In Tolerance

Posted: 09:10 AM ET

NEW YORK–So we know what Sarah Palin thinks of gay marriage. Sarah Palin is tolerant. Or at least she claims to be. Tolerant. And I guess that's better than intolerant. But is that the best we can do in this country? Because this election is three weeks away and I don't like what I'm seeing.

It’s getting ugly out there. With racism rearing it's ugly head and two Americas emerging: Those who are intolerant and the rest of us. There have always been those who are uncomfortable with change, afraid of those who are different. They opposed the abolition of slavery. They opposed civil rights. They opposed intermarriage and now they oppose gay marriage too.

But here's what they fail to understand. The greatness of this country has never been rooted in their intolerance. America is great precisely because we celebrate the differences that make the fabric of these United States stronger. And that's the Last Word.

Surprise, surprise. I disagree with Jami on this one.

This country came to be due to our forefather's intolerance of Great Britain's rule.

"With racism rearing it’s ugly head and two Americas emerging: Those who are intolerant and the rest of us."

So, that means you are tolerant of everything Jami? How tolerant are you of racism? How about if a defendant loses his right to a fair trial?
You are very intolerant of those things. In fact, you often create those things when they don't really exist, just so you can express your intolerance.
Are we, as a country, tolerant of terrorism?

The fact is, Jami, the United States is strong because we have the freedom to tolerate what we want to tolerate, fight to end what we refuse to tolerate and, most of us, have the intelligence to realize that what each individual chooses to tolerate is a personal decision.

Kelli   October 14th, 2008 3:59 pm ET

She scares me

Myrna Stecker   October 14th, 2008 4:49 pm ET

I am really disappointed in your taking a political stand on the upcoming election. I am addicted to Court TV and love watching the "real" court cases and listening to different views of lawyers, but I do not like your attack on Sarah Palin. You are calling her a liar. I really want to continue watching your court program time slots, but you are really making it very hard for me to TOLERATE your political views.

Spider   October 15th, 2008 12:30 pm ET

"Tolerant. And I guess that’s better than intolerant. But is that the best we can do in this country?"

And what would you consider the best this country can do, Jami? Have everyone whole heartedly endorse everything that you agree with?
How self-serving and arrogant you are.

tammy h   October 15th, 2008 8:48 pm ET

Let's hope that God is tolerant. Why are we concerned about what she thinks about gays? There are much larger issues facing this country. WHY NOT LET EVERYONE BE RESPONSIBLE FOR THEIR OWN MORAL CONVICTIONS, and stop basing our selection of the next leader of this country on issues better left to God.

Starr Miller   October 15th, 2008 9:10 pm ET

What ever happened to the fact that we are electing humans with faults?

I do not see one candidate that is perfect. Sure Sarah Palin has faults and sure all her opinions will not be the same as mine, but I applaud her in her stands for that in which she believes in. She is a strong person who is not afraid to make a stand, regardless of the popular stance on the issue.

I also would like to direct a comment to spider. Jami never said anyone should be tolerant of all things. Just tolerant to change.

We as a nation seem to be becoming stagnant in our views, even to the point where we feel it is alright to force our ways on to other people. Just look at the war were are in right now. Who in their right mind thinks this is a fitting tribute to the many that lost their lives in 9-11? I for one feel we are wrong for this, but now we have started it we must finish it, I am proud of our military members and their strong sense of patriotism. But, who are we to say how other people should live. We can and do offer citizenship to those that feel oppressed in their home of origin.

We are an arrogant race of Americans that feel we are omnipotent.

Spider   October 16th, 2008 1:27 pm ET

Starr Miller-

I appreciate your comment. However, maybe you should reread Jami's article. There is never a mention of tolerance toward change. She states that tolerance is not the best we can ask for and that there are two kinds of people, intolerant people and those like herself. I stand by my statement, Starr. Tolerance is a personal decision and disagreements among people is something we all have to tolerate.

Miriam   October 16th, 2008 4:17 pm ET

You are quick to point out racism what about sexism. Why of all people, you should be celebrating a woman on the ticket, whatever side. Stop being so quick to find a reason to be negative. There are rights here, people have the right to not like other people. Please stop trying to take that right away.

Doug   October 17th, 2008 7:48 pm ET

The only people that are asked to be tolerant are white people. Do you really believe that there are not racist blacks in this country? What is really asked is that white people be tolerant of a double standard in this country where white people are expected to accept without question any racist acts done to them by black people or organizations on their behalf in this country. This country will never get past race until the double standard is no longer tolerated.......The double standard is breeding hatred.

Duane   October 17th, 2008 8:33 pm ET

It never right to do wrong. If everyone in our country is doing what is right in their own eye's the consequences will be devastating no matter who is President. It is unfortunate that CNN is so bias in reporting on the election. So many talking heads on CNN and not one interested in reporting the truth on any issue.

