NEW YORK – People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals is asking Barack Obama to take a more humane approach to flies in the White House. As in house flies. As if the president of the United States doesn't have bigger things to worry about. Apparently PETA doesn't think so because they are actually sending the "flyswatter in chief" a Katcha Bug Humane Bug Catcher. The 'Katcha Bug' is a humane bug catcher of some sort, a device that would allow the President to trap a house fly and then release it outside. PETA says the device ensures compassion for the “smallest and least sympathetic animals” – the fly. (Last I checked the housefly was an insect. Not an animal, but that's another discussion for another day).

The current controversy started during a television interview at the White House on Tuesday, during which a fly went by. Ever cool, Mr. Obama shooed it. When that didn't work he waited for the fly to settle and smacked - dead. This was a show of strength from our president at a time when our country needs a strong leader.

As for the fly, I mean animal, if PETA really cares about their ethical treatment, it should take a look at Obama's voting record in the Senate, which was pretty good on animal rights.

And more to the point, what PETA is asking of our president would simply not be presidential.
It is precisely the kind of nonsense that makes PETA ineffective, if not a laughing-stock among do-gooder organizations. do we really want our commander-in-chief to carry a 'Katcha Bug' with him everywhere he goes? Or perhaps we want to spend our tax dollars to hire a 'Katcha Bug' carrier to walk with the president at all times. Maybe we ought to assign a secret service agent that task? Or perhaps the president should simply do what that old lady did, and swallow the fly?

Jami...........A fly is either an animal or a plant. Figure it out. None the less, I'm all for swatting them!

terrie drayton   June 18th, 2009 7:52 pm ET

last time i checked flies were considered a type of animal not that i agree with peta but go back to school and look it up please

Hal   June 18th, 2009 8:16 pm ET

Another proof that the entire PETA community should seek psychiatric help instead of interjecting their nonsense onto society. How about President Obama walking around with a frog in his pocket or a can of RAID FLYING INSECT KILLER?!!

LONNIE   June 18th, 2009 9:40 pm ET

Jamie, maybe you may want to go back over Obama's voting record and explain why he didn't vote 234 times while he was in the Senate!!

Pam   June 18th, 2009 10:51 pm ET

PETA has made their cause, which is a fairly good one, and made it a joke. Not only are we now worrying about flies now, but they came to the Midwest during that horrible flooding and made fools of themselves then, also. Hogs were trapped in the flood waters and many of them had to be shot rather than let them suffer from starvation or worse. Instead of rolling up their sleeves and offering a helping hand, they sat on their duffs and passed judgment on farmers and deputies who were trying their best to handle a very difficult situation. It was not pleasant for farmers to have to destroy the very animals that provide them some income. They need to disband or re-evaluate their Mission Statement.

annawolf   June 19th, 2009 2:27 am ET

Flies carry diseases! This is another example of PETA's total disregard of Human Beings.
I love all life and go out of my way not to harm anything but I would never put an animal before a person. PETA people could care less if a human child is suffering but my lord don't swat a fly.

LauraJ   June 19th, 2009 6:56 am ET

This is a bit too much–I always backed PETA,however issuing a statement about the leader of our nation "swatting at a fly"–get over it.Support our president...peace !!!

jen   June 19th, 2009 8:07 am ET

Jami,

You show so much compasion for Obama. He's so perfect, he can do no wrong. Are you on the white house payroll? Why are you not working for him? You are his biggest supporter.

Won't you be sad the day he is voted out of office? Whatever will you do?

lois   June 19th, 2009 8:34 am ET

give me a break, these peta people need to get a grip. i bet if they saw a homeless person getting his ass whooped they wouldt give two shi ts.

Spider   June 19th, 2009 8:45 am ET

Our country needs a strong leader. No doubt.

The problem is with starry eyed people like you, Jami. All he has to do is swat a fly and you consider it a show of strength?

The PETA stuff is ignorant. I'm all for humane treatment of animals, but this carries it too far. Should I not stomp on cockroaches either? PETA is ineffective and a waste of time. This is an attempt to put their name in the news. Pure and simple.

SheWolf   June 19th, 2009 9:23 am ET

This is the most rediculous thing i have EVER heard! How can peta expect any one to stand behind them when they say such non sense. Although i have never gone in depth to find out about peta , I did think I understood their ideas.. How wrong was I!! Now I just find them silly radicals. Flies are NOT animals and they are filthy germ carriers.. They can send me one of those fly catchers... but i can promise not one would be released..

