not blaming the parents. Yes there are alot of children that walk home from school...that is what is a shame. We know that these people are out there. There should be precautions taken...that is all I was saying. I am a mom of 7 and I do not let my kids outside unsupervised. I what I said outrages you..that is a shame. I rather not take the chance..if you read all of what I said, I also said you should be able to let your kids outside unsupervised..but the thing is you cant..there are sick people out there. Are you willing to take the chance with your children? I'm not. I do feel really bad for the family especially Somer...that is who i feel sorry for

Mike   October 23rd, 2009 3:27 pm ET

Let us all prey for this little girl, the animal(s) need to be brought to justice and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law..The laws need to be changed and law makers need to do a better job with our current laws and protect societies most precious gifts..Just because the have to register as sex offenders dont mean they wont offend again..but yet we let these sick people go out in society and rape, molest, and kill once again..Shame on you lawmakers who make it easy for these sick people to re-offend..get off your butts and make stiffer penalties for these sick monsters and lets protect our children once and for all

Chele   October 23rd, 2009 3:29 pm ET

WILL LAW ENFORCEMENT EVER DO SOMETHING ABOUT these sick, perverted, evil, low life scumbags of this world, the lowest form of life there will ever be. The comment earlier is totally correct. They can NEVER be reformed, and they do need to be locked away from society FOREVER. They need to make a NEW ALCATRAZ designed for sex offenders but in a place that is COMPLETELY surrounded by ALLIGATORS. These sick individuals DO NOT belong in society to have the freedom and opportunity to abduct and harm our children any longer. I truly think that our GOVERMENT needs to use these sick animals that are so called human beings, as LIVE LABORATORY TEST SPECIMENS instead of rats..since when can we get true results from rats? The offenders NEED to be used as the rats are used. In these cases, no one should be able to use the word INHUMANE. Look what they have done. Maybe scientists could actually come up with a cure for cancer. Maybe if the law was for ALL sex offenders to become Human Lab Rats , in a for the rest of their life, in prison, then maybe there wouldnt be these horrendous crimes. CHANGE THE LAWS AND MAKE IT MANDATORY FOR LIFE TO BE INCARCERATED AS LAB RATS, and also to be CASTRATED. Death penalty is too good for them. One day we ALL will stand before The LORD JESUS CHRIST and be judged for everything we have done in our lives, good or bad. They will deal with The LIVING LORD GOD ALMIGHTY!!!

corri   October 23rd, 2009 3:34 pm ET

90 sex offenders in a 5-mile radius! Why was this girl walking anywhere without an adult with her? Wow.

Maleus Dei   October 23rd, 2009 3:35 pm ET

It's time the laws changed, no more multiple trials, no more letting these people get 2nd chances to live "normal" lives among us, no more life sentences wasting our tax dollars, no more of this! I can't understand a world that turns a blind eye to a victim but prefers the excuses and ultimately enables these people to continue! I love Hammurabi's code... an eye for an eye a tooth for a tooth... the righteous destroy the wicked so that the STRONG DO NOT RULE THE WEAK... that means these PREDATORS don't get to touch these children, or elderly or involent! If we can't possibly fathom the pain they endured as victims of ANY crime, can we truly be so kind to those who do this to them? It's time to take back our country, our states, our cities, our neighborhoods and STOP these people who infest us with their disgusting ways. A country of freedom does NOT give them the right to violate the very freedom we have. I truly believe that if someone killed, raped or violated mine or my family's rights I SHOULD have the right to exact vengance in the SAME mannor they exacted their violations. -Maleus Dei

put death row to all sex offenders its time to stop the killing of little girls   October 23rd, 2009 3:35 pm ET

its the systems that let this keep happening to children for letting fucken sex offenders get out that pisses me off that they kno why there in ther and they still let them free they should give them life with out parole and death i hope they get her killer and sentence him to death for what he did to this little beautiful girl send my respects to her family thats with pain right know and will never heel because of what this sick bastered did

Mending Fences   October 23rd, 2009 3:40 pm ET

Heidi, prayers do work! My prayer is this:
Father in Heaven, please give Somer a hug for us and comfort her family, may they feel Your presence and know Somer is with you safe and full of love. Please be with the officers as they seek justice for this crime and this family, lay it on the preditor to turn himself in and to never harm another. In Jesus precious name, Amen.

JAS   October 23rd, 2009 3:42 pm ET

I could not stop crying after I heard all of this, then After watching her mother on TV, It was even worse.
Our Justice System is very broken, WE keep people locked up that don't need to be and we let the monsters out. We need to fix this big problem we have, People think because they are registered as sex offenders and they have GPS that they won't do anything, That is false security, We don't need these people out ESPECIALLY around schools. That is just INSANE!!
I Pray God give the Police insight and help find this person(s) responsible for such a sick crime. I bet these people thought they would get away with this.

Debbie   October 23rd, 2009 3:44 pm ET

IAfter viewing the video of the Mother's interview in front of neighbors, friends, etc, it makes me wonder if she knows something. I'm sure some doctor is givng her nerve pills but she ddn't seem as upset as most parents would be. She even said it could be my and didn't finish that statement. This reminds me so much of Susan Smith, the one who buckled her kids in the back seat and let the car roll in the lake in SC several years ago. Something just isn't jiving.

Kim   October 23rd, 2009 3:47 pm ET

When is Congress going to get off their bump and fund The Adam Walsh Child Safety and Protection Act of 2006. Signed into law by George Bush in 2006 on the 25th anniversary of Adam's Brutal death. This would help keep these child predators of the streets killing these innocent children. Rape a child life in prison. My family knows first hand on what it feels like to live with this whole in your heart for the rest of our lives. Not only have they not funded this law, they continue to ignore the tragic reality of International Child Abduction and will not help these American parents get their children back. American children the forgotten citizens of this country. Children are not even safe in their own home with the parents in the next room.. The Predator will come right into your home or online while your child
is playing a kids game on the internet. You always think it can not happen to you but these sick demented people find a way to keep destroying American families. ACTION NOT WORDS.

Michelle   October 23rd, 2009 3:53 pm ET

It is now time for us to take ACTION!!! This may sound a bit far out but.......they make GPS devices for cars etc.......can they not do something like that for our children???? Think of all the lives it would save!!! Having a device put into a child or even in their blood..then having the capability to remove it when they are of age. Something NEEDS to be done, this is a daily occurance throughout the world... we must stop these evil people!!!

lindsey   October 23rd, 2009 3:54 pm ET

May this little angel rest in peace, and the sick person who hurt her be prosecuted to the full extent of the law!! My thoughs and prayers go out to her family. She is in a beautiful place now.

cozzygrl   October 23rd, 2009 4:00 pm ET

My heart goes out to Somers parents, siblings, grandparents and her whole circle of ppl that knew her. I think we should take sex offenders and just cut there genitals off. I hate these type of ppl. They make me sick to my stomach. And like everyone else I agree this is happening way to much. What's it gonna take to change things? How many more kids? I think when they catch whoever did this....let Somer's people have him or her...that would be the best.

