The prettiest Ronette

Posted: 02:13 PM ET

NEW YORK–Her name was Estelle Bennett, but I always knew her as the prettiest Ronette. The Ronettes were, by most accounts, the first mega-hit girl band. Estelle dated 1960s rock icons like George Harrison and Mick Jagger. Estelle, together with her sister Ronnie and their cousin Nedra, redefined femininity. And then they faded away.

But last year, a new generation learned all about the Ronettes during the Phil Spector murder trial. Spector was accused of murdering actress Lana Clarkson. His trial ended with a hung jury and a second trial is underway right now in Los Angeles.

Estelle knew Phil Spector well. He made the Ronettes famous and famously married (and divorced) her sister Ronnie. But Estelle will never know the outcome of his case. She died earlier this month at the age of 67.

I was born a year after the Ronettes hit the charts; but they became part of my early consciousness as strong women, who were beautiful too - and because they shared what was then an unusual racial mix: Black, American Indian and Anglo, just like me. They made it okay to be multiracial at a time when it really wasn't.

When Phil Spector took them to No. 2 on the charts with "Be My Baby," the Ronettes became instant stars. But even then, there were signs of trouble. Estelle struggled with anorexia and depression. And between the fairytale beginning and the premature end of life is a story of addiction, mental illness and even homelessness.

But for me Estelle Bennett will always be the prettiest Ronette.

Ms. Jami Floyd,

I was completely taken aback by your comments for Estelle Bennett. I have been a fan of The Ronettes since I was a young teen and I thought they were all beautiful. I still listen to their music today.

I hope that you will re-read your message about Estelle be the prettiest Ronette. That was the most cruel statement anyone could have made. They were all pretty.

I don't know if you have any brothers, sisters or cousins, but how would you feel if someone wrote in and made the statement that one of them or one of the other commentators on Court T.V was prettier than you.

Please be careful about what you say about people in general, as the feelings that get hurt next time may be yours. I think all people are beautiful in their own way, but to pick one out of group is so ugly.

In response to R.G. Lewis's comment:

I wonder why we tend to take things so seriously . . . Although in principal I agree with R.G. Lewis's sentiment as to how a careless statement can become hurtful – intentionally or not – I don't think this particular statement by any means reaches the cited level of "cruel," or "ugly", or even especially hurtful.
I feel that Ms. Floyd's description of Estelle Bennett was meant in an endearing, sentimental manner. Perhaps the use of quotation marks around "the prettiest Ronette" may help clarify the intended meaning – that of looking back with humor upon the child-like way she once distinguished who's who in the band, not to say she still feels that way now (or maybe she does- who knows?). I think we all used to do this to some extent – describing the members in our favorite bands or TV shows as "the pretty one" or "the short one" or "the brunette", etc. just in order that others knew which one (of a set) we were speaking about.
Try to take things at face value – no dig or insult to the other (yes, beautiful) band members was meant here! This is simply a brief recount of Estelle Bennett's life (and death) – sometimes inspiring, sometimes tragic – and how , even in a small way, her life has affected another's.

R.G. Lewis:
Please lighten up a bit. Jami said it was to her that Estelle was the prettiest. She wasn't saying the others were ugly. In fact, she said they were, as a group and individually, beautiful.

You said that what she said was one of the most cruel statements anyone could have made. Are you kidding me? If you've never heard anything worse than that you have led an extremely sheltered life.

Did you miss the part where she said the Ronettes made it okay to be multiracial, like Jami is? Do you suppose Jami has never had anyone say anything about appearance to her?

It's sad that you missed so much of the import of Jami's comment.

And she does have a right to her personal opinion, which is what blogs are all about.

They are all beautiful. I remember that song well.

I agree with you, R.G. Lewis. I was a little shocked by the superficial nature of the comment. For someone who seems to strive for equality for all – I found it shocking that Ms. Jami Floyd would be so vain in her "last words".. it was nice to pay tribute to Estelle Bennett but it could have been done in a more tasteful way.

When Jami started out her speech with "the prettiest Ronette" – my mouth just dropped.

VERY disappointing, Jami.. Such a vain and superficial statement.

I was sixteen and living in the UK when "Be My Baby" shot up the charts. Who can forget coming of age along with that great sound?

Thank you Ronettes for your music.

THE JUDGE IS SHOWING HIS FRUSTRATION WITH THE DEFENSE COUNSEL "POOR PREPERATION".
iI AGREE THEY'VE GIVEN "INADEQUATE DEFENSE"
THIS IS A CAPITAL MURDER CASE!! THE POOR KID NEEDS GOOD REPRESENTATION! (even though, he's running around with losers and doing drugs, and may have done it)

The Ronettes are forever going to be remembered for their wonderful music. Jami Floyd did not say anything wrong- she said how she felt. Please don't take away from the kind and true words said about a great female group. I still think John Lennon was the best looking Beatle – does that mean that the other three were ugly? Come on.

j. renee   February 27th, 2009 11:47 pm ET

I disagree with Jami alot.....not today. Come on, these are not little school girls, they're grown women. They did'nt slice their wrist because Estelle probably got more attention.
I haven't heard how the Spector trial is coming along, but I did watch the first one and I think he is as guilty as OJ Simpson.
Lana Clarkson had her purse on her shoulder to leave, with a driver right outside the door and the defense tries to say she killed herself...PLEEEEZ!!! She met Spector for the first time only hours before.

Let us know how the trial is coming along, Jami.

Phil Spector is, and always be innocent!
