NEW YORK–Dr. Richard Sharpe, 54, known to In Session viewers as the “cross-dressing dermatologist,” was found hanged in his cell in a Massachusetts State Prison last night. Sharpe’s cellmate found him at 7:26 p.m.; Sharpe was pronounced dead at Norwood Hospital at 8:11 pm.

Richard Sharpe

In November 2001, Sharpe was convicted of the shotgun murder of his estranged wife, Karen Sharpe, in July 2000. He was sentenced to life without the possibility of parole and was serving his time in the Massachusetts Correctional Institute at Norfolk, a medium security prison south of Boston.

I observed Sharpe in the courtroom during his two-week murder trial, a high-profile case in the Boston area. He would flip his long hair as he tossed his head, grimace often and, for most of his testimony, address the jurors with his eyes closed.

Jurors heard that Sharpe and his wife, high school sweethearts who married in 1973, were in a contested custody and divorce battle after more than 25 years of marriage. Karen Sharpe alleged that her husband psychologically and physically abused her. She and their daughter would complain that Sharpe, prone to dressing in women’s clothes, would steal their underwear to wear himself. Karen Sharpe kept photos of her husband in dresses and fishnet stockings to use in her fight for custody of their children.

Dr. Sharpe had a successful dermatology practice in Gloucester, MA. At one time, he taught dermatology at Harvard Medical School. Despite his professional success, Sharpe had an alcohol and prescription drug problem and asserted an insanity defense at trial. Jurors rejected the defense and convicted him of first-degree murder

Massachusetts prison spokeswoman Diane Wiffin says the Norfolk County District Attorney’s Office has been notified and that his death is under investigation.

What a creepy looking guy. Rick’s right…he saved taxpayers tons of money. Too bad the rest of the criminals don’t do the same. What a piece of garbage he was.

ambriel sherrod   January 6th, 2009 3:58 pm ET

peroque   January 6th, 2009 4:04 pm ET

Now, if only Casey Anthony would do that the world would be a better place!!

Jane   January 6th, 2009 4:05 pm ET

ambriel…what’s a “shame” and “real sad?” That he killed his wife? That he destroyed two families? That his children were left without a mother AND father? To have empathy or sympathy for a worthless, useless creep like this is disgusting. And he’ll NEVER get to heaven, unless they’re now opening it up to murdering monsters.

Hunni   January 6th, 2009 4:14 pm ET

tragic……… but uuhh Ambriel Sherrod the context of ur comment was nice, but imma need 4 u to learn how to spell ‘heaven’ and ‘peace’ babygirl

Jay Reis   January 6th, 2009 4:29 pm ET

He’s standing in front of the Lord and his murdered wife right now, answering for his crime. If he truly repented to God before he took his own life, then the only sin he has to answer for is his own murder. If he didn’t, then he has two great sins to answer for. Whichever, I am glad he is gone from this earth. That’s as it should be.

E   January 6th, 2009 4:53 pm ET

As sad as it maybe thats what happens. As for going to heaven there is a place for him but it is isnt paved with streets of Gold. Good to know we were spared the millions we would spend on his pathetic soul…..

Deborah   January 6th, 2009 5:29 pm ET

looks like Richard Rameriez

JT   January 6th, 2009 5:51 pm ET

Ambriel, that’s a sweet innocent thought, but murderers don’t go to heaven. Who’d want to be there with them?

This guy had some loose hinges. What I really wonder about is a woman who’d stay with him for so many years knowing how weird he was???? Couldn’t have been that lucrative dermatology practice…right????

Scary character.

I just feel sorry for the daughter left all alone in this without a mother or a father and with a terrible legacy

ahunter   January 7th, 2009 10:19 am ET

I really hope the kids are mentally okay. To go through something like this is terrible.

JoNell   January 7th, 2009 10:28 am ET

Wish he would have offed himself BEFORE he took the life of
his wife!!!

Tae helper's helper   January 7th, 2009 3:14 pm ET

Third times the charm It’s “Reap what you sow” LOL

Sandy   January 7th, 2009 5:39 pm ET

Definately looks like a transsexual to me! Shady looking character. As for Ambriel’s comments I am no one to judge, but in the ten commandment’s it clearly says “thou shall not kill” and unless he repented he’ll be answering to a higher authority.

Mims   January 7th, 2009 9:30 pm ET

Good one Tae helper’s helper. What a creepy looking guy? His kids are now orphans. How sad.

betsy,tx   January 8th, 2009 6:42 pm ET

It’s sad that so many professional people , rich with money become so greedy and selfish. Very strange person???

NYPrincessTt   January 9th, 2009 12:12 pm ET

Herbie and CHERI- I would like to add to your ‘Wow’ and ‘DOUBLE WOW’ a big old Flavor Flav ‘WOOOOOOOOOWWWWWWW’.
Hunni- your message to Ambriel Sherrod- PRICELESS!! I haven’t laughed that hard in a long time. You are a funny, funny person.

zelda   January 9th, 2009 10:31 pm ET

another nut has bit the dust.
Seems dead wives are at a premium now days.
what a mess for the kids.
The power of one quasi-human being to ruin the lives of many is scary.
But the power of one person doing good is moreso………….yup it is.
Can’t say I am sorry this guy killed himself…………..what a weirdo.
And the beat goes on…………..

zelda   January 9th, 2009 10:34 pm ET

I am afraid I didn’t say what I meant to say in my previous comment…I didn’t mean that doing good is scary……………what I meant to say is that it is more powerful!
Sorry…………….
