A friend in need

Posted: 03:27 PM ET

NEW YORK – Just when you thought you'd seen all the colorful characters this case has to offer, enter Tom Scotto, arguably O.J. Simpson's best friend.

Simpson was best man at Scotto’s wedding. The whole reason these two defendants were in Las Vegas was for Tom's marriage to his wife Sabrina. And unlike so many of Simpson's other friends, Tom Scotto has stood by O.J. Simpson, through thick and thin, and even in the face of yet another criminal case.

So it's not surprising that Scotto took the stand to testify for the defense. What is surprising: The depths to which the prosecution was willing to sink to discredit him, first by suggesting, without foundation, that Scotto put out a hit on one of the state’s witnesses.

And just in case their pandering to stereotypes about Italian Americans didn't work, prosecutors then called back their lead detective to the stand who suggested that the Scotto’s had tampered with witnesses, which of course Tom Scotto has not.

Scotto was willing to endure all of this as Simpson’s sole defense witness. You never know who your friends really are until you need them most. And whatever you think of O.J. Simpson’s friends, there is no question that Tom Scotto is a friend, indeed. And that’s the Last Word.

When did Ressio get the recorder out of the room? An oj didnt do it then an now ,

David   October 2nd, 2008 4:21 pm ET

I would like to download the whole trial so i can view it without breaks
so i can relay facts to people who should try and engage me about this case theres always someone commiting about oj based on what someone told them and not what they herd/seen for themselves
hopefully some reporter will post a utube of inside viewings in full or maybe cnn will will boost your ratings how about it??

John J.   October 2nd, 2008 4:22 pm ET

What a fiasco for the defense! Detective Caldwell blurted out in the jury's presence that Scotto had been kicked out of a preliminary hearing for witness tampering! Sure the judge tells the jury to not infer anything from it but the damage is done to Scotto and not because he is an Italian American as Jami would have us believe.

lotusjani_33   October 2nd, 2008 4:32 pm ET

You are very right. And just by listening to the D.A. closing statement, boy! is is EVER demonizing O.J. He even said thanks to Mr. Riccio we have everything taped? Since when the tapes of a crook count to prove a D.A.s case? I think Rogers is desperate to convict O.J. for his own agenda. I sure hope the jury can see beyond what it really is: damnation to O.J., there is no armed robbery, there is no kidnapping, only a D.A. that wants to be glorify by a conviction to O.J. but I am sure he is GOING TO WALK, MR. ROGERS, HEAR ME?

Gina1   October 2nd, 2008 5:05 pm ET

I know who MY true friends are. They stand by you and take everything thrown at them as you do for them. A true friend never lies for you, just the facts. Scotto seems very truthful to me. He and his wife must be disgusted by the whole thing. What a horrible memory of their wedding which should have been such a happy time for them. I hope the jurors can separate this case form the murder cases. They are toally unrelated.

lorraine of california   October 2nd, 2008 5:42 pm ET

Why are all of O.J.'s friends thugs....including this Scotto character? You ever hear the saying "You are judged by the company you keep?!" If they checked into Scotto's background they would probably find skeletons, too. He looks real shady to me. If he is O.J.'s "best friend", O.J. isn't very selective about who his friends are. None of these guys are "true friends"....they all are involved with each other depending on what they can benefit from each other. They all make me feel like I need a shower.....to wash the dirt off. I fortunately can wash it off....none of these guys ever can. They are dirty all the way through!

Liz   October 2nd, 2008 6:40 pm ET

Im not sure they ever said when recorder was removed, Ressio prob got recorder after all the cops left the rm.

Jim N   October 2nd, 2008 6:46 pm ET

How really dumb does the defense think the jury is. I am assuming these are intelligent people. It is so obvious that he is just trying to help his friend OJ by lying about being extorted by one of the thugs that went into that hotel room. Scotto was so scared, so taken back that he invited the same person over to his house and continue to talk to the same guy. Come on, please if you are going lie, make it a believable lie. Nothing and I mean nothing changes the fact the OJ and his thugs went into the hotel room and robbed two people at gunpoint. Case closed. Conviction. The rest of it is just wasted air and court time.

j. renee   October 2nd, 2008 7:14 pm ET

Where does Simpson find these friends of his? Hanging with these types of thugs and goons, he'll be back in a courtroom soon!