Pat Baugh   October 23rd, 2009 4:01 pm ET

There is nothing to stop these sick things we call people! I blame alot on the so called do gooders who don't want to have anyone be to harshly punished or hurt. It's as it the innocent children are dispensable. Im sick of these people trying to protect these these type of criminals from the death penalty. There should be no other choice but to destory these unfeeling murdering animals. Just like we would a mad dog or anyother depraved animal. There is proof there is no hope or help for this type of sickness. Locking them up is to good for them. They should first be casterated and then put to death.
And for you bleeding harts, get a life defending something that matters. How many of our babies are we going to let this type of preditor destroy before we put an end to it.?
I say men, rise up and start taking matters into your own hands if the law is not going to stop this. By the looks of it, they are not!
Pat

O   October 23rd, 2009 4:04 pm ET

Please stop calling people who kill "animals", they are not animals, they are pure evil. Animals only kill to survive. Let us hope they catch the person responsible for killing this child and every other child in this world.

Stacey   October 23rd, 2009 4:04 pm ET

I thought that I read somewhere that the police followed a tip which sent them to the landfill. If that is the case I am wondering if the investigating officers have contacted that person. Since this tip was the one that helped them recover this poor child. Maybe just maybe the tipster is the suspect.

John   October 23rd, 2009 4:20 pm ET

The person who did this will rot and suffer in hell for all of eternity. I wish nothing but the worst on this sick, disgusting excuse of a human being. Rest in peace, Somer.

Kristen   October 23rd, 2009 4:32 pm ET

I hate how much this is happening, I cannot imagine what this family is going thru. My prayers and thoughts are with you.

Penelope   October 23rd, 2009 4:40 pm ET

Hey Chele may have something there ....Lab Rats...!!
Anyone instilling fear & pain on a child should be stripped of everything, even their clothes, much less their "rights"....I know there are more children suffering at the hands of their so called "care givers" than these psycho predators can get their hands on...My guess is that these psychos are the end product of such an up-bringing.... If we cannot train would-be parents to love and care..(something that used to be instinctional) ....Then at least we should be able to contain their off-spring....

Coco   October 23rd, 2009 4:42 pm ET

I've noticed that quite a few of you have noticed how Somer's Mom was seen crying but no tears have been seen on her face. I must admit that her behavior did catch my attention but I cant understand how she would be involved? I dont even want to think about it.
I have a five year old daughter and both my husband and I work full time, we pay to have her stay after school at the care center located on campus until we can pick her up. I know that not everyone can afford this but we must all try to find ways to keep our kids off the streets because unfortunetly with these predators on the loose we cant let them out of our sight. I was shocked to read that there are 90 NINETY registered sex offenders within a 5 mile radius of where Somer was last seen alive. You cant blame the parents for the deaths of their children but you do have to admit that now a days our children need adult supervision 100% of the time. NO EXCUSES. You hear about cases such as these all the time, do NOT think it wont happen to you because it can!!

Lotus   October 23rd, 2009 4:44 pm ET

Horrendeous! I have grandaughters, two girls, 10 and 11, different moms, when something like this happens, those two beautiful little faces come to my mind right away. How can we fix the world from these atrocities to small children? Death penalty, without the usual 20 year appeal in deat row, living, eating, sleeping, while the families toss and turn in dispair for their tragedy. Not fair! Parents and grandparents, let us watch our children very close, even in the least innocent city or town, remember those two little friends found in a ditch shot so many times? In a rural road, they never caught the stupid idiot ignorant monster(s) that did that. God Help us all! My prayers to the family of Somer, God bless them all!

harperlee   October 23rd, 2009 4:47 pm ET

I'm with you Debbie. Something is not right about the response from the mom. too many words

JeffP   October 23rd, 2009 4:47 pm ET

I don't want to pay to house these criminals for life. Execute them all.

JESSICA   October 23rd, 2009 4:54 pm ET

My heart breaks to think of what happened to this little girl. i can't even imagine what her family is ging through. I have a 9 year old little girl and my boyfriend tells me i am overly protective of her and this proves to be why i am so protective. I will pray for the family and i hope they catch the person or persons who hurt and killed this little girl. They deserve to die and put put in garbage landfill cuz that is what this person or persons are THEY ARE GARBAGE A WASTE OF SPACE!!

Kay Lesher-White   October 23rd, 2009 5:01 pm ET

Our government is so wrapped up in terrorism but do not see that American families are being terrorized every day when they step out their door. We can't let our children play in their own yards without someone being with them to keep an eye on them. We need to get rid of all the child porn that is in demand on the internet and stop breeding these "new" monsters. There is something inheriently wrong in the hard wiring of some men and we need to find out why but as long as we dump our money into celebrity entertainment and professional athletes we will never be able to stop this. If a child of a high profile celebrity was dumped in a landfill perhaps something would be done. Concerned citizens need to come together and march on Capitol Hill and demand our government to stop these helacious crimes against women and children. But then again our government may be to busy planning our next war to be sincerely concerned. God help us all.

John   October 23rd, 2009 5:02 pm ET

I have a little girl of my own and I could not imagine this happening to her. This country is too soft on criminals, especially on those sick individuals that prey on children. Criminals argue about their rights when they are caught, but what about the rights of their victims? What about the victim's right to live and have a normal life? The justice system needs to be harder on criminals and quit giving them so much slack. My heart goes out to the family of little Somer.

emilylove   October 23rd, 2009 5:19 pm ET

Wha i think that they should do when they catch who ever kelled Somer is to give him the death penalty not only for him but for anybody that kills a child. Maybe that way theyll think twice before commitina a crime.

rk   October 23rd, 2009 5:46 pm ET

My prayers and support goes to Thomson family.
Sex-crimes are said to the type which is most reapeated by the same convict. Why should we let them live in a community? We should give them life in prison without parole or death. This the only solution to reduce these type of crimes.
It is read that there are 90 registered sex offenders in 5 mile radius of the Thomson 's residence!!!!!

Susan   October 23rd, 2009 5:50 pm ET

Death penalty for all of them!!

Laura   October 23rd, 2009 5:52 pm ET

My thoughts, for whatever they're worth, are these:

1) My dog has a locator chip in her. I would gladly have them put in my twin granddaughters who are 3 if it were allowed.
2) I check the sex offenders web site in my area often. At least once a week.
3) We just blasted the moon to see if there was water. If that's an option for inhabitants, I say send the POS's there to serve out their time.
4) I don't care how old the child is. Don't let them walk by themselves or walk away from a group. STAY together always.

JenJ   October 23rd, 2009 5:57 pm ET

My heart breaks for that Mom. I agree with capital punishment for child molesters and I also agree with Parent watch your children
more closly. WE have to....there is a dark scary world full of sick
depraved people....we have to watch our children every minute of
everyday...and no one should say it can't be done....at this point
what choice do we have.......

john mann   October 23rd, 2009 6:05 pm ET

When will we finally stop letting pedophile sexual offenders out of prison? They cannot be rehabilitated. They are wired wrong . They talk in chat rooms and support each other. They tell each other its "normal" and O.K. Well it is not! It is the most horrible thing ever! They should not get life in prison, they should be killed. I always hear about the rights of the pedophile. What about the rights of the poor innocent child? The child does not deserve this. Where is justice? These people are the most foul and depraved monsters on the planet. They prey on the weak and helpless. I think pedophiles should be hunted down and brutally blugeoned and mamed and tortured until death publically. This might help to serve as a deterent to others wanting to do the same thing to helpless children. Sexual predators should have no rights. Once they touch a child, rights are gone! Let the family of the child determine what to do to the predator. Anything the family wants, no restrictions! I would make him the star of his own Hostile movie! When will we do something to save the children? How many more little boys and girls will be raped and sodomized then thrown into the dump before we stop it? It's past time to stop the madness!

