Déjà vu all over again

Posted: 02:04 PM ET

NEW YORK–It’s déjà vu all over again. When a child goes missing, or even a grown woman, we immediately jump to conclusions about who killed her and why. But our conclusions aren't always right.

Remember the runaway bride. When she disappeared on the eve of her wedding, her poor groom was all but convicted of her murder. Of course, she turned up a few days later. Just a case of cold feet.

Same with JonBenet Ramsey. For years we hounded her family. Blamed her mother, blamed her father, even blamed her 12-year-old brother. Then, 10 years later, we latched onto another suspect, a man named John Mark Karr who took the media on a wild ride of suspicion before prosecutors cleared him of the crime.

When congressional intern Chandra Levy went missing in 2001, we all but convicted Congressman Gary Condit. He admitted to the affair but maintained his innocence, even after her body was found. Condit slapped some of us with big fat lawsuits and the most culpable were made to pay. But Condit's career was ruined.

The latest firestorm? Caylee Anthony. The toddler disappeared last summer and we all pray she will be found alive. But even if she isn't, let's not jump to conclusions all over again. Instead let's wait for all the evidence to come in and for the jury to decide.

I pray that little girl is alive somewhere. But it seems unlikely. Her mother is the last person to have seen her–and she knows the truth and isn't talking. So it's easy to point fingers at a woman like that. She's lied and deceived from the start of the investigation to the police and her own parents. What are other people supposed to think? This is her own daughter!!! The fact remains that most people are killed by someone who is close to them–whether it's a family member or friend. That is why people jump to conclusions before hearing all the details–I have done it myself.

Steve   December 11th, 2008 5:14 pm ET

Give me a break Jamie....... Your a smart person?? Have you not read the transcipts released by the DA where Casey Anthony continually lies to investigators about the person who supposively took her......and where she worked. She lied every step of the way to investigators.....and kept getting caught. Finally admitting to them that she has lied about everything she stated........except saying...she didnt kill her daughter.
I think I speak for all parents when I say if our child was missing for more than 30 SECONDS.....NOT 30 DAYS....we would be frantic and helping in anyway possible...truthfully. Not partying it up for that time saying "i was too afraid" Please!!!!

Jessica Gerald   December 11th, 2008 5:26 pm ET

I'm just saying people are already thinking that it's the little girl, but has anyone think maybe it's another child to any people are getting there hopes up to fast. Don't get me wrong I hope it's her too so she can rest at peace and when i turn on the t.v. this casey story is over. I wish I can talk to her, because they need someone thats going to keep it real with her and not play games. I hope the girl is alive and if this is her at least god has another little angel with him. Plus so many people say casey should die for this and maybe she should, but in the courts going to play god too. I don't think just because someone took another life that we should do the same thing. MAKE HER TAKE A TAKE TO SEE IF SHE'S TELLING THE TRUTH?? NOW YOU TELLING ME THAT THE COURTS CAN MAKE SOMEONE DO WHAT OUR WANT BUT YOU CAN'T SIT SOMEONE DOWN AND TAKE A TAKE? I know people see that killing her isn't going to solve anything i say make her sit in jail for her life and make her realize what she's done. The girl needs a friend if you ask me so im not saying that im that person, but what else can our do to her that our haven't done already?????

Kayla   December 11th, 2008 5:55 pm ET

In some cases I agree, but this is a case where CASEY ANTHONY is DEFINITELY GUILTY of MURDERING her BABY

Marie   December 11th, 2008 7:53 pm ET

Jami Floyd has obviously not following the case of Caylee Anthony. It is so obvoious that her mother is the cause of her disappearance and now porbably her demise. Case in point look at Susan Smith. She pretended to cry with dry eyes for a while before they found her precious boys straped to their car seats in her car under water. If my child was missing I would be begging for someone to help me find her. The police would have to bar me from the station. AND my eyes would only be dry after I ran out of tears. What is wrong with our world that we dispose of people when they get in our way?

SilverCygnet   December 11th, 2008 9:14 pm ET

Jamie, I watch your show and admire your work a great deal. You mentioned several "for instances" in your post that I would like to respond to.

You mentioned the runaway bride, JonBenet Ramsey and Chandra Levy; and asked that no one jump to conclusions regarding the Caylee Anthony case.

As I recall, there was no evidence in the runaway bride case that would indicate a death had occurred; not so with the forensic evidence in the Caylee Anthony case.