Mr Galanter keeps whinning , "OJ only wanted his stuff back", this "junk" was not OJ's,,,it was awarded in a civil trial to the Goldman family for the brutal murder of their son, and the mother of Simpson's own two children.

In OJ's next trial, Jami Floyd will defend OJ, Nancy Grace can prosecute, and Catherine Crier could preside....No, I think we should keep Judge Glass, she's kept this trial and all these jokesters in check. Good job Judge.

j. renee   October 2nd, 2008 7:19 pm ET

After the trial, and OJ's free, he should round up this group and maybe they can get their guns and tape recorders and set out to find Nicole's "real" killer.

RubAdub   October 2nd, 2008 7:38 pm ET

Where are the guns used in the "robbery"?

Pat   October 2nd, 2008 7:43 pm ET

One witness for OJ and it happens to be his best friend.
How come his best friend didn't go with him to retrieve his stuff?

michael k   October 2nd, 2008 8:26 pm ET

I agree that he is a friend, which I feel with OJ means he is easily manipulated, and easy to lie to.

Kathie, Ontario. Canada   October 2nd, 2008 8:47 pm ET

Did you really expect anything less from the prosecution than the stunts they pulled with Scotto? They've pulled every other stunt
in this trial.
The prosecution laid down with their stray dog plea bargainers,
they were bound to wake up with their fleas all over them and
their case.
The prosecution learned their lessons in dirty tactics well from
their star witnesses.
You know the ones I mean, the self confessed gunmen they
more than willingly are putting back on the streets.

who   October 2nd, 2008 9:25 pm ET

I was watching closing arguments from the peosecutors and the damn thing cut off. after today it is over the jury deliberate. I been watching for hours and wont see the end I am steamed. I could care less about the debate tonight.

Mike Hill   October 2nd, 2008 11:25 pm ET

FIrst, I think it is kind of funny hearing a defense attorney bemoaning how low a prosecutor will go to win a case. Second, gosh isn't it pretty clear that after the prosecution got done with Scotto that it appears he was pretty much lying about the supposed "threats" against him, third, as far as the alleged threat by Scotto to "put a hit out" on one of the witnesses, isn't it pretty obvious to all of us NOT on the jury that had CJ took the stand that allegation would probably have been proven , or at least substaniated and fourth, how hard up do you have to be for friends when you have to settle for a double murderer for the best man at your wedding.

aida   October 3rd, 2008 12:10 am ET

Once again, you have proven that some of you guys hear the wrong thing. The detective never said: Mr. Scotto". The judge again did her little performance, and Gallanter did not hide his bad manners and spoiled behavior. Thank God we will not see him again, unless, simpson does another stupid thing.

ROBERT U.S.   October 3rd, 2008 12:24 am ET

There is an old poem (author unknown). Birds of a feather flock together. drug addicts flock together. alcholic flock together. Robbers ,swindlers and theives flock together. Who was O.J. Simpson flocking with. That right a bunch of criminals from the victoms to the accomplices. You know the verdic. O.J. Simpson was acting like he was forest gump through the whole robbery.

pat helfrey   October 3rd, 2008 8:29 am ET

Jami,
I feel exactly the way you do, however I do not feel that this jury will be fair and impartial as they promised to do. I believe in the jury system, but when it comes to OJ Simpson, there are no fair and impartial juries. I don't know what happened in California in 1994, the only people who truly know what happened, are Nicole, Ron & the killer. If that's OJ, then he will live with that! I'm not an OJ fan, and I am a white woman. I honestly watched every bit of this trial on my computer through the CNN website, and my one question is, "Why are Simpson and Stewart being so overcharged, even the people who said the were in possesion of the guns, got real sweet heart deals, and I guarantee this supposed "No nonsense judge" will give all of the flip co-defendants probation. I pray I'm wrong, but I don't believe I am..

