Childhood friend says defendant shot teens

Posted: 09:51 AM ET

ALBUQUERQUE, New Mexico–Brandon Craig is set to begin his defense today after prosecutors called their final witness yesterday, a third person who claims Craig was behind the triple homicide in 1999 that went unsolved for years.

Jeffrey Moore on the witness stand

Jeffrey Moore, the defendant’s childhood friend, testified Craig fired into the orange car carrying three teenagers the night of May 29, 1999 and then terrorized him into helping him get rid of the gun used in the shooting.

“It happened very quick,” said Moore, describing the shooting for the jury. “He [Craig] walked in a half moon shape, moving in the front of the car from the passenger side to the driver’s side back and forth.”

Moore said after the shooting Craig threw the rifle on the floor by his feet and they drove out of the area without any lights on at a high rate of speed. Moore said they drove to trailer where Luke Morris’s father lived, where he waited outside. He suspected Craig went there to destroy the weapon then place the different parts in garbage bags.

“I was ordered to get a garbage bag and throw it,” Moore said. “Brandon told me I was throwing a bag, so if one person went down everyone was going down.”

Defense Attorney Pamela Mackey suggested on cross-examination that Moore caved to police pressure to talk, and that any details he had about the crime were fed to him during repeated police interrogations.

Craig has pleaded not guilty to all charges and maintains the State’s star witnesses are lying to escape their own legal problems.

why would jeff moore pic craig as the shooter if he didnt hav contact with the other witnesses in years, regardless of police interviews, media , newspapers which provided details of the case. why didnt he pick one of the other witnesses.....joe, medford, nj

c colberg   March 27th, 2009 10:52 am ET

why would three different people out of the clear blue concoct a story like this. Even though the witnesses are not to credible, making up a story like this to recieve reduced sentances on other charges is not a good defense. Guilty

Lydia   March 27th, 2009 11:18 am ET

Regardless about the credibility of the 3 star witnesses they all saw Craig shoot these 3 boys and they were all afraid too come forward in fear of their own lives I say GUILTY all the way !!!!!!

Kathie, Ontario. Canada   March 27th, 2009 11:31 am ET

heard the lawyer who was standing in for Lisa Bloom say,
"if the defendant didn't do it who did "? How about the guy
who supplied the female witness with the drugs , who had
the connections with the Mexican cartell? Maybe, he
was driving the black SUV and had the assault weapon.
Doesn't this type of overkill just smack of the way people
are being killed south of the border. Makes sense she
would be afraid to implicate him in this crime and want to
pin it on someone like the defendant.

Ken   March 27th, 2009 12:10 pm ET

This prosecution team seems sooooo inefecitve. It's almost like they know they don't have a very strong case and are just going through the motions....I realize they don't have the strongest witnesses; I 'm sorry for the families of the three victoms...The deserve better

Randy Ritter   March 27th, 2009 12:31 pm ET

From everything we've heard, it's a strong probability that the 3 eye-witnesses and the defendant were present at the time of the crime. Does it really matter if Craig was the actual triggerman? Can the jury convict him if they simply believe he was at the scene that night?

Kathy   March 27th, 2009 12:49 pm ET

Lets just hope that the jury has more common sense than the 69% who say the prosecution has proved its case. I guess maybe it would be understandable that many states are doing away with the death penalty if we have people like the 69% on jury's! I think the prosecution has had it with their three witnesses, Larry, Moe, and Curly. I do hope they can find the real killer for the families benefit, but I would look close at this Luke character.

Sheila Hastings   March 27th, 2009 12:52 pm ET

You need to keep in mind that ALL of the witnesses were using drugs, at the time of the murders, and unless they kept a journal, most likely wouldn't remember exact dates and places. (I sure couldn't remember who were all present at a party I attended 10 yrs. ago!) But, if I were present when someone was murdered, I would surely remember, vividly, what happened during the incident.

Joseph,Palm Coast,Fl   March 27th, 2009 12:55 pm ET

I see no way the prosecution wins this case .To many lies to believe anything said by the three star witnesses.

Butch   March 27th, 2009 1:26 pm ET

It"s pretty clear that the police got the answers they wanted,to the truth of the murders. I think everyone involved should be acountable for there actions.

Ken   March 27th, 2009 1:29 pm ET

I absolutely cannot comprehend why the prosecution did not challenge/raise the doubt that the recovery tow truck or the auto recovery vehicle did not cause the damage to the victom's car! The undercarriage marks, as well as, the dented front fender are the exact types of damage that are made by recovery efforts.

Laura Foster   March 27th, 2009 2:02 pm ET

There is no way that this man can be found guilty beyond a shadow of a doubt, the defense is doing a great job!

