Top moment of 2008

Posted: 03:11 PM ET

NEW YORK–We covered a lot of cases on our network in 2008, from exonerations to gay marriage. And while Osama Bin Laden's driver was tried by the first Military Commission at Gitmo and the U.S. Supreme Court handed down decisions on lethal injection, the right bear arms and even presidential powers, the biggest legal story of the year, at least for most Americans, was probably O.J. That's right O.J. Simpson, back in court, back on trial and now going to jail.

O.J. Simpson

He was convicted 13 years to the day of his acquittal on double murder charges. The families of Nicole Brown Simpson and especially that of Ronald Goldman have been pursuing Simpson ever since. And so have we, in the public. Difficult for us to let it go. To accept that the state of California didn't make its case, but the state of Nevada did. And now, America finally has what it has wanted from all these years.

But while we pursued O.J. with a passion, our own civil rights have been undermined by our government. We've invested billions in two wars overseas and we've allowed Wall Street executives to get away with, well not murder, but at least a whole lot of looting of Wall Street.

That's why I think we've finally come full circle in the O.J. Simpson saga. With a new president in a time of crisis, I predict in 2009, Americans will care more about the bigger issues that will affect our children and their children for decades to come.

And that's the last word of 2008.

I believe the biggest moment of 2009 will be when either Blago, Rezko, Harris, JJ Jr. or some yet un-named person rolls over on the Chicago Machine.

Could be as big as watergate... well... not that big I'm sure... but a heck of a story none the less.

Happy Holidays Jami... and a happy new year as well.

Jamie,

Thank you for bringing perspective into this crazy world we live in. A BIG YIPPEE for Obama winning the White House. Most of all thank you to everyone on Tru Tv. All of you made 2008 a year worth watching.

txkboy   December 20th, 2008 10:50 am ET

Ah, Jami, you tied in the whole year with your massiah, Obama. Four years from now, you'll be screaming that how dare, Hillary, led him astray. I know, once again, that you just couldn't help yourself, to let your political views stream freely in the 'In Session' column. Does your editor catch on or care? I find it funny that you and Beth have been writing on the Caylee Anthony story and then, when the remains are positively identified, you have nothing to say and turn it over to page 1. Surprise. I guess there is no legal issues to discuss regarding that case. Sincerely though, here's wishing you and your families a Merry Christmas and happy holidays.

Concerned   December 21st, 2008 4:21 pm ET

I have one thing to say: Not ONE adult in that household called to report a missing child, not one. Makes you wonder and think why not huh??? I'm waiting for the arrest of the grandparent or grandparents......Common sense tells you they know something as NONE of them called Caylee missing until Casey struck again by stealing money from a friend bringing more attention to herself or else that family would've kept covering up the crime by not saying a damn thing.

suzan   December 21st, 2008 6:30 pm ET

aloha- i think the best trail cases in 2008 was o.j. simpson arm robbery trail. that was the best case for 08 o tru-tv. so in 09 will there be a new trail cases? i hate to see the same old case on tv all the time here in portland, oregon.

Almon Atkins   December 21st, 2008 7:55 pm ET

The biggest thing that could happen in 2009 is for Court TV to dismiss you. I am glad for now that you are on at noon. I can shut court TV off to eat and not miss anything.

Jaime   December 23rd, 2008 8:41 am ET

Jamie..in response 2 'dismiss u' comment in 2009..(Almon Atkins 12/21) , I LOOK FWD 2 your segment/comments each day..especially 'he said' etc..sorry you're on ONLY 1-3..thank you 4 the insightful challenges given 2 all of us..wish you and my lunch would last longer..smile!!!

tomkat   December 23rd, 2008 9:04 am ET

Amen Almon! The good news for the legal community as a whole is that Jami is not out there defending anyone. Her show versus active court attorney is the lessor of two evils!

Liz   December 23rd, 2008 10:04 am ET

Jamie,

The BEST part of 2009 is all of the people who produce, write, edit, and report for Court TV. I so look forward to sharing my day with you and your co-workers. Each of you brings your own perspecitve to court cases that otherwise would go unoticed. Thank you for sharing your time, wit and talent with the rest of us. MOST of us appreciate your work. Have a blessed and happy new year. The BEST part of 2009 will be enjoying the swearing in of our President-elect Barack Obama.