Pam   October 23rd, 2009 6:10 pm ET

Does any one else think that the mother seemed a little to calm during that interview. I can't explain it but I have children and I would be histerical. This mother just seemed to "matter of factly"

wnicole.   October 23rd, 2009 6:23 pm ET

my prayers are with the thompson family.

Emily Dieffenbach   October 23rd, 2009 6:46 pm ET

I heard on your shows and in the news that they were questioning over 100 sex predators. What are these people doing out where they can find them. Also Why not make MANAtory castration the punishment for touching kidsif they touch a child they shouldn!t be wandering around in 1 piece.I!m the great grandmother of 10 children.

jamileh hassan   October 23rd, 2009 6:47 pm ET

My heart goes to the family, i cant believe some one will do such thing to an innocent child, we need to stop these sick people,we need to change the law we can't slap them on the wrist and throw them in jail, and what do they do? they eat, drink, sleep, wach tv . They enjoy their life while children are dead and families suffer. They need to suffer and pay the price big time and to feel the pain they put these innocent children in. I know in some other countries if a person steals, they cut your hand off, and if you kill a child they put you to death slowly.
Lets take some action soon, enough killing innocent children who are the future of this country.

Lenora   October 23rd, 2009 6:49 pm ET

We've all read and cried over little children being hurt and killed but we've also been guilty of thinking it can't happen to us, we are wrong, it can and it does. I cried my heart out reading they found this precious child in a landfil, I couldn't help but cry for the parents as well as what the child must have thought the last minutes of her little life. I don't blame some of the parents but some I do blame. Parents have got to pay closer attention to where their children go, where they play, the surroundings, even in public places some parents let their children wander around the store unattended. It is true we have to believe Somer is in a wonderful place with God and He will love and protect her but being a parent and grandparent there are times even though our faith is strong it doesn't take the place of being able to hold our children in our arms, we're going to wish for just one more time to say I love you.

Linda   October 23rd, 2009 6:57 pm ET

When isit Enough for the families to keep having to deal with these constant Crimes against CHILDREN. Everytime you hear the news there is another child missing and then dead. The Laws needs to be changed for the punishment of these sick, sick so called human beings. I am a surviver of childhood molestation by a teacher when I was 10 years old. I am now 46 and it has FOREVER changed my Life. There needs to be a Law that not only a sex offender register but it needs to be added that when these sex offenders move into your community. That Law Enforcement has to notify each and every neighbor and neighborhood who and what house the reside at. why can't they been given salt pills like they did in military time on subs. Way I look at it. They have no rights.

concerned parent   October 23rd, 2009 6:58 pm ET

My prayers go out to the parents of this little girl. Sexual predators cannot be rehabilitated and need to be taken off our streets and be put away for life. 90 registered sex offenders within a 5 mile radius is absolutely obsurd. Our children's safety should be #1 and they have the right to be able to walk to and from school without the fear of being abducted and brutalized.. Enough is enough.

Margate27   October 23rd, 2009 7:01 pm ET

Americans are going to have to picket Washington or their local politicians to get stricter sentences for people who commit crimes against innocent children. Every single day it seems like more & more children are kidnapped, raped and/or killed. Just go online & try to find out how many sex offenders are located in your area. You will be shocked!!! There are 53,201 registered sex offenders in FL. That is not counting ones that did not register & many who have not ever been prosecuted for a crime. I feel horrible for the Thompson Family & especially for Somer. I doubt they even knew there were that many sex offenders living around them. Authorities don't tell you, you have to go look on your own. Something has got to change & now!!!!!

Voter   October 23rd, 2009 7:12 pm ET

Sex crimes whould have tougher punishments. It is unbelievable that child molesters are allowed to get out of jail.

Voter   October 23rd, 2009 7:14 pm ET

Someone posted: "90 sex offenders in a 5-mile radius! Why was this girl walking anywhere without an adult with her? Wow."

I agree, but the real question should be: why do we allow 90 sex offenders to live in any community? These people should be in jail without the possibility of parole – either that or be given the death penalty.

Linda   October 23rd, 2009 7:46 pm ET

While it says there are 90 sex offenders in a 5 mile radius of Somer's home, it's actually 160+. They had already interviewed at least 70 the previous day so now they've gotten thru the entire 160+ that they know of. That is one sick and I'm guessing lower income area for that many sex offenders to be within 5 miles.

I haven't seen a petition yet to sign to get stiffer penalties on the books for these sick, heartless, soul-less perverts but I'll sign one immediately. There should never be a pedophile released from prison once convicted, they should all be quarantined together like was stated earlier. It's heartbreaking that this continues to happen. I don't have children but I don't even let my cat out alone because the world is so crazy.

Willie Ellington   October 23rd, 2009 7:53 pm ET

What can we do to get the laws changed so that sexual deviants can not harm anyone especially our children. I was sexual molested as a child and I know a lot of people that were and of course no one wants to talk about it, However I do, I scream from the inside every time I see this in the news. We need tougher laws on the books. I agree with all the others as to there needs to be a place to send these people for life let them abuse each other and maybe the children will be safe.

In Orange Park   October 23rd, 2009 8:20 pm ET

Yes. 90 is the amount. The place is a haven for sexual predators. Orange Park has a fairly low cost of living versus the amount of retail and commercial business, hence the hard to employ go there. You can bet there is more than a few sickos in Orange Park.
Maybe people will get involved in their towns with community watches because of this, I hope so.

The sickos that do these things prey on the complacency of parents.

SickandTired   October 23rd, 2009 8:25 pm ET

Our judicial system certainly IS broken. Criminals get 3 square meals a day, a warm bed, free healthcare and a free education while law-abiding people are homeless, cold, starving, have no health insurance and can't afford to go to college (or they pay for it for the rest of their lives.) Criminals have all the "rights" and the victims have none. The criminal takes away the victim's rights and then our judicial system victimizes them again. It's disgusting. As soon as they prove who committed this heinous crime (whether it be a sex offender or someone else), they should be immediately put to death so there is no chance of them hurting anyone else ever again. (Perfect example: Garrido kidnapping Jaycee Dugard.) These are highly-educated people running our judicial system, yet they are too stupid to CHANGE THE LAWS.

