Three branches of government

Posted: 03:32 PM ET

NEw YORK - President-elect Barack Obama and Vice President-elect Joe Biden will make a pre-inaugural visit to the United States Supreme Court this afternoon at the invitation of Chief Justice John Roberts.

U.S. Supreme Court

In fact, it is something of a tradition for incoming presidents and vice presidents to pay their respects to the High Court. Bill Clinton and his Vice President-elect, Al Gore, called on the court in December 1992, and Ronald Reagan and his Vice President-elect, George H. W. Bush, visited in November 1980.

It is worth noting, however, that George W. Bush has never made the trip. Perhaps Barack Obama knows what President Bush apparently does not - that ours is a constitutional system of government; that the president serves at the pleasure of the American public; that the rule of law applies to all Americans even our chief executive; and, that presidential powers do not give the president unlimited authority to undermine our Constitution. There are three branches of government, after all, and with good reason. The executive is just one of those.

With today’s visit our next President signals that he will fully respect the role of the other two - the legislative, with whom he must work everyday to best serve the American people, and the judiciary to which we all must answer.

Madoff should be charged with economical terrorism. 50 Billion definitely hurt are national financial system, which effects are national security

Wow. Because President Bush did not visit the Supreme Court he doesn’t respect the rule of law. I thought CNN was better than this. If you happen to reference some of his decision, I could understand your point of view. Is there a constitutional clause, inference or something saying should visit any other branch of government. He doesn’t even need to deliver the State of the Union in person. I guess Jami Floyd had a slow day and wanted to jump on the beat up Bush band wagon. I guess this is why I have CNN bookmarked under entertainment, not news.

Perhaps the sidebar should have noted that the three branches of government are to be co-equal; that the framers of the Constitution intended the Supreme Court to measure our laws against the Constitution rather than legislate from the bench.

There are three SEPARATE and EQUAL branches. The executive and the legislative don't ANSWER to the judicial. Sorry day if that ever happens since there are a limited number of justices on the Supreme Court. . I think that it is a disgrace that we have justices like Bill Rehnquist who should have resigned a long time ago instead of waiting until he died to resign. There should be an age limit as there are in some judiciaries; automatic retirement at 70 from the bench

How do I feel about Pres. Bush!! Let me say first, I respect him for his leadership of our Country, I think he made US a safe place to live during his term, I agree there were mistakes made, but, I do not believe there is one person in the US that can assure us there will be NO mistakes made during the Obama reign, As I write this comment (which I doubt will get printed) I feel certain, there are going to be so many more racial conflicts, the scene was set during his campaign with all the confusion about his selected parties, I pray I am wrong for our Country needs a healthy healing, but, Obama is going to be the wrong one to be in there for this needed healing. It is now 1:10pm, January 20, 2009 . CNN should be careful to get the "FACTS" straight. Your "FACTS" at the bottom of our screen calls President Barack Obama-Mr. Obama, and calls Former President Bush-President. I am sensitive about this. Many people are waiting to see how the media will treat our new president. You should have been prepared for the change in titles. PLEASE-GET YOUR FACTS STRAIGHT, OR LEAVE THEM OFF THE SCREEN!

I believe George Bush should 've made the visit to the SUpreme court , for 2 Simple reasons ; 1) He was directly invited by the Chief justice and 2) He broke tradition

Brad   February 4th, 2009 3:51 pm ET

Why is it "worth noting" W never visited the Supreme Court?

I agree with Qadir – W should've accepted the invitation and visited for tradition's sake.

The rest of the post is drivel one might expect to find on Daily Kos & Huffington Post.
