Police tape with confession introduced

Posted: 11:43 AM ET

BARTOW, Florida - More dramatic testimony expected today in the capital murder trial of Alejandro Ferrer. The State of Florida contends that Ferrer ambushed victim Colin Zieler in May of 2007, stabbing him over 40 times.

Aaron Zieler testified about finding his brother Colin's dead body

Prosecutors are playing the second interview Alejandro Ferrer gave authorities. In that version, the defendant admits that he is the person who killed Zieler, but insists that he acted only in self-defense. He also claims that his girlfriend, Heizel Gonzalez-Martinez, told him she had been raped by Zieler.

It’s also likely that we’ll hear from Dr. Stephen Nelson, who performed the autopsy on victim Colin Zieler.

The most dramatic witness to take the stand Wednesday was Aaron Zieler, the victim’s brother. He recalled being awakened in the early morning hours by a noise he believed was thunder or a lightning strike. But when he looked out the front door of the apartment the brothers shared, he saw a stranger covered with blood – a man he later identified as defendant Alejandro Ferrer.

Collin worked out regulary...he was a big fella. If there is any truth to Ferrers' story, and he was defending himself, what kept Collin coming at him? Any steroid use?

I think Ferrer was led by the nose by the girlfriend. She was motivated by the insurance policy for which she was the beneficiary. How she thought they wouldn't be charged with murder is beyond me. I really feel sorry for the decedent's family. His brother did very well on the stand.

Why do you have to stab someone 40 times to defend yourself? You can't tell me that he was still at threat up until the 39th stab!

debbie   October 30th, 2008 1:06 pm ET

Intentional murder is the only possibility here.Ferrer acts like he could care less about what is going on around him&totally lacking in remorse for what he's done.He appears callous.Selfish.I think ALL evidence should be allowed.

The motive...
for going to an apartment at 4am would clearly be to catch
an individual unarmed and unprepared for a surprise slaughter.

Cowards act in this manner.

By the way... the lame tale about getting bit by
a "big black dog"

Really?

Why not at least make the
lie believable, and say it was a
thirsty vampire
or perhaps a neophyte werewolf?

hmmmm! Not too difficult to figure out.

(Keep up the good work!)

Alot of people work out & remember here-there were only defensive wounds on this VICTIM.

Great show and trial. I was almost in shock when i saw what the judge did to this poor mother that couldn' t help but cry, a very natural reaction. I said to myself " SELF"-– there is something else going on here and guess what--–" THERE IS". She brought in bodygaurds and APPARRENTLY intimadated him for some reason and so he is lashing back. He only showed the public what he is made of, " not much" and he has lost the respect of me and I'm sure many otherviewers.

Julee   October 30th, 2008 1:45 pm ET

Since I was Colin's fiance and he was living with me at the time he died, I can assure you he wasn't on steroids. He wasn't a huge guy, he was 6'2 and weighed around 210lbs. He was tall and kinda lanky. As for the allegations of rape and violence with Heizel. That was a bunch of crap! In the year or more we were together the man never even raised his voice to me much less his hand. He was a sweet loving man and a wonderful father. I miss him dearly and kiss his picture every day. Thank you all for your thoughts, prayers and support. May justice be done . . .

I agree......forty stab wounds is not self-defense, but murder.

Dee Bristol   October 30th, 2008 1:50 pm ET

If there was a rape (and I'm highly sceptical about that) why didn't they call the police and let them handle it? Hmmmmmmm and if my ears heard correctly, a machete type knife – something calculated to do serious damage – I say hang him!!!!

Maria Pucko   October 30th, 2008 1:51 pm ET

Lizzie Borden could of used the same defense. I am sure that was self defense also.

kimberley zimmerman   October 30th, 2008 1:58 pm ET

Are you kidding me? what a set up! stabbed the guy 40 times_ and called self-defense!!! the girl friend seems involved, for sure!
but, even if not- the guy was stabbed 40 times-M_U_R_D_E_R!!!!!!!
thanks, kim

As the brother of the slain man testified yesterday, it was plain to see that he was hurting. Just look at his eyes, listen to his voice.........we raised our sons to be tough, don't cry and then this poor man is raked over the coals for not showing enough emotion. How can you judge what is in a persons heart? Shame on you for your shallowness.

The judge is probably protecting against a future mistrial because the jury was observing the victim's mother sobbing. Remember the Nelson Serrano's trial, the judge also warned the victims familie's not to cry or show any emotion in Court. We all know what pain something like this causes the families, but the lawmen are also trying to protect the law, again in case of future appeals, mistrials, etc. that would set the killers free.

Vixen   October 30th, 2008 3:05 pm ET

This was not murder, it was jealous OVERKILL that was brought on by the girlfriend! Although she did not inflict the deadly wounds herself, she somehow got the idiot new boyfriend to do it. Might as well put a bullring through his nose! Can't wait to see if he goes on the stand himself to try and 'explain' himself away.....right down to the needle being injected into him! Heartfelt thoughts and blessings to the victims family.

God bless you Julee

Catherine   October 31st, 2008 12:28 pm ET

I totally agree with Nancy from San Diego, Ca. Only an idiot could not see the pain in this young man's eyes as he testified. It is very clear how much he loved his brother. May God ease his and his family’s pain.

Ann Carter   November 3rd, 2008 2:30 pm ET

I just tuned in to this trial. I think it was coward for Ferrer to bring a knife to Zieler's home. He intended to kill this man. The woman involved was money hungry with the insurance policy that was taken out for her. People kill all the time for money and it's a shame that happens. Ferrer is guilty and need to be put to death. He does not deserve to rot in a jail cell. she got just what she deserved and I hope she never sets her eyes on a dime of the money. May she rot in jail, just where she belongs. Stabbing 42 times is not self defense, it's murder. I hope the justice system finds him guilty. May God have mercy on the families and children involved.
