Celebrity time for celebrity crime

Posted: 05:45 PM ET

NEW YORK–At least once a year we have a big celebrity trial around here.

There was Phil Spector last year. Michael Jackson before that. We had Robert Blake, Jayson Williams, and back in the day, William Kennedy Smith. But O.J. Simpson is the granddaddy of them all.

And now he's back fighting for a fair trial. Some folks are still talking about what a plus his celebrity is, as if he's getting some unfair advantage from it. But he's not, because O.J. is not just any celebrity. He's the guy who was acquitted all those years ago. And even that verdict wasn't about O.J.'s fame, it was about his fortune. O.J. had the resources to secure the best defense money could buy. Resources to match the state, wit for wit, dollar for dollar. Resources to put the prosecution to its proof and to rebalance the scales of justice.

Celebrity trials aren't about whether the celeb is getting some sort of special treatment. They’re really about the way we treat most defendants who come through the system, because most defendants don't stand a chance. And that's the Last Word.

My last word . is THere is no doubt that multiple crimes occured.. the real question is WHO CARES.. Well I DO.. but obviously alot of persons opining on this site don't, as well as the Hosts of CourtTv. for I have heard about every justification there is. I.E. It was his stuff. NOT a FACT. ( Yet to be determined). He seen no gun. YES HE DID. (you all know it.) Never Told anyone to bring a gun. YES he DID. (you all know that too) IT DOES NOT MATTER IF THERE WAS GUN OR IF THE STUFF WAS IN FACT HIS. MERELY TAKING A BUNCH OF BRUTES IS ENOUGH THREAT. Do I think he regrets it YES. but TO LATE. IF he took the loot, all Jamie's points are moot. OJ should get plenty, I should say at least twenty..

Erma   October 1st, 2008 7:47 pm ET

I THINK THE PROSECUTORS SCREWED UP AT THE END OF THE TESTIMONY, WONDER WHY? DID THEY FEEL THEY DIDN'T HAVE A GOOD CASE IN FRONT OF THE JURY? I DON'T THINK SO, I THINK WHEN THEY GAVE ALL THOSE FELON GUYS PLEA BARGAINS IT MADE THEM LOOK PRETTY BAD, I KNOW IF I WERE ON THE JURY WHICH WAY I WOULD GO, JUST FOR THAT REASON, ALL THE MEN INVOLVED IN THE ROBBERY AT THE HOTEL SHOULD HAVE BEEN ARRESTED AND ON TRIAL, WHAT IS FAIR FOR ONE SHOULD BE FAIR FOR ALL.

Scott   October 1st, 2008 8:24 pm ET

This is the biggest case of bias against the defense I have ever witnessed. After watching the testimony all day, In my opinion
This case is a joke, and should have never wasted the tax payers money.

In my opinion The Judge and the DA's office will stop at nothing to get a conviction in one form or another.

I cannot believe at the very last moment in a trial that a prosecution witness can blurt out a statement, even though it was attributed to a defense whiteness's wife to inflame the Jury and a mistrial was DENIED. The detective knew what he was doing.

This is nothing more then a vendetta, and I feel sorry for the other defendant in this case. A minnow in a big bucket of walleyes

I do agree that Mr Simpson is more then likely guilty of his previous murder trial, but in this case, he if anything should in my opinion get nothing more then the rest of all those classless thugs. One count of conspiracy to commit robbery, and get nothing more then Probation just like the others.

To be honest I hope any conviction gets overturned at the Court of Appeal ,and the Judge gets admonished for her bias.

I also feel sorry for the Jury to have to endur this waste of their time.

Thank You.

C.Jackson (California)   October 1st, 2008 9:07 pm ET

In keeping it real, some people not gonna like what I got to say. Oh well, I don't care. "freedom of speech" OJ is not getting an unfair advantage due to some celebrity status. Folks is just plain pissed off because OJ has the funds and or resources to obtain good counsel. In knowing just that, when OJ gets caught up in some mess and comes to court and so far has walked, people are pissed off. Some people act like they have lost all they dog gone mind because OJ is still loose and walking around. I'm not no OJ fan, but I won't hate on the man for comming to court prepared to fight.