Rika   October 23rd, 2009 8:33 pm ET

thats just sad hearing all of these little girls dying being killed it just scary thinking that could happen to little kids

Chris   October 23rd, 2009 8:52 pm ET

This story has literally made me sick to my stomach. How could a human being do something like this.Especially to a child. Why does this continue to go on,and what is this country going to do to stop this. How many more families must be devastated before serious and lethal laws are put in place to punish horrid acts like this. There should be automatic death sentences to perps who commit these disgusting crimes. No wait time, swift execution.Special method of execution should be reserved as well, one that is drawn out, painful and humiliating, just like histories method of execution. My prayers go out to the family of this little girl and prayer that the evil, twisted P.O.S who did this is captured before they strike again.

cdb70   October 23rd, 2009 9:04 pm ET

My heart goes out to the family of this innocent little girl.Pray not only for the parents but for the siblings who were with her that day, their lives are forever screwed up because of one pathetic person's disregard for life.

concerned mom   October 23rd, 2009 9:11 pm ET

some sex offenders in florida are not listed since adjudicated misdeamnor but still offended; lower count since child did not testify; i know one of these men. they have children and they live in florida but i am fearful to give name of this man ; why aren't all these offenders looked at; he had an 800.04 and not on list; he could be guilty again, you are not looking at all the possibilites.

sharon   October 23rd, 2009 10:50 pm ET

I can only imagine the pain this family is going thru at this time.My thoughts and prayers are with the family.May God help you thru this terrible tragedy.

Danielle   October 23rd, 2009 10:56 pm ET

They need to tag all these predators with devices in their brain so they can track them and if they try to offend zap it like an egg over easy. These monsters have no right to be in society let alone be around to do it again.

Elizabeth K   October 23rd, 2009 11:03 pm ET

The Killer or Killers are probably watching the News, So why on Earth would they reveal the so called secret COLOR, which is giving the Killer information to walk among them & blend in, and give him/her another opportunity to do this to yet another family. That appalls me personally, as well as many other people who watch and listen. My heart goes out to all of the friends and family. I cry too.

Roberta   October 23rd, 2009 11:30 pm ET

First, my condolences for the family. Second, Anne "only in america does this continue on and on and 9 of 10 times by a repeat offender." Are you kidding me? Only in America? Do you read the news? There was recently an article about a parent in China who witnessed his child being kidnapped and the policeman he talked to quit chasing the guy because he was off duty. The children in America are at least treated like humans by the law. I agree that laws are too lax regarding the sentencing of sex offenders. But then again, I've known people who were on the sex offenders list because they happened to be partying too hard and stumbled outside naked.

Rick Sprinkle   October 23rd, 2009 11:40 pm ET

Enforce the laws already on the books. I'm just curious but it does seem rather strange that Florida has reported some really horrific crimes the last several years in contrast to other more populated states. What has caused this spike in child related crimes that are being reported in Florida. I am afraid that many that need psychiatric help are unfortunately cycled through the legal system instead of obtaining the help they financially cannot afford. Many of these same offenders instead of getting long term care and allowed to roam "free" without any supervision. We have so much work to do in this country to help heal mental illness and get these people off the street that simply incarcerating them is not the ultimate answer.

Im_ProRFID   October 23rd, 2009 11:46 pm ET

I can not believe this. Do any of you realize how hate filled you sound?
I have been on the list since my arrest for images I downloaded off AOL and usenet in 1996-97, I spent (read barely survived) 27 months in prison and did three years of supervised probation with lie detector tests and constant psycho-sexual evaluations. Leave me and my family alone. let my children be children and grow up unharrased. Don't target us as a group. There are so many crimes that are under the sex offender umbrella now, when in reality a sex offender is not necessarily a predator. Don't Scream about what you don't understand. Read the facts. Your biggest fear shouldn't be the ones on the list, it should be the ones that haven't been caught yet.

Angelz_Tearz   October 23rd, 2009 11:55 pm ET

I find it hard to believe sometimes that we live in a society where we ALLOW CONVICTED SEXUAL PREDATORS to live among us,in our neighborhoods, between our children and their schools...children are NOT SAFE ANYWHERE anymore because there is ALWAYS someone somewhere stalking them,waiting...
They have preyed upon our children for too long...if the "system" isn't going to protect our children then we HAVE to do it ourselves...the ONLY way to keep our babies SAFE is to ELIMINATE the "problem"...1,2,10 at a time...would anyone honestly care?? probably not...how many more of society's innocent must be slaughtered before we say enough is enough...
They are NOT humans and they have NO RIGHTS...they forfeited those when they chose to prey on our children,we as parents have a GOD GIVEN RIGHT to protect our babies at ANY COST...

stacie   October 24th, 2009 12:36 am ET

I agree with everyone here who believes that stiffer sentences for crimes committed against children is part of the solution. I am a mother and was once a young girl. Let us not forget that the people in charge of making the laws work for us. If there are really this many outraged people, let's get together, via the internet and email if necessary, and voice our opinions to those with the power to change things. It tears at my heart each time I read about crimes like this. I cannot even begin to imagine how the family feels. What can we do to prevent this from happening again? Even if we could prevent just one future tragedy, let's figure something out.

richard   October 24th, 2009 1:42 am ET

if you kill a child you are no longer a human. if your guilty of killing a child you should be killed by justices hand. these pigs that murder little kids need to be fed to the gators and sharks

willie parkman   October 24th, 2009 1:48 am ET

This is a horrible crime and I feel for the families in these cases. However, I find it troubling that some of these comments use the old "boogeyman on every corner" argument. It's been proven time and time again, that most of these crimes are committed by people that are close to the children. Sure, there are exceptions to the rule. I do believe that anyone physically abuses children should be sent to prison for a good amount of time.

However, this whole thing about "sex offenders" not getting second chances. Sex offenders is just a broad term. Just because someone is on a sex offender list does not mean they physically did anything wrong to a child. In some states, urinating in public can get you on that list. You have to look at each case separately. When murder is involved, the death penalty should be on the table.

michelle (r.i)   October 24th, 2009 1:50 am ET

I have a beautiful 13 year old daughter, that i don't let out of my sight. my heart is aching for this beautiful baby girl..God bless her and give this family strength to to stay strong. like one of the other comments say..90 sex offenders within 5 miles....How do we protect our babies from just being babies trying to live a normal, fear free life? I cry every time i watch the t.v and hear this heart wrenching story. god bless this family and everybody just hug your babies daily. Somer's mother cannot blame herself.....GOD BLESS ♥

Susan   October 24th, 2009 2:19 am ET

This has hit me a little harder than most stories you hear about missing/murdered children. I lived in Orange Park for 2 years and my daughter went to the same school back then. The neighborhood wasn't as bad then but my daughter, who still lives in FL, says it's full of drug dealers and crack/meth users. I hope they find who did this and give them swift punishment.

Dawn   October 24th, 2009 2:27 am ET

Words can't express the sorrow I feel for this beautiful, innocent child and her family. My heart is so heavy for Somers family and especially her siblings. May God continue to provide strength to Somer's family, comfort them and help them to understand and accept that it is not their fault that a sick-minded evil lunatic preditor victimized their precious child. The responsible individual(s) will pay both on this earth and eternally. I have been holding my 8 year-old son closer since the release of this news. I will continue to keep this family in my prayers.

Kelly Bell   October 24th, 2009 3:46 am ET

Somer is safe, well protected and loved by God. Even though her life was short, she now lives in Peace. She has earned her Angel Wings, as She will now learn how to fly as she watches over the people who loved her the most. So go Fly beautiful Angel, it's your time to shine.

Spider   October 24th, 2009 6:20 am ET

Where have you people been?

The outrage expressed here about there being "90 sexual offenders in a 5 mile radius" is completely ignorant.

Doesn't anyone realize how someone can be convicted and tagged as a "sexual predator"?