Christine Karvonen   October 3rd, 2008 8:55 am ET

I totally agree!! Thank God for true friends!!

casino   October 3rd, 2008 9:08 am ET

Scotto did what he had to do to protect his friend O.J!! And if it meant LIE under oath he did that too!! With a so called friend like O.J who needs enemies?? O.J is his own worst enemy!!

Kathie, Ontario. Canada   October 3rd, 2008 9:23 am ET

What a total disgrace todays events were in that Las Vegas court.
The prosecution’s witness Detective Caldwell, blurted out that
Mrs. Scotto was kicked out of the preliminaray hearing for witness
tampering. That was a total fabrication. He had absolutely no
first hand knowledge of that he used rumour as his testimony.
Does Judge Glass do the proper thing according to law and
grant a mistrial.. NO!…. Instead what she does is yell at the defense
for requesting a mistrial and doesn’t say a word to the prosecutors.
Could her bias be any clearer.
At first they thought the Det. said Mr. Scotto , but upon Yale Galanters
insistance they had the testimony read back and found that the
witness had said Mrs not Mr. Scotto.
The judge then reads a feeble , half hearted admonishment.
After the jury was brought in Owen with a huge grin on his face
continued to ask improper questions to Galanter’s constant objections. Owens did get the witness to admit he said Mrs. not
Mr. Scotto. Galanter was not allowed to cross examine the Det.
and point out that what he said did not occur for the reason he stated.
Instead, the jury is left with the impression that Mr. Scotto could
have gotten his wife to tamper with witnessess.
Am I surprised that this happened… not really. Afterall, this is the
way the whole trial has been allowed to proceed under Judge
Glass’s rulings.
Kudo’s to Yale Galanter for standing up for his client and refusing
to let Judge Glass railroad him and have her way of having all
her shenanigans to coverup this mess stated off the record.

Alice Miner   October 3rd, 2008 10:37 am ET

This guy appeared to me to be on some kind of drug. He kept his eyes closed allot.
He does seam to be a good witness but his story changed too much between being questioned by the defense and the prosecution
I do believe he was truly trying to help O.J. but maybe tried a bit too hard. He came across as someone that would do anything for his friend including "half-truths.

Marion   October 3rd, 2008 10:54 am ET

Jami, it seems you are the only one that is fair on Court TV/Tru TV. I have watched this trial beginning at 9:00 am when it comes on in the East until it goes off at 3:00 pm. The one thing I have to complain about is that from 9:00 am until 3:00 pm in the East, especially today, I expected to hear FULL closing arguments, not snip-its.
How can a question like "how did the prosecution's closing argument go" is ridiculous when all we hear is what, so far, Ms. Bloom wants us to hear.
I hope the rest of the day's coverage let's the viewers like myself hear the closings verbatim.
Thanks, for your coverage.

casino   October 3rd, 2008 1:07 pm ET

Marion, Many of us watched the complete trial on our computers...If you wrote a comment on your computer you could have watched it also.

pat helfrey   October 3rd, 2008 1:09 pm ET

Marion, in order to see trials in full, without commercial interruption, you need to watch it on your computer at: Cnn.com/crime. It usually starts at noon (for OJ trial). There are a few comments on here by people who should check facts..... OJ Simpson was never convicted of those murders..... In your heart you may feel that he is, but guess what, unless a jury finds him guilty of such he is not!!!!!!!!!!!!!!, regardless of how any of us feel!!!!!!!!!!. To be honest with you , I truly feel so bad for Mr. Goldman and his daughter Kim, they lost a person in a very vile manner! I don't know how one goes on after such a thing. But I do feel that in this Country when someone is found guilty in a criminal trial, they should not be subjected to wrongful death trial, when the person was originally a suspect in a murder, but acqitted.
I really feel the Goldmans could heal better and faster if they would turn to God instead of vengenance. Remember, the Good Lord says, Vengenance is His!", niot ours!!!!!!