We all know OJ got issues (deep issuess), but through out his carrer he was afforded the opportunity to make a lot of money and live a lifestyle of his choice. With that money and his stupidity of getting caught up in shady issues, OJ needs good lawyers who know how to play the game and not be afraid to stand up and fight. Although it may appear Judge Glass is somewhat bias against the defense. Judge Glass knows what time it is. Judge Glass also knows OJ did not come to court with Ren and Stimpy as his counsel.

Think about it, has OJ took the stand? It's true OJ got issues, but he's not crazy. The kind of lawyers employed by OJ are not your every day counsel, and they don't come cheap. You can't hate on the player {OJ}, hate the game {Our Justice System}. A defendant pretty much gets the short end of the stick in legal issues, unless they got some money to get a good lawyer. Moreover, whether OJ is right or wrong he has a right to a fair trial. No matter what we believe he did or did not do.

Jean Winstead   October 1st, 2008 9:34 pm ET

Jami, you stated that what we learned is that OJ has good attorneys. You said his money bought a leveling of the playing field. You said he was acquitted in a murder trial but you never discussed his civil trial and the fairness of it. Obviously, OJ still has lots of money unless you believe Yale Galanter works pro bono. Do you honestly believe that OJ’s cohorts, had they not turned state’s evidence, would have been capable of hiring Yale Galanter? I believe OJ convinced these guys to help him, they should carry guns (or at least McClinton) since he had a license to have a concealed weapon, allowing HIM to be intimidating and discourage any resistance from the victims. You justified OJ’s trying to retrieve his OWN property. You said he (as a black man) didn’t have the presumption of innocence, you said his compadres set him up and rolled him over. Well, I think OJ set them up and they rolled him over. All played the same dangerous game and OJ can pay the high priced attorneys and the guys he convinced to do his dirty work couldn’t. Does that justify them turning states evidence? At least as much as OJ is justified to rob his friends through coercion and intimidation; whether he had the gun or someone else did. OJ didn’t beat his wife, OJ doesn’t rage while driving, OJ didn’t kill his wife and her friend, he didn’t abuse his daughter, he didn’t hide valuables to avoid a judgment, and OJ didn’t enter a room with the intention of robbing someone at gunpoint. It is always someone else or someone is lying. Maybe he didn’t do all of these things, but he’s not the all-around good guy that some people portray him to be and he’s neither guilty nor innocent due to the color of his skin; and the presumption of guilt or innocence is also not determined by the color of his skin.

Denny, Midland, Tx   October 1st, 2008 11:23 pm ET

Jami, I fully expect them to convict OJ........This is will be a mis-carriage of Justice....People have to remember...Cops lie.........

This is a tailored made case.......plenty of witness for sale......

Many will make a buck of the back of this black man....this is sad..

As many have before!!!!!!

Brian, Detroit, MI   October 2nd, 2008 4:41 am ET

But in this city, most of the black people aren't screaming that they will riot if the verdict doesn't acquit. So now this trial can actually be fair for the defendant as well as the state.

Sherry   October 2nd, 2008 9:00 am ET

Everyone who comes in contact with Simpson find themselves needing an attorney. He is a trial magnet. And, he always comes out smelling like a rose. Chances are in this current trial, he will be found innocent........HE'S OJ!".............and all the rest including CJ will have either jail time or probation. That's the way it is, OJ, according to some, can do no wrong. I find it disturbing.

Audrey   October 2nd, 2008 10:03 am ET

CJ Stewarts cousin said CJ was a Loan Officer at the time...did she not mean Loan Shark?

David Salverson   October 2nd, 2008 10:57 am ET

Here we go again letting low life scum Thomas Riccio profit on a criminal act and we keep putting this loser on TV interviewing him like as if he does anything positive for society.I HAVE AN IDEA IF HE BELIEVES IN KARMA AND SAYS HE'S NOT DOING IT FOR MONEY DONATE WHAT HE GAINS FROM THIS TO CHARITY?