There are numerous examples: The eighteen year old boy with the 16 year old girlfriend, until her parents have him arrested for statutory rape. Forever known and tracked as a "sex offender". How about the recent news item: A 27 year old man up at 05:30 making coffee in his own kitchen in the buff. A women out walking with her daughter spied him through the window of his own home. She had him arrested. If convicted, this innocent early bird will be saddled with "sex offender" status for the rest of his life. He may be one of the 90 within 5 square miles of your home. How chilling!!!!

Of the 90, maybe a dozen are potential suspects.

Morgan   October 24th, 2009 7:43 am ET

This story definatly saddens me. My prayer's go out to the family of this little girl. There was one comment questioning if 90 sexual offenders was a typo? Unfortunatly not, In my neighbor hood there are 235 in a 5 mile radius of my home. I DO NOT allow my children to walk home just for this reason. Times have changed our children can no longer stay outside and "play until the street light comes on".

Sandy & Ron Guimond   October 24th, 2009 8:39 am ET

In time we hope the pain eases in your hearts ,No words can make the hurt go away. But in my Prayers every night I promise to ask God to help ease the pain in your hearts. And someday be justice for everyone involved in this kind of crime against children. And that the
inhuman MONSTERs of this world will be stopped once and for all.
I Pray that theese "things" that hurt our little Angels, if not dealt with here on earth, that there punshiment after death is the worce possible torture imangable. God Bless you.

Michele   October 24th, 2009 9:09 am ET

How horrible that this has and continues to happen to the most innocent and vulnerable individuals in our society ; the children!

Those who commit these, `BEYOND' heinous, crimes are incurable and need to be destroyed!

They are worthless, leaving only a broad path of destruction without a second thought, or care, of whom it effects.

Sean   October 24th, 2009 9:20 am ET

What's even worst is that there's 90 sex offenders in a five mile radius. WOW

Dea   October 24th, 2009 9:55 am ET

And yet there is still the viagra offers coming to the inboxes of us all, the television commercials selling viagra, the new party drug and we just let it go on and on. Maybe alittle attention on how to make a pill for sexual urges to go down instead of up. I can't believe that as a society we allow viagra to invade our lives when we have sexual predators in the huge numbers in every community. I am sick of Viagra and the need for men to have pills for excitement when we clearly see the exccitement of males is destructive. How about spending that time on breast cancer or autism or anything that would better us as people besides men and their pleasure organs.

broken hearted   October 24th, 2009 10:01 am ET

After reading this story and now the Missouri girl that is missing...What is this world coming to? I don't understand...I hope they find the SOB that did this.and the government needs to tighten the law with these sexual predators....but that won't happen until it happens to one of their kids..Parents please hold on to your kids and don't let them out of your sight for one minute....because that is all it takes..People call me an overprotective mother....I say not....

i,robert   October 24th, 2009 11:00 am ET

I have a baby girl whom I love more than life itself. I can't begin to imagine what this is like for this little girl's family to go through.

I sincerely hope and have faith that the killer(s) will be found and brought to justice. If I had it my way, the trial would last for only 5 minutes and then a public execution to warn others!

What this country needs to do is block all of the pornography, violence and anything else that contributes to feed the twisted minds or prevent from minds becoming twisted from our source of entertainment and computers.

As much as the internet has become a useful and wonderful tool for knowledge, it is also has a dark, evil side to that leads to people becoming like this.

May God bless Somer's soul and may peace find her family.
This is such a tragedy...

raynewalker   October 24th, 2009 12:31 pm ET

As I wrote on another blog, when this animal is caught and convicted put him in the express line for executions.

Another thing to Consider   October 24th, 2009 12:58 pm ET

I have total empathy for the extremely heart-felt comments from everyone about the 'monsters' and wanting stiffer penalties for offenders...

But, before you write your legislator demanding the death penalty, consider this: in cases of child abduction and molestation the child is frequently the only (or main) witness. Once someone has taken a child, if they will face death regardless of whether they kill the child or release them, then I fear that you will have even MORE dead children, and not less.

Studies show that these offenses are most often spur of the moment or drug-induced. These offenders will undoubtedly rethink their offense and might let the child go; UNLESS there is nothing further to be lost by killing the child. In his or her minds, if you kill the child, there is no witness to your crime.

Please consider more dead children before advocating death for the offenders. Right now, the only incentive to keep a child alive might just be a lesser sentence. Remember: despite the coverage in the media of these extremely heinous murders, the vast majority molestations do not result in a dead child. If we change the laws, it might result in even more.

Sylvia   October 24th, 2009 1:36 pm ET

My heart and prayers go out to 7 year old Somer's & 9 year old Elizabeth's families.
No family should have to face a terrible tragedy such as the death of their little children at the hands of evil monsters. But it continues to happen. Even if you lock up every sex predator, there will always be a "friend" or even a family member, who would do terrible things to children. As parents or older siblings you have to make sure as far as humanly possible, that the young ones are protected. Young ones need this protection for just a short time only, and parents have to make sacrifices at assessing what is most precious to them. Always accompany your children to and from school/ friends' houses. and if you cannot, then get a responsible adult (even if you have to pay for their services) to do so. Do not allow even a brief window of opportunity for such terrible life-changing deeds to occur. (That was my motto as my 5 children grew up to be adults).
Rest in peace little angels Elizabeth and Somer.

Karen   October 24th, 2009 2:41 pm ET

I say Sex Offenders that are set free should be castrated so they can never do this again. Or else, they should rot in jail or be killed. They are already a waste of life! The life of these innocent children is not a waste and they are being cut short by these monsters! It's just not right!

dianna   October 24th, 2009 2:48 pm ET

What will it take to seriously do something about these sad tragic stories. We hear about Madoff, healthcare, celebrities, drama, war(all these are important) all day long but WHY DOESN"T THE PRESIDENT DO SOMETHING ABOUT THIS????
I have been thinking of somewhat of a solution and hears an idea. That prison in Cuba, Put all sex offenders there for the rest of their lives, or like that movie Castaway, with Tom Hanks, drop them out of a plane and let them all live together.
Something has to be done and it may not be "political correct" for the White House to "get involved" but if he is the leader of the free world my God do something with your power Mr. President please and let our children be free.

lam   October 24th, 2009 4:43 pm ET

May this sweet little girl RIP and sit at the right hand of the Lord because she deserves so much better than this...I agree with horrified that these monsters are not reformable they will never stop and should be put away for life or executed..thats it no more need to discuss this..enough is enough...!!! My thoughts and prayers are with this family during the most horrible time of their lives ...Laws need to change and these monsters need to be help accountable after their first offense, not their second ,third ,fourth and so on...

Terri   October 24th, 2009 9:20 pm ET

My Heart goes out to this family and my prayers are with them. This tragic story should be a reminder to others that someone else has a greather pain than another. As a parent of a deceased child I can not imagine the death of my child being killed,
Losing a child is a automatic broken heart I can only pray that somthing good can come from losing this Angel. It is just so sad that the world lost this Angel so young..

The Shadow   October 25th, 2009 3:10 am ET

It's probably teenagers or the children around her or at the very least a stranger. I would say it is a high probability that she knew her killer.