I'm very confused as I was following the Terry Hough murder trial and poof no word about it. anybody know whats going on? this web site for crimes and trials has nothing on it about the trials going on like it used to

Toni Cotttle   December 26th, 2008 8:13 pm ET

Could someone please tell me what has happened to my favorite
anchors these last few weeks? all of our court , trial, and legal programs from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00p.m. weekdays on Court TV now known as Tru TV have not been on?? PLEASE tell me that they are still on and have not been replaced with all these other shows,, Phil Spector is being retried as speak and I can not find my favorite anchors covering the trial much less any updates. It would be horrible if they are no longer on Tru T.V. Thankyou

anouther mass murder resulting from divorce :( so sad, I used to here about these & wonder how could they ? but now that I have ben through it & have seen how fathers are treated in this country I now understand ! I still think it's wrong but how long are we going to let the courts destroy the lives of the working men in the USA ! this is our countries greatest internal problem ! a friend of mine is a guard in the local county jail & told me that 1/2 to 3/4 of the inmates are people who lost there jobs & cant pay the child support, putting them in jail realy helps get that paid ! the system in the USA for family court is designed to completely drain everyone of there $ and make the lawyers get rich ! the courts have no regard for the best interest of the children ! none at all ! my case is prime example of that ! I contacted other lawyers, the govenor , mayor & everyone I could think of and was continualy told that until my x kills one of my children no one will do anything even DFS told me that but I refused to believe it ! now it has ben proven to me by DFS & our courts that this is true ! I have quit voting, burned all my American Flags & Americana stuff ! Whats next ??? it is now a discrace to me to be a American ! our courts only protect the guilty & do everything they can to destroy the family's involved ! our courts are destroying everything that once made this a great country ! Family ! Industry ! Farming ! the firearms & tabbacco industries are prime examples of that ! will it ever stop ? very doubtfull untill there is a complete colapse of the Goverment & the court system ! these people always asking what is a matter with this world ? my answer to them is look in the mirror & try to understand the Bible !

To the morons that have a problem with Jami erring on the side of the defense, try watching another show rather than one entitled "The Best Defense!" If you're not going to side with the defense, watch something else!

Lori   December 28th, 2008 11:13 am ET

@txkboy: First of all, it's "messiah," not massiah. Secondly, Jami never called him that, or even inferred it, those are your words alone. Lastly, Jami's "Final Word" on InSession is considered an editorial piece and she is entitled to say whatever she likes. That's the nature OF an editorial. Perhaps you don't know enough about journalism to understand that, nonetheless, there's no need to be sarcastic or rude to Ms. Floyd simple because you don't like our president elect.

Oh, and thanks for the wonderful year on TruTV's BEST segments, Jami. Looking forward to 2009. I hope you and your family have a marvelous holiday season.

How is it that America finally has what it wanted?

Did we want criminals to be put in jail for crimes they've committed? Then I agree with you, Jami.

However. are you implying that O.J. is now serving time for the murders, many say he committed, 13 years ago and everyone should be happy?
Then you're terribly wrong.
Anyone who felt that O.J. got away with murder can not be satisfied with this conviction as payback. If you felt he was guilty of the murders then you wanted death or at least life in prison, back then. Less than 20 years for robbery, kidnap and conspiracy does not even begin to serve as retribution for a double homicide. That's if you're someone who felt he was acquitted for a murder he orchestrated.
Now, if you're like me, and you just want the legal system to punish our criminals, get them off the street and, hopefully, rehabilitate them into productive citizens, then this is something you've wanted.

james   December 29th, 2008 1:18 pm ET

wow oj got his and one to go ,phil spector youre next? cleaning up the streets?????

