Socks the cat

Posted: 08:08 AM ET

NEW YORK–Socks is dead - as in, Socks the cat. You probably heard the news last week. But for me, it is just sinking in. Socks was Chelsea Clinton's cat and though not the first to live in the White House, Socks was no doubt the most famous presidential cat ever.

So what can you say about a cat? Well a whole lot, actually. You see, I knew Socks.

I took this photo with Socks in the White House back in 1994. That was fifteen years ago. So Socks lived a good long time. He was about 18 years old when he died. And while he was the presidential cat, Socks was a companion to Chelsea, an only child, which is a lonely thing to be in the White House.  Watch Jami Floyd's comments on Socks the cat.

He also became a symbol of privacy versus media in the Clinton era when photographers got a little aggressive as he took a walk on the White House lawn. Socks even inspired a fan club and his own Wikipedia page.

Towards the end of the Clinton era however, Bill got a new puppy and the tuxedo cat (as his breed is called) took it hard. Socks waged war and by most accounts, Socks won the war. But, when the Clintons left the White House, Socks went to live with Bill Clinton's secretary and longtime Clinton friend, Betty Currie, as Chelsea went off to college.

Many people criticized the Clintons for letting their cat go. But those of us who knew Socks knew that cat loved Betty. I saw him more than once curled up on the blue chair, right next to Betty, outside the Oval.

To staffers, Socks was more like a dog than a cat, taking on Buddy, taking walks. Last week Betty took Socks for one last walk; and then he was put to sleep. Betty, Chelsea and the Clintons are lucky to have memories of their wonderful pet, as are we all.

as a cat hair covered old Lady, living with a herd partly made of tuxedo cats, you brought tears to my eyes. Cats do boss dogs, and go for walks, and make pretty darn good companions. Rest in peace, o first cat. Thank you, Jamie.

WHY IS THE NEWS MEDIA AFRAID TO ASK THIS QUESTION?
Why does America need to borrow money from China in order to expand the money supply? Article 1, Section 8, of the Constitution gives the Federal Government
the right to create new money. Goods and services have real value. Money should be
equal to the value of goods and services—not to a gold standard or anything else.

Thank you for such a wonderful goodbye to an historical and fascinating cat...."Socks: The White House Cat"!

He brought great joy to many Americans, and not all of them children....The First Lady now Sec. of State (yes!) Clinton wrote a book about him including many letters and questions for "Socks" from his devoted little fans. It was wonderful!

He lived a long and good life, and fought hard against an enemy of us all. God bless you in heaven, little Socks, an American cat!~~~

Everyone loves their pet,so when one passes away it is like losing a family member–even recently actor Mickey Rourke spoke about how his dog saved his life & was his best friend-does anyone think when the Obama's get a dog the novelty will wear off ?? do you think the President will be strict with his daughters having to walk and take care of it ?? Just curios to hear everyones opinion

I thought you speaking out about Socks was wonderful! I am a cat lover myself and too many folks just see them as an animal, a pet...but they are so much more...they are family members. Thanks for showing the world that even our 4 legged friends are not forgotten when they pass.

Now that Socks is gone, what can we as Americans do to honor his contibutions to Society. I think the Flag over the Capital should have been brought to half-staff for a week of National Mourning. The Senate could pass a law that we have "Socks History Month". When people can reflect on what Socks meant to them. We could even get a National Holiday for his birthday!!
With our Governments ability to spend money, I'm sure it won't be long before there is a statue of Socks lying by Lincolns Feet!!

Cats and dogs are part of the family, apparently the Clintons don't think so. If they tried every thing (including a professional behaviorist) to get Buddy and Socks to live together peacefully...and all attempts failed, then back to the breeder Buddy goes. They had plenty of years left after Socks passed to do the dog thing. How disrespectful to the older cat to just give him away. BTW, I am not a crazy cat person, I am a dog person but sensitive to all. Also, I'm a fan of Bill Clinton .This comes from the heart...it's not about cats, dogs or Clintons.
Also, too many dog owners decide to get a puppy when their dog becomes a senior, This is really mean and disrespectable to the family dog, who has probably given you years of pleasure. You should at least give the old guy some peace and contentment in his later years. Rest in peace, Socks. Sorry you were discarded by your family.