Maria   June 19th, 2009 9:39 am ET

I think all this is a joke. please its a fly. i mean are we going to let ALL the flies alive, do you really think that is going to happen. I think just because he is the president people (some) are making it a big deal.

Dee, Winchester, KY   June 19th, 2009 9:55 am ET

Jami, this is your best commentary yet! Love it!!

PETA NEEDS A REAL GOAL   June 19th, 2009 10:44 am ET

Do these idiots read what they are putting out? A fly is not an animal that deserves any news coverage or concern from PETA. I guess we should let flys and mosquitos suck us dry or spread disease around the world. Let's get the economy straightened out by taxing PETA every time that take a crazy stand like this!

Ruth   June 19th, 2009 11:07 am ET

Just another example of the folks at PETA making fools of themselves. Who really takes them seriously anymore? Pres. Obama did just what most of us would have done in this situation. Besides, flies are nasty and carry all sorts of germs. The only good fly is a dead fly. And that's my last word.

Art   June 19th, 2009 11:11 am ET

See Jami, PETA only saw what they wanted to see. Obviously they didn't follow through on the story.

Washington (AP): The fly community is outraged by the blatant murder of ones of its own by the nations leader. Charges have been filed for first degree fly murder and the flysecutor stated "this man will be punished. Punished to the highest extent of the flylaws."

Services for the fly will be held at 2:30PM Saturday followed by a gathering of they flys at the local dump.

Jess   June 19th, 2009 11:23 am ET

Couldn't agree more. I still remember PETA asking Ben & Jerry's to use women's breast milk instead of cow milk.

I ALSO will never understand how PETA loves to flood your mailbox with there crap but they are all about saving animals. How about you SAVE SOME TREES which most animals LIVE in/etc.

Pat Miller   June 19th, 2009 11:26 am ET

P.E.T.A. is all up in arms over a fly that the President killed, but the choose to ignore the fact that Sarah Palin authorizes the aerial shooting of Wolves, murdering Polar Bears and Seals. I lost any confidance in P.E.T.A. simply because they don't truly care about the animals they only care about the incidents that will get them press. Once P.E.T.A. practices what they preach I might support them. Until then I will only support the true Animal Rights Groups. Does P.E.T.A. go after their own members every time they step on an ant? Why don't you hear about P.E.T.A. going after the puppy mills, the people who have far too many animals and let the animals starve? Instead you hear them going crazy over a dead fly. P.E.T.A. should be disbanned. They do not care about the animals they care about the press

terri   June 19th, 2009 11:33 am ET

I'm an animal lover, but I'm with you, Jami, a line must be drawn somewhere. If PETA wants to be respected (and financially supported), they must "get REAL". Whomever decided to make an issue over our President and the pest obviously has an obsessive/compulsive personality disorder to say the least.

I think if the organization needs free press that badly, they are a sorry bunch and would be well-served with new leadership.

That said, I remember my young nephew standing at the screen door with a flyswatter staring intently at a fly. When I asked why he didn't just swat it, his immediate response was "I'm giving him a chance to say his prayers first." Maybe President Obama could try this approach. ;-)

Marsha   June 19th, 2009 11:38 am ET

PETA, I have finally heard it all. Amazing.

Interested_Party   June 19th, 2009 12:23 pm ET

Please don't tell me that someone is making a big deal about the President killing a fly. Come On! It was a fly. Everybody kills flies–even members of PETA. A fly is not an animal. It is a bug as in gets on people's nerves. I can't say anything more. I'm totally speechless that this even made it to the news.

Charles Gangi   June 19th, 2009 12:43 pm ET

Ms Floyd should brush up on her basic science education. She stated a fly wasn't an animal but rather an insect! Maybe she made this silly remark due to her desire to defend the President; maybe she just doesn't know any better.

Beth rankin   June 19th, 2009 12:57 pm ET

Your blog was "spot on" regarding PETA's response to "the fly swat.". Thanks!
However, as a science teaher I wanted to say insects are apart of the animal kingdom and therefore are "technically" considered animals!
Thanks again for the blog.
Beth

Rico   June 19th, 2009 1:35 pm ET

PETA.........totally ridiculous as usual. PETA just go away!!