Very sadly, JonBenet Ramsey was murdered in her Colorado home. Good or bad, statistics show that most victims know their killer; and many times it proves to be a family member. While this case remains unsolved; it appears that JonBenet’s immediate family members have been rightfully excluded as suspects.

Gary Condit was definitely under the microscope in Chandra Levy's disappearance; I believe that it was the fateful events of 9-11 that sent this case to the back burner of news coverage. As I recall, there was no forensic evidence tying Condit to Levy's murder.

In summary, I agree with you; we should not jump to conclusions and under the constitution one is considered innocent until proven guilty. That said, I also believe there are significant differences in the forensic evidence found in the Caylee Anthony disappearance/murder vs. the other cases you mentioned.

Louise   December 11th, 2008 9:19 pm ET

If today's discovery of baby remains are Caylee's we have more than enough evidence to jump to some kind of conclusion. Who else would have done it for god's sake??? Casey has mislead the police officers, FBI, her parents, her boyfriend, her brother et al.... Does that sound like an innocent person that just happened to have had her daugher taken. If there was any person that was of a suspicious nature, Casey would have come up with that as a story by now. She is now without a deal to be made with the prosecutors. She used up all her chances and the fact that this baby has duct tape on the face, proves premeditated murder. = dealth penalty, just you wait and see.

jessica rainey   December 11th, 2008 9:21 pm ET

This is a sad incident and lets just pray that the remains that was found is not poor little Caylee. I just cant understand why anyone could want to hurt anyone let alone a little child. This is just one of those things that you listen to and just wish it would go away and have never occured. If Cindy is reading this I just want you to know you are in my prayers at night and I hope we all kind find some peace in this. It just hurts my heart to hear such horrid stories like this.

Vikki   December 12th, 2008 1:21 am ET

I know time will tell whether this is Carley. My thought's are "Probably!' the remains were discovered only 3/10th of a mile from the Anthonys home. There is So Much evidence against Casey, and most of it came from Casey herself , with her lies she couldn't keep straight and miss information to the Sheriff's office.Myself , if my daughter was missing for ANY amount of time I'd have been in such a state ! I'd have a breakdown and be screaming at the top of my lungs for help to find her, to everyone. So How did she hold it together for 31 days. Untill her parents questioned her, more or less?

Vikki   December 12th, 2008 1:31 am ET

What concerns me now is if this does turn out to be Casey, how will the Grandparents handle it. Live in denial or fall Totally apart ? They have gone from being Convinced there was a dead body in the trunk, (remember now- George testified to grand jury these faxs from his past experiance as a police officer. )And now gone full circle on the Larry King Show, to possibly having to go full circle again. Their reality if this happens will be Hell. And such an emotion Gauntlet. May they take whatever truth and survive through it.

Mane`   December 12th, 2008 7:13 am ET

well, i think that casey did kill her daughter. it either happened accidentally and she was too scared to let anyone know, or she has some mental problem. the thing is that no matter how much we want the little girl to be alive and well, that skull is most probably, hers, lets face it. and if it is the woman should be in cusody. this is all very sad, but the worst is that things like this happen so often that no one any longer gets surprised or shocked.

Spider   December 12th, 2008 11:19 am ET

déjà vu all over again.

Good line, Jami. But...somehow...it seems...I've heard it before...somewhere...

As a journalist, Jami, you are one of the last ones that can complain about rushing to conclusions. It's because of the main stream media that we, the citizenry, are making decisions prior to hearing all the evidence. Not too many years ago, it was the duty of a journalist to present the news and only the news. Now we are inundated with purely opinion programs, where the so-called journalist espouses his or her view on the "facts". New age journalism is the reason why the idea of "innocent until proven guilty" has gone by the wayside.

Vikki Chavez   December 12th, 2008 12:52 pm ET

I have been watching the show this morning about Caylee Anthony,

There is a very important point that EVERYONE seems to be missing, Scott Peterson was mentioned this moring in regards to the death penalty, this is taking place in Florida. Floridians are sick and tired of children being miss treated, this is not to say that other states are not sick of it as well, but in Florida if you will look at past cases death seems to be the standard. Scott Peterson was very lucky he commited the crime in California and not Florida.

Please take into account the locale when reporting what might happen or how the courts will rule.