Miss trial   December 29th, 2008 3:32 pm ET

Top Moment of 2008= Simpson stays in jail.
Thank you, Vegas courts, for not letting Simpson get away with yet another crime. At least he finally is put away for these 12 counts; no star leniency, no dream team this time. Since I never cared for professional sports I didn't get caught up with his sports-related status. He's abusive and he's a liar, and the years of stealing and bullying show the criminal-thinking mindset he likely always had.
He put himself in jail –because he just couldn't stop being who he tried to hide under that smirk he always had for the camera.
I doubt they have a golf course.

carol   December 30th, 2008 1:01 pm ET

what has happened to In Session Court TV? will it be on another channel?

John Lennon   December 31st, 2008 7:58 pm ET

All i can say about Simpson 13 years ago is, why did they spend millions of dollars on attorneys or have a jury or even spend 10 months in court when they could have had all of you to decide what happened 13 years ago? I`m not defending O.J. by no means but everyone acts like they were right there and saw him commit the murders!!!! All it is, one person says he did and the rest just THINK SO TOO!!! There`s only one problem, you have no proof!!!

Teresa   January 1st, 2009 3:36 am ET

Sorry, this may not be the place to make my comment, but I am confused.
This is about the Matt Dillon, driving 160 miles an hour. Way too fast as far an I am concerned.
The storey reads that he is 44, how is that possible. When I wan 10, he was almost 20, how does that make him 3 years older than I. The math does not add up.
I am so glad that these Hollywood so called untouchables are finaly being held accountable for their actions, but I just wish they would not tell lies about their ages.
Either way they are still idiots. Glad that finally someone else is realising that.
Also, O.J.'s trial was not the trial of 2008. You just want it to be.

Floyd Middleton   January 2nd, 2009 2:34 pm ET

Why is In Session not on TV now? It is on TruTV's schedule, but not on.

Latenitelisa   January 3rd, 2009 6:53 am ET

I'm joining in on this for the first time. I MUST tell you I agree with much of what Spyder posted. It is time to be tough on crime and Keep the bad guys where the only ones they can hurt are themselves or each other.

Regarding the O.J. case, his fame was on a downard spiral long before the Nicole Simpson murders took place. That man is an animal. If he had nothing to hide, why would he have tried to flee to Mexico with a lot of cash in his pocket?

Since that snake slid right out of 2 first degree murder charges, he thought he'd be able to slip out of this years charges as well. I'm glad he didn't. I hope he screws up in jail and is forced to have a longer sentence. I also hope they find new evidence or a witness that can prove him guilty of murder.

John Lennon   January 4th, 2009 5:38 pm ET

In Session is supposed to restart Jan.5th 09. Lisa,Jamie, and Ashley announced it back in dec.

ELAINE BARBAN   January 5th, 2009 1:36 am ET

PULLEEZEE......WHAT IS HAPPENING TO YOUR SHOW.....AND.....WHAT IS HAPPENING TO PHIL SPECTOR??????? I HAVE WATCHED YOUR SHOW FOR YEARS,THEN ONE DAY, POOF, IT IS GONE. CAN ANYONE TELL ME WHAT IS GOING ON???????

carol   January 5th, 2009 3:58 am ET

where is In Session? Have you changed channels?

jane   January 5th, 2009 12:33 pm ET

Why do you not show trials all the time? I don't watch the other shows.
I can watch stuff like that on other channels. I would like to to watch
even a repeat trial better than those shows.

Shayleen   January 5th, 2009 2:04 pm ET

I've waited all year for the second Phil Spector trial and tru tv has left me hanging. I'm very disappointed!

Shayleen   January 5th, 2009 7:06 pm ET

What? Not allowed to say say how repulsive Tanya Harding is?

Miriam   January 7th, 2009 10:48 am ET

Ok so if OJ did not kill Nicole and Ron then will someone please say who did.......is the case a cold case that was not reopened for investigation? Why has the case not been solved? The killer is out there somewhere isn't he/she (I want to be politically correct). The case needs to be solved and put to rest. So what steps need to be taken to get them to do that??????

As far as the Ill gov, has he been indicted yet or just charged? Sounds like he made the wrong "good ole boy" mad!!!!!!

Sheila   January 7th, 2009 2:57 pm ET

I would like to think that the Obama being the newly elected president of the US would be a much larger moment than OJ!