EM   October 25th, 2009 9:15 am ET

Have the police said that this is the work of sex offender yet? Or are we all jumping on the bandwagon? This little girl ran away from her siblings, could she have climbed into a bin and been killed while being tipped into the truck? Anything is possible- she has a stepfather, have they checked him out and asked the older sister if aything has happened there? How does bandwagon jumping sound now? Crimes are being tried on the internet waaaaay too much nowadays.

Nicole   October 25th, 2009 10:48 am ET

I'm sorry that it had to happend to that pretty little girl. But the story don't sound right to me. Everybody pointing the finger at other people and they are not looking at the mother. Something is not right. If that was my children I will be very upset and I will not be able to sleep. I not talking bad or making judgment about the mother but Its not right. Coming from a mother of two its hurts and I will want Somer to be lay to rest and hope that whoever did this get what they deserve. God Bless That Pretty Little Girl. May She Rest In Peace!

andrea   October 25th, 2009 12:55 pm ET

ANOTHER child abducted and killed! I notice alot of people on the news are saying to drive your children to and from school. That is NOT the answer. If the kids will stay in groups of three or more or have at least one adult walking with them, the chances of this happening to a child are very slim. As long as our lawmakers are allowing these sex offenders and other predators alike on the streets where we live, we have to make sure someone is with our child or children at all times and that they aren't wandering off alone, even for a minute. How many children die before the laws are changed for predators to live in our neighborhoods???

Lcee   October 25th, 2009 4:17 pm ET

To Diena, Somer's Mother:
I do not know you but I hurt inside for you as well :(
You are in my prayers!

As for the "sex offenders"!!! From their cells, put them all in Hard Boot Camps and then send them to the front lines of War! Too Crowded in the jails already! The Death Penalty is too good for any of them!
~ I am just hurt of all these SICKO"S taking are innocent children!!! ~

Toni in TX.   October 25th, 2009 5:15 pm ET

When I was a child growing up in the 70's my friends and I could ride our bikes everywhere, play in the creek, spend the night on the trampoline in the Summer, and today thats hardly even possible. Children can't even walk down the street to a friends house. Look at what happend to those two angels in that tiny town in OK. They were walking together around 5pm on a June afternoon just yards from one of their Mothers' house and wereshot 13 times then left in a ditch! What's up with that?!! These crimes against children are mindbogling.Where do these monsters come from that hurt children, and not to mention the elderly and disabled? This needs to stop!!!!

Carolyn Griswold   October 26th, 2009 11:17 am ET

I could not believe my eyes, at the numbers of registered sex offenders, living five miles from her home. Why didn't the people of this community know about these folks? Supposedly they have all been cleared, but what is to stop them from future crimes?

I pray that every one of these monsters, child predators, abusers, molesters, etc., are caught and never allowed to hurt another child. I question the use of the death penalty, who should be put to death or given life, but this case demands death.

These parents are suffering a never ending nightmare, but the worst is yet to come. The funeral always puts a period at the end of the sentence. They must stand by and see their child lowered into the ground. That is when finality becomes reality. I pray God helps them all.

Becky   October 26th, 2009 11:18 am ET

I hope the mother of this child catches this moron that did this before the authorities do. I can tell you right now after what this SOB did to her daughter she is the best one to give him what he deserves for hurting and killing her baby. Then once her mom is done if there is anything left then the community needs to take over.

the laws no longer protect the innocent children decent families are trying to raise and make into productive members of society. They protect the very trash they continue to let out of prison and the jails that hurt our children.

I pray that God gives this family and child peace and the family has some kind of healing and closure in what happen to this baby.

To the pig that did this I hope this childs parents get a hold of you before any law enforcement officer gets to lock you up because God knows the parents have a right to you first.

c   October 26th, 2009 3:47 pm ET

as much as i would love to say fry these perverts, a few are echoing a good point... if death penalty is the punishment for these pervs, its NOT going to deter them from grabbing a kid, instead its going to be motivation to KILL their victim, no witness, no chance to get id'ed..and by the time forensics get the perps dna/profile, he could be in timbuktu by then...but then again, we are seeing WAY too many killings of children, first somer, and now the 9 yr old in MO.
castrating them would not work they still have their eyes and hands to touch. id personally like to do away w/ them( death) but maybe a remote island prision( alcatraz, gitmo bay, ect) would be better...

nicole   October 27th, 2009 10:09 am ET

my thoughts and prayers go out to Somer's Family. I hope that the sick deranged person that commented this crime is caught and thrown into the electric chair...Only good thing about the crime taking place in Florida is that Florida is not scared to place someone on death row and met out justice. A child predator is someone that will continue to fight their impulses. They need to be placed in a society where they are not close to the population that they prey on. The US needs to toughen it laws when it comes to repeating offenders.

rowena   October 27th, 2009 1:17 pm ET

I noticed the mother is fairly young and I wondered if
any of her beaus were questioned, since there is no father.
She also wore something visible on her hair, and I
thought it was strange. Maybe her daughter liked it.

Rhonda   October 27th, 2009 1:36 pm ET

When we stop having "registered" sex offenders this will stop. Senseless killing of babies will continue to happen until legislation changes. We MUST quit letting them out. NO LENIENCY!! Once arrested for touching a child you're in jail for life.

Kat   October 27th, 2009 2:07 pm ET

What does the mothers age got to do with anything? Who said anything about her having beaus? If i recall right it did mention her having "a" boyfriend. Why does it matter what was in her hair?

nicole has a point, only good thing about this happening in florida, is that florida is a very active death penalty state!

Don   October 27th, 2009 4:09 pm ET

My thoughts and prayers go out to the family.

Reading these post has really triggered my rage at todays legal system. Over and Over we have seen that in crimes dealing with children mostly are done by a child predator. What has happened to our awesome country to where we cannot let our children be out of our sight for even a moment. WE have become to soft on these crimes, THEY should NOT be allowed to walk our streets, THEY should be tagged and treated like the lowest scum on earth, and that is still to good for them. These type of people do not deserve to live.
Now we are all assuming that this is what happened to this beautiful child, so we will have to wait and see. My opinion is that if this was done by an convicted child predator/molestor and was released from jail or freed by a lawyer then he/she (Lawyer) to should be held accountable. OUR LEGAL system is to soft, maybe this way these scum bags will not get those lawyers to do whatever possible to get them released. Just look at the case of Jacee Dugard, that scum bag was suppose to have stayed in jail but NO HE WAS RELEASED, come on America get a grip on this and keep them in prison or execute them all. Bring the death penalty back in all states, make these people scared, if that is possible.

Teri   October 27th, 2009 7:53 pm ET

DEATH PENALTY!! I believe in the death penalty for these sick perverts – they know what's right and what's wrong and I believe they should get what they deserve and that is the Death Penalty – they have no right to live in this world – they are damaging our children. Ankel bracelets, registering, and treatments do not fix these people – nothing will, the best thing that can be done is to save our kids of today and tomorrow from these sick people and put them to DEATH!!

john rizzuto   October 27th, 2009 11:48 pm ET

the system favors the SCUMBAGS.

Denise   October 28th, 2009 2:16 pm ET

where was the mother? I saw her talking and for some reason I did not feel her pain although my heart goes out to her it just did not feel real to me she seem to be crying but get there are no tears this is bothing to me...........check mom's story........