Sylvia   June 19th, 2009 2:18 pm ET

I hope that PETA advocates and members don't drive cars! How do those people ever explain the bugs that die on their windshield – that they committed suicide?

Chester   June 19th, 2009 2:26 pm ET

PETA Pathetic Excuse To Accuse

Christopher in Kalaheo   June 19th, 2009 2:53 pm ET

I am embarrassed that the media, and PETA have made such a big thing about a man swatting a fly. "Have you no decency?"

Chris F.   June 19th, 2009 3:23 pm ET

I am a card carrying member of PETA and I do support them; however I must say this does go way-way too far. PETA really does a lot of good for many animals in our country and around the world. What sold me on PETA was when I read an article on how cats and dogs in Asian countries are skinned alive for their fur. Did you know that dog and cat fur in Asian countries is worth a great deal of money? The thought of it actually made me nauseated and bothered me for a few days. I am proud to be a financial supporter of PETA, but I don’t think that I would appreciate any money going to this new cause of saving flies!!

ruth kravette   June 19th, 2009 3:33 pm ET

I think Congress should pass a bill creating " Swat a Fly Week" I will be happy to participate as often as necessary.

GINA   June 19th, 2009 4:06 pm ET

ARE YOU KIDDING ME????? they are really going to make a big deal out of this ......Come on poeple PETA people are they really suspended in air because ants crawl all over the floor all the time and not one of youhave ever stepped on one.....ANT KILLERS!!!! please give me a break

Dazed and   June 23rd, 2009 3:04 pm ET

This is TOO silly for words! I mean, really!

My dog, Panda, catches them in mid air and kills them (I thinks she eats them sometimes, too, by the way). Neat little trick she learned on her own too! What am I supposed to do NOW? Buy one of those katcha bugs thingies and teach HER how to use it anytime she feels compelled to want to murder a fly or any other insect??

I use to be all for the work that PETA does (or at least has done in the past), but lately, they seem to be putting forth some really LAME stuff (the Ben & Jerry's thing, and now this).

These days, I guess they really are living by the words "ANY publicity is better than NO publicity."

Gamme   June 24th, 2009 4:00 pm ET

Total Ridiculous, the entire incident and all the fallout and commentaries afterwards!!! This country has more important matters to attend to than worrying about a dead fly. And a fly is an insect! Not a animal, not a plant!

Confused   June 25th, 2009 5:07 pm ET

hahaha, is this a real story?? I thought it was sarcasm when I first read it. wow.

everydayjoe   June 29th, 2009 1:15 pm ET

lmao, being from the south our heritage is one that embraces fishing and hunting now dont get me wrong i dont and never will condone needless or in humane treatment of animals. but ask peta what happens when they put one thier ''scantly clad mermaids" on a floating dock and harress fishermen. or send women wearing only cabbage leaves in to dove fields beating drums and pans with sticks. and let's not forget what happens when they release those zealot idoitic men into field to as they said ,,wrest the murdering weapons from their cold hands by force. been there saw it all,, wonder why they condone abortion? guess it ok to kill humans

LaShonda   July 2nd, 2009 4:57 pm ET

PETA, Wow, shame on them!
Let's take a look at this situation. When human committs a crime they are tried, punished and maybe put to death or serve life in prison, correct?

So, what makes a fly different. A fly blows on your food, lands on your face and skin, goes through the garbage and becomes a maggott. Most severely, a fly can bite you and cause trauma to your skin. Seriously, how inhumane of PETA, intendig to file chargesagainst the president for protecting his territory from danger or harm!

This is exactly the type of injustice that starts the topic of racial descrimination! PETA needs to be seen by the NAACP, slander and libel are crimes and you need to be charged and punished!

nasafemme   July 8th, 2009 1:41 pm ET

PETA people are laughable but at least they know that an insect is an animal. Last time I checked, insects belong to the phylum arthropoda (along with crustaceans and arachnids) and are part of the invertebrate group of the animal kingdom.

netheron   July 15th, 2009 2:29 pm ET

You must understand that being the president of the united states requires you to "Do the right thing" so Mr. Obama will always be under the spotlight. If killing the fly was the wrong thing so be it. He did it anyway.

Armando Reyes   September 21st, 2009 5:20 pm ET

About the Worthingtons case.
The same Jesus Christ who empowered his followers with the gift healing by the Laying of hands also said "It is not him who is healthy who needs a doctor but those who are sick". (Matthew 9:12)

Thank you.