Jerry Gerdes   October 17th, 2008 8:44 pm ET

As a gay man, I have got to remember to be tolerant. Tolerant of a candidate who refuses to answer questions from the majority of the media. Tolerant of a candidate who fumbles big time to the simplest question. Something like–what do you read? Tolerant of a candidate who chooses to incite hate with distortion and lies. Tolerant of a candidate who has governed a state with a smaller population than the suburb of Chicago I recently lived. Tolerant of a woman who has been found to have "abused the powers of her office" and still denies it. Tolerant of a candidate who can see Russia from Alaska. Tolerant of a lot of things. Tolerant of people who say "Country First" and then choose to divide. Lucky for me, being tolerant does not prevent me from voting!

rosanne mahnke   October 19th, 2008 9:38 am ET

I,as many would love a women on the ticket. With so many intelligent wonderful republican women out there but McCain pick Palin. She may be allot of things but she is so far not ready to be a heart beat away from being president When she was in New Hampshire she is telling the rally she is so glad to be in the Northwest part of the country. Because she is not informed they hide her away from the media. I saw her at a rally, she does nothing to stop the hate and racism. She seemed to enhance this behavior. Because of my love for this country I can not vote Republican this year.

mrh1594   October 20th, 2008 3:00 pm ET

Spider is right..to a degree..we have the freedom to tolerate what we want..but when people start fighting for things they don't tolerate that affect the lives of innocent people, human beings that just want to marry the person they love..that is most certainly not what makes this country great.

Bruce Ferguson   October 20th, 2008 5:36 pm ET

How could they call Barack Obama a socialist when the same
tax plan was implemented under Bill Clinton.
Everybody prospers when the middle class prosper.(Period)

Lou   October 20th, 2008 6:49 pm ET

Sarar Palin is the biggest joke in all our history, and if the people of these great United States vote that ticket then I will know the END is near.
Barack offer not War but Peace, he show wisdom and intellect that mccain or the muse from alaska has between the two of them.
SHE ALREADY ABUSE HER POWER IN ALASKA NOW SHE WANTS TO DO THE SAME IN OUR WHITE HOUSE.
CNN YOU DON'T PLAY FAIR

Military families in Virginia are experiencing a new face of racism. Thanks to Palin. We have supported each other through several wars. Shipping out side by side. These last past weeks I felt shame in the behavior or these so call veterans. True, I was confused which way to my vote. Now thanks to Palin I know a Vote for Obama is a vote for we the PEOPLE

herman goldstein   October 22nd, 2008 8:43 pm ET

Want a reason not to vote forObama?
He's a lawyer. The last three men who were lawyers and became president , namely Nixon, Clinton ad Bush all lied both to
congress and to the American people.
Why take another chance?

Crystal C.   October 23rd, 2008 3:19 am ET

Are you confused, or wondering what Joe Biden Really meant about Barack Obama potentially being "tested" There is a simple explanation for your worries.. Ever since America has been America, every elected president in history has been "tested". When John F. Kennedy was in office, his test came in the form of the Cuban Missile Crisis, which almost set off a nuclear war, but in the end, did not. Another example.. when George Bush was elected. very soon after Alkaida operatives, under Osama Bin Laden's direction, flew a plan into the world trade center buildings. None of these things are Intentionally committed against the U.S.A, or the presidency for that matter, by an inside culprit, they simply happen, naturally, due to the inevitable dis-agreements, threats, economic differences, hatred, etc.. issues that every country suffers from around the World!. Every president in history, in every country has been un-intentionally "tested" by the powers from another country.. If this did not occur, obviously, there would literally be world peace, people!. This is simply what Joe Biden was conveying when he made his statement, and obviously alot of people with little or no "common political sense" understand what the Hell he meant, Omg!. Also, what Joe Biden meant when he said "It's not going to be apparent initially; it's not going to be apparent that we're right." obviously, has a similar meaning; not every president in history was praised for his decision making, but eventually.. we got through it, and it was later apparent that it indeed, Was the correct thing to do!, (Just like Abraham Lincoln freeing the slaves!). If after reading this, you still do not understand, or get the point, as simple as I have put it for you; then perhaps you should not be voting in the first place. Thank you for your time... and good luck!.

steve pulcino   October 23rd, 2008 4:29 pm ET

Sarah Palin has her rights to think the way she does after all she is just going by the word of God. As a Democrat I feel it is my duty to set things right. Freedom of speech remember it works both ways. And far as Mc Cain is playing fair and has a clean race it's yes on that as well.

Armin Zertor   October 24th, 2008 10:30 pm ET

The bias of the liberal media in this election is unbelievable. I have
never seen the media so biased toward one candidate in my life.
CNN and MSNBC have stooped to all time lows in their criticism
and personal attacks on McCain and Palin, while giving Obama and Biden a free pass on almost every issue.

I for one, and hope many will follow, will never watch CNN or any
NBC channel again.

When did the media and reporters stop just reporting the news and begin working for one candidates campaign

I real crying shame, is what it is.

Hey CNN, are you going to deem this appropriate for viewing????