Jerin Hyneman   October 28th, 2009 2:19 pm ET

I lived over 20 years under a purpetrator as did Charlene. My familty and I still consider it a miracle that my children and I did not end up dead. You have to live in that situation to know how it is to live in survivial mode all the time. The brain does not allow you to know or understand all that you are going through. I identify with Charlene, but I don't understand why she did not bring out in court that his hands, arms and fists were HIS WEAPONS.

Sherri   October 28th, 2009 4:06 pm ET

I don't think we stand a chance of changing the law to save our children. You get more time for harming an animal than a child. When our so called goverment is on tv daily for adultry, solicitaing prostiutes, etc.... I wonder how many are pediophiles? I don't even think anyone who harms a child should go to prison, I say walk them out of the court room had a gun to the Mother and Father of the victim and let them fire away. BOOM. Gone, end of problem, next.............

Jo   October 28th, 2009 7:51 pm ET

When will OUR government listen to all the victims? This has to stop right now, there is no reason a child should live in fear but yet everyday on the news another child missing ,dead or raped when are the people in this country going to OPEN there EYES?and scream at evey public official and DEMAND CHANGE

msjones   October 29th, 2009 8:24 am ET

I live in a small town you have SICKO every were you just got to watch your babys even move,.who ever done this live around her and watch the coming and going of the kids in that town im not sure mama know anymore than the kids told her .but guestion them more it the small thing that matter that they have not said .who talk to them everyday coming home ,who you see walking home everyday do they talk are walk together with the kids did they be friend sommer. I WILL NEVER UNSTAND WHAT THEY SEE IN BABY BUT TO LOVE THEM .

LoveOneAnother   October 29th, 2009 12:36 pm ET

Please parents, do not let your children go out ANYWHERE without supervision. I lost my daughter at age 40 to a childhood illness. I know what it's like to lose a child. But to lose a child at such a young age to evil perpetrated by another has to be the most painful experience in life.

I am raising her daughter, who is 12. I never let her go outside unless I am with her. I know it may seem overprotective. We live in a beautiful upper middle-class neighborhood. That means nothing. Evil abounds everywhere. I have made my granddaughter aware of the dangers and though she is not living a life of fear, she is mindful that she must be careful and watchful all the time, everwhere.

All sexual predators are not registered because all have not acted upon their desires. We must be proactive. We are losing our precious children.

To the family of Somer. I am so sorry you have lost your precious one. My God grant you peace.

angel   October 29th, 2009 1:21 pm ET

This murder of this littlle girl has effected so many people not just who knew her . Lets hope law inforcment finds who did this and they get the death penalty. It's time for the USA to step up on child killers and start executing them. These individuals have no place on earth or sex offenders. Every day we hear these stories and it seems our justice system is a joke. Nothing anyone can say or do to bring back this little prescious baby girl. Condolences go out to the family. Lets see justice done for Somer Thompson. No Mercy to child killers.

angel   October 29th, 2009 1:26 pm ET

Its time to start executing sex offenders and any child killers. There is no place in society for these criminals. Lets hope they catch who ever did this. So child killers if your reading this we are going to catch you.

LoveOneAnother   October 29th, 2009 3:00 pm ET

While punishment of these offenders is the just way to deal with their actions, as long as Evil is in this world, these things will continue.

As quickly as we catch them, more come out of the woodwork. Seeds are planted on the Internet, magazines, and other media. Those seeds take root and another sex offender is created. They have no fear of retribution. They are focused only on the acts that they are perpetrating.

The only defense against this heinous activity is that parents MUST take responsibility to protect their children. It's a shame that children cannot run free and enjoy life.

There is nothing more horrible than preying on the innocent. Evil has no conscience. It feeds on itself. It has become like a horrible epidemic. The antidote is love.

melissa   October 29th, 2009 4:16 pm ET

I sincerely hope they find this sicko.... and as so many post on here say alot of these crimes happen b/c of the weak punishments they receive, i know in the state of SC you can get more time for selling drugs than for murder or being a perverted pedofile... i personally know of a case where a man strangled a mother of four in front of her smallest child and was able to plea bargain manslaughter and only got 5 years and served 2!!! in another case there was a local daycare where a pervert lived next door and molested several of the children there and he got 15 years (although he has damaged these children for the rest of their lives) and then i know a guy who got caught selling crack, he got 30 years... hmmm? i don't think the crack dealer made anyone buy those drugs, hell they don't have to solicite, and if we really wanted to fix our drug problems, lets put away all these violent offenders and quit destroying more lives to where alot people are so depressed they turn to drugs... and oh yeah after the guy got 30 years, his cousin is selling in his spot now... so what really did they accomplish! The SC court system let a murderer out of jail in 2 years, a pedofile who harmed several children many times will probably be out in less than ten, and then we have the guy who was selling drugs he will see well over 20 years before he gets out... now, i think we need to do a complete overhaul of "justice system"

Debatekid   October 29th, 2009 5:11 pm ET

These offenders don't care about reputation, work, family, or feelings. While you might think that parents need to take more responsibility I ask you to please think again. Parents everywhere take responsibility over and for the children all the time and yet we still have these things happen. Its not bad enough that children have things like this happen to them, so lets toss parents into the mix, NO THANK YOU. Now if by responsibility you mean warning them about they danger, and showing them what to do if they think that they are in danger, then okay whats that going to hurt. But then you hit reality; No matter what we do these things are always going to happen. Sure we can be over protective and keep our children locked away from society but that wont solve anything.

Phoenix   October 29th, 2009 5:25 pm ET

Have the autopsy results been made public? Perhaps this horrible thing that happened was not sexually motivated.

Freedom   October 30th, 2009 10:34 am ET

Some of these comments scare me. I would notice that most of these cases happen in states where the death penalty is available. Clearly it has a tremendous deterrent effect. I would remind people who want to execute everybody that this country has many people on death row who then get found guilty. Are you prepared to have the deaths of innocent people on your hands because you wanted vengeance. My heart goes out to the families of all who lose children in such a tragic way . But remember that the police have ruled out the registered sex offenders in the case the blame for this lies elsewhere. Don't kill innocent people out of anger. The death penalty is not a deterrent to the people who commit these kinds of crimes. You or me absolutely but we would do something like this. To those who commit heinous crime it does not deter them. Until we can be confident that we are not adding more trauma by killing innocent people lets hold off on executing people.

Don   October 30th, 2009 1:47 pm ET

Freedom; I understand were you are coming from, but listen with the advances we have in DNA and all of the other technologies if these sick morons are convicted by their peers then they deserve to die by execution it this bothers people then so bo it. Our lack of holding criminals responsible for the crimes they commit has severly softened. The criminals in the US know this and use this to their advantage. I would be the first in line to pull the plug if needed to execute these sick morons. I have zero tolerance for individuals who commits a crimes, which they willingly take a life of a child. Some people don't agree with the death penalty, that's the great thing about our country but there is a time and place for everything and the death penalty will work if it is done without prejudice. For all of the people who read these blogs and don't feel like the death penalty is appropriate, let me ask you this; Would you feel the same if someone took the life of your mom, dad, sister, brother, son daughter, or anyone else in your family, or would you be sitting next to the killer/rapist/molester and say gee not sure so lets go easy on the punishment. Execute them, is what I say, and believe it or not I am a very peaceful person, but there is a time when we have to protect our young ones. I am a parent and I do watch over my children, god forbids if someone ever hurts them, but if they do there will be NO compassion from me to the individual who commited the crime. I WOULD PULL THE TRIGGER MYSELF....