Thank you

Vikki

Su   December 12th, 2008 12:56 pm ET

Jami, you want all of US (the viewers) to wait until the evidence is in, and the jury makes a decision before WE go jumping to conclusions. You can't compare this case to those that you mentioned. Casey Anthony has been her own worst enemy. SHE is the one who led police on wild goose chases, told one lie after the next, NEVER reported her daughter missing. It wasn't until her mother confronted her on the whereabouts of Caylee, that Casey even acknowledged that the child was missing! Talk about jumping to conclusions, what's up with the DREAM TEAM formation that took place overnight? The only ones missing from this newly formed ellaborate defense team are Scheck, Bailey, Kardashian, & Conchran! What makes people like LKB and Dr. Spitz jump on the bus in such quick fashion? I'll tell you what, they KNOW it's Caylees body, and she's NOT coming home!

mel   December 13th, 2008 12:29 pm ET

how is it that casey anthony could tell her parents for 2 years that she was taking their granddaughter to a nanny that they didn't know, not even where she lived, and oh yeah, that didn't exist, while she went to work at a job that she longer had??? seriously, i have 2 grandchildren that have been in center and in home daycares. i was on the emergenciy pickup list for all of them and had an address and phone number. i also visited each for pickups for some mom-mom time on many occasions. and worse, where and what was casey doing with caylee for those 2 years that she wasn't talikng her to the fantasy nanny whiel she didn't go to work. what was happening to caylee for all that time???

Temple   December 13th, 2008 3:07 pm ET

If this is her, lets all pray for the family left to grive. There is something terrible wrong when a young mother looses her love for a child. She should of been given the choice to let the child be adopted as she wanted. That Grandmother was to over barring and pushed her daughter to the end of her rope. Some people are not ment to parent and we need to reconize that as a society. I pray that this teaches parents that if there child does not want to have a child then they need to let that child be given up to a family that would love and cherrish it for life. There is no reason to keep her from the death penality if she did it. If someone takes a life then they should loose theres. Our society was built on that. God help everyone that struggles with having children. It is a choice not a forceable one.

june   December 13th, 2008 4:39 pm ET

Oh for god's sake give me a break,Casey sat in jail, whimpering to her parents about "I just want Caylee back,I just want to come home,I just want us to be a family again,"Initially,I have to admit I thought Cindy knew the real truth. Not george, but Cindy. And I thought she was preotecting Casey because she already lost Caylee. But,Cindy could NOT have lain in her bed at night..knowing Caylee was 50 yards away in a bag,My heart wrenches for George and Cindy and their family with the exception of their psychopath daughter.Every time they play that tape :"you are my sunshine.",.I have to leave the room.I cannot IMAGINE what it is doing to her family.I believe they are playing it over and over to taunt Casey..but the Anthony family ,except for Casey..does not deserve that.I don't know how Georg and Cindy and Lee are holding on.We all fell in love with Caylee. When I found out her face was taped...I puked...last..Casey better get down on her knees and thank god....I'm not on the Jury.

nancy   December 13th, 2008 11:00 pm ET

If you listen to some of the comments made by the mother she is heard speaking in "past tense" when referring to her daughter. Parents who legitimately have missing children never refer to their children in the past tense. That only tells me one thing...she knows more then what you think.

james   December 15th, 2008 11:27 am ET

thanks for your comments jami, spoken like the true liberal you are??

Carolyn Ford   December 15th, 2008 12:44 pm ET

The courts should get the Casey Anthonyy "conviction" over ASAP. I could just cry when I think of what her parents have, are and will go through over their daughters lies.

Christine Sullivan   December 15th, 2008 3:35 pm ET

I have been following the Caylee Anthony case for a few months now and the defense lawyers seem to be blowing smoke screens on any level. I believed this is a country of justice, but defense lawyers want all the glory even denegrading the police and forensic labs.

Deanne   December 15th, 2008 3:38 pm ET

The Anthony grandparents have been through too much already from their adult daughters actions and the loss of their beautiful granddaughter and it’s soo unfair that they now have to suffer unneccesarly because of vigilants that will not and cannot understand their uncomprehensible loss and suffering they already and will have tolive with for the rest of their lives The only thing they did was be blinded by unconditional love for their daughter and want to believe her, which is exactly what normal loving parents do sometimes, but I think they are slowly but surely coming to grips with the truth about their daughter. I just pray that our merciful Lord helps them through this most difficult and horrifying time and help others to be more understanding and merciful towards what they are going through as they are not the ones who I believe have not done anything wrong but love their adult, lying daughter.