Marcie   March 27th, 2009 2:12 pm ET

Did anyone catch the last testimony where Sanchez said her son Nate was living in her home? Well think back to Luke he said a day or two after the murders he was hangin out with a guy named nate he didn't know his last name and he also stated that this guy Nate had a dark colored suv and remeber the witness who thought the guy was hollaring Frank or hank well what about from a distance NATE man this is a breakthrough I think I want to get this to the prosecution

Marcie   March 27th, 2009 2:16 pm ET

P.S. he was conveniently given a job by Luke Morris, father shortly after the murders

paul smith   March 27th, 2009 2:23 pm ET

Comment regarding Jocelyn's best friend in 99. Did the prosecutors'
pick up on the point she made that Jocelyn did not attend her wedding.
May this not be a reason for her being truthful?

neal   March 27th, 2009 2:41 pm ET

NOT beyond the shadow of a doubt...not guilty, in my opinion. However, I believe the jury will deadlock!

Chris, Kenosha WI   March 27th, 2009 2:52 pm ET

This is one of the first cases I have watched that I am really unsure of the quilt or innocence of the defendant, and I am thankful I‘m not on this jury. First the witnesses’ who were first at the scene and gave a description of two different vehicles: an SUV and a Pickup. The very first person on the scene said his wife saw a pickup and an SUV and he saw an SUV. In her 911 call I believe she states there are three vehicles, which included the victims. Apparently Brandon was in a pickup that night; so who then was in the SUV that so many people saw? There was that first officer going to the scene who did see a dark pickup coming toward him with the lights off. Why he didn’t go after it is beyond me; however it does put a pickup there. Then there is the witness today who was Jocelyn Schneider’s roommate and best friend. She said that she knew all of Jocelyn’s friends and she didn’t meet Brandon until a later date that year. Also the witness who testified that he introduced Brandon to Jocelyn and it was after this murder. Granted it does sound like all of them were very-very heavy into drugs and drinking; so who knows what the reality really is to them at that time. There is also the fact that through history it has been proven that when more then one person is involved in a crime usually they start rolling over on each other. I personally have to much doubt to say he is guilty.

Sheila Hastings   March 27th, 2009 3:40 pm ET

I agree with you, Ken. I seen, towards the end of the show, when Jack Ford was talking with one of the victims' mother, (her son owned the car) that she said her son had gotten damage to the car a couple of weeks prior to the murders. I certainly hope that the prosecution brings it up later. At least in their summation. I had a new doubt in the testimony, when the damage to the car was brought out, until I heard the mother explain the damage. So, I'm sure the jury did too. And they can't see or hear anything talked about outside of the courtroom.

trisha purney   March 27th, 2009 5:09 pm ET

is it possible that the tow truck damaged the right front fender of the datsun?

Doris H   March 27th, 2009 6:22 pm ET

Well the prosecution did bring up that the car had been wrecked three times in the past six months. I think there is more to come. I so agree with Sheila here. Kathy you seem to not be looking at the entire picture. The defense is grasping right now these people they are bringing forward are not any more credible with the exception of the first witness and I don't think she helped the defense today. Also do you people have any clue what kind of person Brandon is? Not an angel. Just do some research and you will find. Leading a double life here and in PA. Long criminal record. Problems with military.

Doris De   March 27th, 2009 6:29 pm ET

Brandon Craig is guilty. No doubt about it. I agree with those that think: Why, Why would 3 witnesses make up a story whole cloth to point the finger at an innocent man? Does not happen. Does not make sense. What does happen is: Teenagers drinking and taking drugs, then witnessing a terrible event, then do more drugs to cope & memories get foggy. If all had "crisp memories" of the event, then I'd be suspicious of them. I hope the jury uses common sense, as they will be admonished by the judge, and finally convict the person that shot those kids.

Tracy   March 27th, 2009 7:27 pm ET

I believe Jeffrey Moore and all the star witnessess, they may have had issues in the past with drugs and lies, but I also believe everyone grows up at some point too and were probablly sick of carrying around this horrible crime and protecting someone who truly does not deserve to be protected. These witnessess are not enemies of Brandon Craig but family members, an ex-girlfriend and a long time best friend, it just seems that they would not lie and say he did it if in fact he did not... IMO

I would like to know what happened to the days when Freedom was earned and not BOUGHT! The focus of the case and the horrible crime that occured has kinda turned into what a good defense lawyer Pamela mackey is....
Like I said freedom should be earned and Not bought.... Period.....

Linn   March 27th, 2009 9:03 pm ET

Jean Casarez keeps asking why Luke's dad hasn't come forward. It's my understanding that he is dead, too. I feel so terrible for the families of these three victims, but BC is being framed. I hope that the cops get their act together and find out who really did this so those families can finally get some peace and closure.

amanda lynn   March 28th, 2009 1:02 am ET

i am better sure they would remember a night where someone they know killed 3 young people ! thats not exactly something that slips your mind. i think it is very obvious that craig is guilty. the 3 witnesses are no longer friends and the fact that they all pointed ot him makes it very clear. i definitely feel the witnesses are shady, and that they should have come forward sooner. but the truth is they would have been in BIG trouble if they came forward when all this happened.
lets just let the truth reveal itself & get justice for these adorable young boys.