Ronda   October 25th, 2008 1:34 am ET

If Jami's comments suprise you, please raise your hand.

Didn't think so.

Toni   October 25th, 2008 4:12 pm ET

Now it seems you are grouping people's personal opinions and convictions as intolerant because they are different from yours? Please. Remember that being "intolerant" of one thing does not mean a person is "intolerant" of everything and vise versa.

Regina Susek   October 25th, 2008 8:33 pm ET

Am I tolerant or intolerant? Yes, I am tolerant of my fellow man/woman regardless of race, creed, religion or sexual orientation as long as they are law abiding and do not look to harm me, my family or my community at large. We all have to answer to God for our own souls and those we led into sin. I am NOT my brother's keeper. As Dennis Shulman said in NJ, women will find a way to get an abortion, legal or not. I have a hard enough time saving my own soul. I am a proud Roman Catholic. I am having a hard time this election. I am in favor of Obama. Yet, as my mother always said, you are known by the company you keep. I still have nagging questions about Ayers, Wright and others. Michelle Obama, I was told, said in her thesis at Harvard, "I am black first". Wish that I had had the opportunities she and Barack had . I graduated in the to 10% from HS, Magna Cum Laude from my alma mater and then forced to go to work. I earned my 2 masters degrees at night. Who will I vote for?, I really don't know. All of the candidates have their faults. We must all weigh the candidates, be tolerant of them and make an educated decision. But, WE ALL MUST VOTE!

Jewel   October 25th, 2008 9:20 pm ET

Honestly, i don't care about Sarah Palin. She isn't ready to be vice president. Until she does Meet the Press or some serious political program then she doesn't exist to me.

Comment on the economy to Wolfe Blitzer:
Everything is way too expensive. The reduction in the value of homes will hurt the boomers but make owning a home possible for people in their twenties and early thirties. The housing cost bubble needs to be pricked.

Howard MacDonald   October 27th, 2008 10:42 am ET

Not a comment just a question.
Has Sarah Palin ever seen the inside of the house or the senate?

john rupp   October 27th, 2008 11:04 am ET

Has our system of Government in the U.S. stopped working
for the people?

George   October 27th, 2008 5:30 pm ET

Will the black vote be overwhelmingly in favor of Obama? Will the vote clearly show which groups are tolerant and which groups are extremely biassed?

Virginia   October 27th, 2008 10:25 pm ET

Sarah Palin and John McCain is just live fish flapping out of water. You cannot get a straight answer out of either one of them. Sarah has prove that she is out of her league, she is clueless when it comes to politics and foreign policy. When she was meeting with the United Nations and her response was that she was stunned that there were so many foreigners. Its the United Nations daa!!! The world is not just black and white Sarah what planet have you been living on? Everything John McCain is for she contradict him. Out of all of women that are in the Senate and State Representatives why would he pick a woman who has the intelligence of a 3rd grader. Amazing. Why John Why

Spider   October 30th, 2008 4:14 pm ET

Crystal C.-

Very interesting take you have on the Biden blunders. It was well written, if one ignores the misspellings and grammatical errors. But, honestly, it reads as the blabberings of a Obamabot zombie.

Joe Biden made the statements about Obama being "tested" in order to elevate Joe Biden in the scheme of things. Pure and simple, self aggrandisement. This is the same man that told us a few months ago that Hillary Clinton would make a better vice president.

Historically, Presidents have been tested. That's why we, the people, fret over the qualifications of the candidates, in order to get a better understanding of how they might handle the tests they will inevitably encounter. When a candidate does not have the experience or the record to effectively portend his reactions to an unknown crisis, many of us balk at giving him the pilot's seat.
I'm not sure about your use of the words "un-intentionally tested". Did Russia set up ICBMs in Cuba unintentionally? Did Osama send the aircraft into the twin towers unintentionally? But I will use the word unintentionally, correctly, I might add. You unintentionally brought up a good point when you suggested that some Presidential decisions are initially considered incorrect, but history proves them to be correct. Years from now history will show us that invading and politically changing the face of Iraq was the correct thing to do. That is, if President Obama doesn't send us home, with our tails between our legs, before the job is done.

Once again a follower of the Obamination has shown his/her elitist attitude. "My ways and my views are so much more intelligent than everyone elses." Yet, it is always so very easy to destroy their ideas and views, simply by presenting another view.

John N Alexander   October 31st, 2008 1:32 pm ET

Regarding your last word on October 31. Jami Jami Jami the demicrat you are. You probably attended the same church as Obama has for the last 20 years. So I guess you have the same outlook as Obama. That's scary that you have the same face! The same demicratic face that Hillery has. Her problem like yours is that Hillery stood by her man even knowing he was getting it on the side. How proud did that make you feel? Oh, you don't have feelings because you are a layer and we all know how most people feel about layers. Thanks, now I know why I am a Republican!

Spider   November 3rd, 2008 10:21 am ET

John N. Alexander-

Now, we all know why you're a Republican.
You can't spell LAWYER, because LAW is part of it..