Anthony Myles   October 3rd, 2008 2:18 pm ET

Wow can can the people on court tv be any more bais. Why must O.J.'s past trial be brought up in this case? He will be found not guilty if these juriors have any common sense and not as much hate in their heart like the people on here and the media.

nancy p   October 3rd, 2008 4:38 pm ET

why feel sorry for the goldmans,,,,, listen,, they have been at this for 13 years already,, let it go,, you cant bring ron back with money,, and thats all they seem to want,,,,,,,,, even the browns do not want any part of this,, they said it on the oprah show last year,,,,,with that said,,,,, and i agree with some folks here that judge glass's behavior was appauling,,,, purely pro- prosecutor,,,,,,, and i think that,, should be investigated for a possible collusion or coersion,,,,she disrespected yale galanter and the defense's team every chance she got,,, with sustaining objections from owens and rogers,,,,,,, this trial is NOT about the goldmans,, its an alleged armed robbery case ,, and it was not a burglary nor a kidnapping case no a robbery,, even the victims didnt seem victimized,,,,,,, i am hoping for a not guilty verdict for oj simpson and cj stewart,,,,,,,,,,,,,, 13 years ago has nothing to do with now,,,,,,, and i oj walks on this one,, stay out of trouble ,, and stay home,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,and surround yourself with people who do not want money from you,,,,,,,,,,, simply put

Jimmy N   October 3rd, 2008 6:24 pm ET

Why are all of OJ friends and acquaintances look like crooks and low lifes. Who else would want to be associated with this double murderer and armed robber?

Kathie, Ontario.Canada   October 3rd, 2008 8:16 pm ET

OJ is guilty of murder, spouse abuse, robbery and stupidity......lock him up!!!!

link   October 3rd, 2008 9:35 pm ET

Scotto knew prior to PLANE plans to VEGAS.

casino   October 4th, 2008 4:34 am ET

FINALLY the JURORS got the verdict of GUILTY right!!

G. E. Smith   October 4th, 2008 1:34 pm ET

Everytime i try to get out–they just keep pulling me back in. Ha ha ha meet my best man–the convicted double murderer O. J., wheres my orange jumpsuit, Simpson.

Heard in the hallway in back of the courtroom as they cuffed and lead the juice away,,"but it was my shyt, they should have aquit".

Shell   October 4th, 2008 2:02 pm ET

Jamie Floyd,
I am sure you are dissapointed the jury found OJ guilty. It was so obvious that you had your mind made up for the get go that he was innocent. You as an anchor should be unbiased.
Even if he had not hung around with thugs it would have been only a matter of time that someone like Simpson would have gotten him self in trouble with the law. This was his fourth trial in court. Maybe now he'll have time to write another book on how he was framed on this go round. Boo Hoo

Mysha   October 5th, 2008 12:36 am ET

LOL, what goes around, comes around. Jami, no matter how you try, you can't make a silk purse out of a murderer. He may spend the rest of his life in jail, but he should really be on death row.

The trial was fair, the defense always claims misconduct when they loose. I'm looking forward to the crocodile tears from the defense on Mondays show......

Larry   October 5th, 2008 11:21 am ET

Im sorry but this Mr. scotto looks and appers to me to be on drugs or something is wrong with him!!.

Sharon Douglas   October 6th, 2008 10:14 am ET

Ifeelthat the prior trials of OJ's were a factor in the juries decision, in spite of what theysay. If 5 of them thaought that he got away with murder 13 years ago they would not, in my opinion, be able tolay those feelings aside and dothe correct thing. From what Iheard of the trial, OJ should not have been tried, let alone arrested. It was a case of rushing to judgement. Jami, you have been very fair in your comments onthis case and did not let your feelings for OJ come into them, unlike MS Bloom.

Dick Jackson   October 6th, 2008 11:02 am ET

Jamie,
I am so sorry that you have lost your faith in the jury system I also lost my faith 13years ago. i amsure you must also lost yours 13 years ago or did you?