Miriam   March 29th, 2009 4:51 pm ET

There is more to this story than the drug induced addicts are coming up with. I say this based on all the testimony that I have heard so far. There is no way to tell who can be trusted as "eye witnesses". Somebody knows......

donna raider   March 30th, 2009 11:44 am ET

Believing any of these witnesses on any day of the week would be next to impossible. So I would not and do not believe them now. If Craig is guilty then they have their own self's to blame for being too scared to come forward 10 years ago and tell the truth. So weather I right or wrong I really don't know, but I can't see sending a man to jail for years on the account of three people that were on drugs this faithful night and then coming forward ten years later saying he did it, he did it. And who ever gave them the chance to come forward and have their sentences reduced if they would talk then shame on them. Any criminal would like this deal. And as we have seen, the criminals took the deal. So as I've already stated, how possible of them being believed? Next!

Rico   March 30th, 2009 12:36 pm ET

Really after all that has been said in this trial, considering the testimonies. even the contradictory information, it is pretty easy, GUILTY! No wait ,the other three are conspiring against poor BC! That just doesn't make sense. They tried all these the years to cover their own butts, including the killers BC. BC is the wacked out intimidator who scared his friends by his own cold blooded actions into believing they would get theirs if they ratted him out. Even coming forward today probably scares them. BC better get convicted otherwise there may be another triple murder down the line, this time,of the witnesses.BC is a scary psycho, never let him on the streets again.

Angela   March 30th, 2009 2:33 pm ET

I am so confused by something. These 3 'eye-witnesses' say they were terrified and fearful for their lives if they came forward. Why now? They had to know that if they had come forward 10 years ago that BC would've been charged at that time. Then their testimonies would be more believable. They're having to testify against him now. What difference does it make if they testify now or had testified against him 10 years ago. I believe had they done so years ago, BC would've been convicted....hands down! Now, I just don't know. Who do we believe and why should we? If BC is convicted, it is my opinion that all that were involved should be convicted as well. In addition, I am sure that if BC is convicted, the 3 'eye-witnesses' will receive the reward money. What a shame. The monies should be given to the victim's families.

John Lennon   March 30th, 2009 5:20 pm ET

Jeff Moore is just another drug addict liar just like the other two. The only difference is he added his little cough to it !! He tried to act smart but that`s about all, ACTED. If he wasn`t getting a deal of some kind, he wouldn`t be saying what he did. Someone fed him that story and that`s what he testified to. He and the other two addicts will screw up and get theirs in the end.

marianne   March 30th, 2009 9:08 pm ET

I can understand why the three came forward now instead of when it happened. If you were living in a drug induced world it would be much easier to let it go then if you were not. Don't want to cause any waves, needs their drugs and can't mess this up so keep quiet. When the killing begins to haunt them , they just do more drugs to cope. Life goes on in the drug induced world and things are kept quiet. That is until its time to pull the trump card. Which is what happened in this case. I think Brandon is guilty as sin. He sits there so smug thinking he won't be conficted. Surprise, I hope he is.

Doris H   March 31st, 2009 3:56 am ET

Angela did you not hear the witnesses say they were not going to make a claim on the money? I agree with Rico and Tracy and Amanda Lynn. Luke Morris's dad is not dead he is very much alive and threatning people. He has a lot of legal issues himself. So for all of you that feel so sorry for poor BC as Rico says do your homework.

Keith   March 31st, 2009 12:02 pm ET

It is easy to sit and judge while watching tv and hearing all facts either pertinent or not. I had to unfortunate duty to sit on a jury for a young man who was convicted for murdering his girlfriend. It was something similar to this case...years after, eyewitnesses who had rather dark past's, but we as a jury convicted on what we heard in the cvourtroom. Six years later, the verdict was overturned due to inadequate crime scene evidence and dna. I now live every day thinking that I had condemned that young man to the rest of his life in jail and althogh justice was finally brought forth; it still bothers me what I had actually done to him.

Doris H   March 31st, 2009 4:44 pm ET

Marianne finally a voice of reason.

Sherry S.   March 31st, 2009 9:30 pm ET

I don't think that Luke Morris' dad is deceased as Linn said. I understood that he was arrested coming from Mexico with 1,000 lbs of weed. It was also brought up that Linda Mercer is still Rick Morris' girlfriend which says that he's still alive .. just serving time.

Elida   April 1st, 2009 12:56 am ET

I have been following the trial, BC is guilty and the other 3 should pay also for the crime. They waited too long to come forth. they were there with BC, They should pay for what BC did. They didn't try to stop BC.