Marria   December 15th, 2008 5:13 pm ET

How can you compare a 2-1/2 year old missing child with a runaway bride? Not only do I believe this so-called "mother" to be intrinsically involved with the disappearance and death of her child and i can't help but wonder how great a part the grandparents are responsible in this case as well. Casey was more interested in partying down than in searching for her child, has repeatedly lied & now when things are getting more than a little tight considers a plea of insanity if tried. To that I have several things to say: 1. How can a female, a mother, harm a child–let alone take the life of a child? 2. If this is indeed the child - no punishment on earth is sufficient. 3. What part did the grandparents play in covering for their own child, the probable murderer of their granddaughter? 4. Finally, Jesus alone will stand in true judgement of anyone who harms a child and woe be unto that person. There is no reason on earth or in the next life to harm a child!

Sarah R   December 15th, 2008 7:08 pm ET

I believe George and Cindy Anthony are living in an alternate reality- who do you think Casey learned it from? They are reaping what they sowed, and its hard to write this, but Caylee was spared from the same fate her mother fared, being unable to function in society.

Cheryl   December 16th, 2008 1:10 pm ET

I agree that the grandparents of little Caylee have been through too much. But, they have not cooperated completely, Cindy Anthony deliberatly given the wrong hairbrush to investigators. She also stated that she would give them the dogs toothbrush in place of Caylee's if she had to. I live in Florida, very close to Orlando and have been flooded with the daily coverage on this case. I hope that the remains found are not little Caylee, but these grandparents need to realize had they may be her and that they need to go to their daughter and start asking for some answers.

Christy   December 16th, 2008 2:53 pm ET

I really applaud all the hard work and coverage you all provide to us (the viewers). My concern, however, is with the Caylee Anthony case. There is so much media coverage and publicity surrounding this particular case, I just hope her defense team doesn't try to use that to their advantage and say that Casey will never be able to receive a fair trial because of that. It would be so sad for justice not to be served for that little girl, especially on technicalities. I do not believe anything Casey has said or even believe she deserves a fair trial, if indeed she did kill her daughter, but that is her constitutional right. (Even if I don't agree with it.)

Tina   December 16th, 2008 5:43 pm ET

So many people keep saying that they hope it is not her body. If it isn't then it is someone else's child. It is a child's body. You can pray it is not her but then it becomes someone else's baby. So I say pray for that child that has been found as a corpse no matter who it is.

Tina   December 17th, 2008 1:39 pm ET

Casey Anthony is heartless. Anybody who has watched this story unfold can see she is only concerned for herself. I have never seen her show any emotion for her baby daughter. This doesn't seem like a loving mother to me. If my child was missing, they would have to sedate me, I wouldn't be able to live, let alone go out and party like nothing is wrong. I feel so sorry for Caylee's grandparents. They have lost a granddaughter and their daughter. But, as far as not jumping to conclusions, the facts speak for themselves!

Renee   December 19th, 2008 10:12 am ET

I pray for the Anthony family. In this case I pray for all involved, including the investigators. I pray a special prayer for little Caylee. I think her mother's jealousy and being swayed into keeping the baby at such an immature age, has played itself out. Sad but true. I think Casey is a very angry individual, and without knowing the details of her family's dynamics I cannot go into judgement of her, except, I truly think the family may have seen this coming. I don't think a mother is capable of killing and possibly decapitating her own child without some kind of warning signs along the way. Denial and avoidance can cost a high price for everyone involved. I say all this waiting for the evidence and still hoping that the mother can be exonerated. I will not judge without hard core evidence since the media has portrayed her evil, (from her lies) from the beginning of all this and it very easily puts Casey at HIGH risk of a conspiracy. I don't always trust law enforcement's investigators team, and sure enough they may not have been trustworthy by not taking an extra leap of faith to check more thorough into the tips from August. I would never want to convict someone innocent and let the true killer stay free & go on to hurt someone else's innocent child. I believe in justice and evidence to prove it.

Jillydoll   December 19th, 2008 8:10 pm ET

Jamie I understand you are for the best defense. I believe everyone should have a good defense, but I also believe in justice. I think the grandparents should take on some of the guilt, they raised Casey, they knew she was a thief and a liar. She was their responsibility until she turned 18. They should have gotten that child some help early on and when she had a child they should have done more to protect that baby from a mother they knew could not be trusted. The way Casey lied I don't know why they didn't check up on her at work or at least check on who was taking care of the baby.

Joanne, Solvay, NY   January 5th, 2009 4:03 pm ET

Words on paper, Casey Anthony is a chronic , habitual liar...and her parents support her...what other conclusion can one reach with the evidence so far? Guilty!