Dick Jackson   October 6th, 2008 11:09 am ET

Jamie,
I AM SO SORRY THAT YOU LOST YOUR FAITH IN THE JURY SYSTEM, I ALSO LOST MY FAITH IN THE SYSTEM 13 YEARS AGO, I AM SURE YOU MUST HAVE LOST YOUR FAITH AT THATY TIME OR DID YOU
i HAVE REGAIN MY FAITH fRIDAY NITE.

Lois   October 6th, 2008 11:51 am ET

Scotto didn't tell the police about the extortion attempts he claimed that both McClinton and Alexander tried with him? Are you kidding me? A friend would have ran to the police with this information. So, I can only conclude that this friend lied for his friend. Indeed.

Angelo   October 6th, 2008 11:55 am ET

Jami,

Why was it so awful for the prosecutors to try to discredit OJ's witness, Scotto? You seem to have no problem with the defense efforts to discredit the prosecution witnesses. Scotto is just another one of OJ's shady chartcter friends. You know it an I know it. Even if Scotto's testimoy was true, the bottom lin: the overwhelming evidence proves the charges beyond a reasonable doubt. There were guns; victims were held against their will; property was taken under force, OJ's or not. P.S. all the property clearly did not belong to OJ and whether he wanted it returned or no, it was tolen from the room under gunpoint.

Chris   October 6th, 2008 12:55 pm ET

Scotto .......What a stupid idiot !!! He should be in a jail cell with his buddy OJ>

William Laski   October 6th, 2008 5:27 pm ET

You here a lot of talk about this verdict being payback for the injustice in the murder trial verdict of 1995.
As I recall the buzz back then was that that verdict was payback for the Rodney King beating and all the the other injustices that blacks were getting from the L.A. P.D. for many many years. That jury was with out a doubt bias. To bad for Scotto he's going to have to find a new famous low life friend to hang out with.
William Laski

ALEX   October 7th, 2008 9:44 am ET

wow what alot of haterd im so glad `youll never be a jury of MY PEERS it seems you watch and listen and dont understand NOTHING PAYBACK for WHAT? the goldmans this wasnt or shouldnt be about them it was about people making money fast from oj BAD JUDGE BAD COPS BAD RICCICO BAD MCCLINTON BAD ALEXANDER BAD RODGER the appeals got to see how one sided this was and make things right wake up people hope YOU never end up in court

Cindy   October 7th, 2008 11:54 am ET

Great Job Jami....at least you see and report what evidence reveals..
This Judge needs to get a new job

lizouttavegas   October 11th, 2008 6:00 pm ET

I had a neighbor say.."OJ was tricked"..& I guess, in a way, he was..but he was not coerced...ergo: guilty. However, what I find so awful, and odd, was that on a weekend he was in Vegas to celebrate a marriage of an old friend, & hopefully to see other old "friends", he thought to himself "oh, before I throw on that tux for the shindig, let me just get a few of my overweight, criminal type buds together, & pull off a robbery, from a former business associate!"... Who thinks like that? ever? Its like trying to get a date with somebody at a funeral!
Ive got one word for OJ....karma.

BJ   October 13th, 2008 12:11 pm ET

A friend in need a friend indeed!!! Why did'nt Scotto go with oj when he was ask to participate in these crimes? OH... Scotto claims he was all tied up with his wedding, I bet he sure was glad he had that excuse to fall back on, because he knew his friend oj was going to go do something very much against the law,and Scotto really did not want go to jail with his friends oj & cj. Just why ... being the friend that he claims to be to oj,did't he talk oj out of committing these's crimes, mabe handling it a differnt way or going to police with him,or calling oj's attorney for him. no one can convince me scotto did not know about the guns, or the whole PLAN..he knew ..and that's why he really did not go with oj when oj ask him to go, I really don't blame him for that though, but I do think he is a whinny pathetic person just like the rest of oj's gang, Sickening!! PRAISE TO THE JURY!!!! PRAISE TO THE D.A.!!!! AND...PRAISE TO THE HONORABLE JUDGE GLASS!!! THE SYSTEM DOES WORK!!! Oh.. and for oj and his gang ...BIRDS OF A FEATHER DO FLOCK TOGETHER!!!!

charleen   October 13th, 2008 12:32 pm ET
