October 2, 2008 Closing arguments follow courtroom fireworksPosted: 12:36 PM ET
NEW YORK - The fate of ex-football great O.J. Simpson will soon be in the hands of a Las Vegas jury. Closing arguments take place today in the armed robbery and kidnapping case. If convicted, Simpson could face the rest of his life behind bars. The judge and defense attorneys thought Caldwell said that Thomas Scotto, the one and only star witness testifying for Simpson, had been thrown out of a premliminary hearing for "tampering with a witness." That did not happen. It turned out that Caldwell was referring to "Mrs. Scotto," not Scotto himself. Scotto, a close friend of Simpson's, testified earlier on Wednesday that two key prosecution witnesses tried to extort him for $50,000. After the incident, Scotto claims that Simpson's former co-defendants, Clarence Stewart and Walter Alexander, demanded the money, saying, "This thing went bad and O.J. got them involved in this, and he better call them." Scotto told jurors that McClinton also said, "You don't know me that well...I'll shoot everyone up."