Carol   October 30th, 2009 2:48 pm ET

I think that whoever did this horrible act is someone much closer to this child than someone who lived in the neighborhood.
That house that was so close to her's that maybe who ever did this horrible act was close to the family because he or she knew what time they came down the street and waited for them and hoped they would get into a fight and she would take off because it probably happened before.
I think a lot of money is being spent to interview the people that seems to be the ones that did it.

MAY GOD BLESS THIS INNOCENT CHILD AND HER ENTIRE FAMILY NOW AND FOR ALL TIME AS I AM SURE HE WILL!!!

emilylove   November 2nd, 2009 12:29 am ET

This is a horrible horrible crime why would anyone kill such a beatiful inocent child i truly believe that they should give the death penalty to anyone who kills a child mayby just mayby they will think twice before harming our little angels. It makes me sick to think that anyone could harm my daughter i think that if anyone ever harmed my little angel i would go and do whatever they did to my daughter 10 times worst.

CindyD   November 2nd, 2009 1:46 pm ET

90 sex offenders in five miles? Again, sounds crazy...... but I say one conviction gets them a lifetime trip to an island with all the other crazies. Drop them rations every month by air and let them fend for themselves. Let them molest and kill each other and not our children. DO NOT TOUCH OUR CHILDREN! The message should be loud and clear.

Asia James   November 2nd, 2009 1:54 pm ET

It is always a horrendous tragedy, when a young child is lost, no matter what the circumstances are. It is absolutely horrifying when it is the result of a brutal murder. It makes me sick to my stomach to think that anyone could be so heartless, and lack humanity. This case is SCREAMING for justice, (as are hundreds of others.) So far law enforcement has been diligent and comprehensive in their work, and deserve great praise. Sexual Offenders are a continuous threat to society, as long as they are free. When ever this sick person is found they deserve No bail, No Probation, No Parole, no Sentencing the only thing that will be made as Justice is Life In Prision OR THE DEATH PENALTY.

Jessika   November 3rd, 2009 12:40 pm ET

My condolences go out to her mother, as well as her family. My questions is, why after time & time again hearing about children who are kidnapped and murdered. Do you continue to allow your children to walk home alone? 7 years old? I have three children, oldest being 8 years old, and I would NEVER allow him to walk home alone, or him to play with his friends unsupervised outside. No, I am not saying live in fear, but be a lot more cautious with your children. I refuse to be on the news crying because one of my children is missing, because I felt it easier for me to let them run around outside by themselves than to be out there supervising them.

angel   November 5th, 2009 1:40 pm ET

Who ever murdered Somer needs to be executed. Lets hope they catch this person or individuals. Its time to execute all sex offenders and child killers. what is going to take for the USA to wake up and start inforcing the laws. So sad this little girl lost her innocent life

Liz   November 5th, 2009 2:41 pm ET

The ideal punishment for these types of offeders is the removal of the object that allows them to commit these crimes. If you get my meaning. Lord help this family. If it was my child the cops better hope they would find him before I did.

Mike Borrelli, Florida   November 5th, 2009 10:37 pm ET

Sex offenders are not rehabilitable according to many professionals
I have heard, they will not change so they should in my opinion
be locked up and not released except upon their death. No room
in our prisons, well lets start releasing non-violent offenders, stop
incarcerating non-violent offenders, I beleive that half the people in
prisons are drug offenders, if they are non violent, set them loose
and their will be room for the sick preditors that are preying on our
children and women. When are the lawmakers going to step up and
change the laws. Lets get rid of 90% of the drug task force and put
them on the streets tracking released sex offenders. This is an
epidemic that is out of control and our goverment seems to be ignoring it like it will go away. They give billions to AIG, GM, banks, etc but do nothing
to stop the killing of innocent taxpaying citizens, this is outrageous
and a disgrace to our country. Spend some of our money protecting
us for a change.

Mike Borrelli, Florida   November 5th, 2009 10:50 pm ET

Our goverment is so busy fighting terrorist in all these other
countries and spending billions of our tax money while us
Americans are being subjected to terrorism right here in the
United States everyday. Write to President Obama and tell
him to do something about the predators here in our country
killing our children and women.

Ainge RE   November 6th, 2009 10:05 am ET

These children that are snatched off the street (seems to be happening all the time of late) often, if they live, become the victims of child slavery/ prostitution. Sometimes I believe there is a premium paid to get kids compliant w/ their captors, eventually , and trained (maybe even treated well) to do whatever is needed of them. Someone(s) higher up than the 'risk-takers' (actual kidnappers) then sell/buy these kids and send them off God knows where.....sometimes major city U.S.A.... maybe w/ a new name..etc. If something goes wrong, or kid fights back or, the law enforement/political pressure gets too great, they probably see no other way out than murder. This is not, by any means, justification. I mean, what else makes sense? People don't do much without their being money or some other favor involved...I find it hard to believe there are that many sickos out there who just get off on killing kids.
My apologies if I don't have anything to say about this particular child or case except 'God Bless' she and her family.

angel   November 10th, 2009 1:54 pm ET

What is it going to take for the USA to wake up, child killers need to be executed. Lets hope this case is kept alive and justice will come soon for Somer. No mercy to child killers. It seems we hear about this more and more and nothing is being done about it. Its time for change to the justice system. So disgusted of all these innocent children being murdered so senseless.

Sandra mazzuca   November 11th, 2009 11:06 am ET

This is such a horrific case. Channon and Chris were tortured,. Cobbins had a chance to let her go but instead wanted oral sex. If I were in charge of the govt. The four of them should be tortured. I have chris and Channon on my mind 24 hrs a day. It actually makes me ill. The four of the suspects should get the death penalty but make it slow and painful. My thoughts and prayers are with their loved ones.

JLP   November 13th, 2009 10:33 am ET

We need to have condo's for sex offenders–they should be made to live together and far away from schools and children.

What does it take for the government to wake up and deal with these people? Either leave them in jail or place them in areas where they are guarded.
JLP

Erin   November 13th, 2009 3:29 pm ET

Sex offenders are repeat criminals who commit heinous crimes. How does this not affect how aggressively and harshly they are treated in our justice system? Think of how many news reports you see where a child dies and social services and police new of problems in the home or the criminal was a known sex offender? Children are not safe out in the world, in their own homes or on the internet. I have no sympathy for child sex offenders and child abusers and no hope they will ever be not be dangerous criminals. Let’s throw the book at them, always.

Jennifer Beck   November 16th, 2009 4:20 pm ET

AMEN to mike b in florida!!! what is it gonna take for AMERICA to realize that we have to help our children in AMERICA to be safe?? Obama and our government need to get off their butts and start cracking down on these sex-offenders!!!
jail obviously doesn't work cuz they have time to master-mind another victim!!!
i am a parent of 4 children and i couldn't imagine what somer and her family are going thru...my guards are up higher than they've ever been w/ my children...our children aren't even safe going to school anymore...
we live in AMERICA, what is AMERICA coming to??? i can answer that...lol..
somer, you and ur family are in my prayers!!!