Audrey   October 2nd, 2008 10:58 am ET

If this was not, or was intended to be a robbery why didn't OJ's team use a Bell Boy and cart to take away the stuff instead of carting it away like goons?
"Don’t anybody leave this room" is kidnapping to me, "stand back with your backs against the wall" sounds like armed robbery to me. You don't order someone to do things like this without the enforcement of a fire arm.
Why would the two gunmen say they had guns if they didn’t? This is suicide for them. I don’t think that even $50,000.00 would have saved them from life imprisonment. $25,000.00 each would not be enough to hang themselves on.
The defenses only witness ( Scotto)is a very close friend of the defendant and was not even present during the robbery. He’s not anywhere on tape and it is his word against 2 other people in a dark corner of CJ’s back yard.
He did not report the conversation in the back yard because it never happened that way.

roy arrington   October 2nd, 2008 11:28 am ET

is ignorance of the law an excuse? it appears to me that the state has proven everything they charged mr. simpson with and his only defense is 'oh, i didn't know i was breaking the law i just went to get my stuff back'?

christine in virginia   October 2nd, 2008 11:51 am ET

if you ask me there all a bunch of liers. i wouldnt believe one of them on a stack of bibles

Kim   October 2nd, 2008 12:07 pm ET

Thanks Jami, that makes me feel much better. If you have money you can do anything you want and get away with it because you can hire the best defense. Your Final Word just goes to show that there are probably innocent people in jails because they were railroaded by the government and didn't have the money for a decent lawyer to get them out of a jam. Lord knows, our public defenders and states attorney's are overloaded with criminal cases and can't give personal attention to each one. If a defendant can't afford a private attorney they just have to take the deal offered by the state and do the time. I have personal experience in this and you will never convince me otherwise on this issue.

Spectorfan8   October 2nd, 2008 12:29 pm ET

I know that there is interest in the upcoming re-trial of Phil Spector. It would be great if InSessions were to carry it, like they did last year.

OJ is old news, I'm tired of hearing about him. Let's get on to the Spector Part 2.

Jamie,
You do a wonderful job on your show. It is my favorite one on InSession.

Mysha   October 2nd, 2008 12:58 pm ET

You know Jami, if you go to any prison or jail, I think you'll have a hard time finding someone to actually say "I did it". They are all innocent, funny how crimes are committed, but no one ever does them!!

I may not know the law, but I do thinks its illegal to take a gun to "recover" your own property. Even if he didn't know if the guns were there, its still an Armed Robbery. As far as the others men involved are concerned, they may have gotten deals, does that make them dishonest. I'm sure OJ could have gotten a deal, but in his case he just will never "man up" to the things he has done wrong.

I think he believes he's the "Teflon Athlete", an entitled individual, who got away with murder, and can walk away from any crime.

MISTRIAL OF THE CENTURY

I know these prosecutors and the judge hope to
be the heroes who finally put OJ away. Instead,
the will forever be known as the most biased,
unfairly run court that ran the Mistrial of the Century.
What a total disgrace todays events were in that Las Vegas court.
The prosecution’s witness Detective Caldwell, blurted out that
Mrs. Scotto was kicked out of the preliminaray hearing for witness
tampering. That was a total fabrication. He had absolutely no
first hand knowledge of that he used rumour as his testimony.
Does Judge Glass do the proper thing according to law and
grant a mistrial.. NO!…. Instead what she does is yell at the defense
for requesting a mistrial and doesn’t say a word to the prosecutors.
Could her bias be any clearer.
At first they thought the Det. said Mr. Scotto , but upon Yale Galanters
insistance they had the testimony read back and found that the
witness had said Mrs not Mr. Scotto.
The judge then reads a feeble , half hearted admonishment.
After the jury was brought in Owen with a huge grin on his face
continued to ask improper questions to Galanter’s constant objections. Owens did get the witness to admit he said Mrs. not
Mr. Scotto. Galanter was not allowed to cross examine the Det.
and point out that what he said did not occur for the reason he stated.
Instead, the jury is left with the impression that Mr. Scotto could
have gotten his wife to tamper with witnessess.
Am I surprised that this happened… not really. Afterall, this is the
way the whole trial has been allowed to proceed under Judge
Glass’s rulings.
Kudo’s to Yale Galanter for standing up for his client and refusing
to let Judge Glass railroad him and have her way of having all
her shenanigans to coverup this mess stated off the record.

How can O J be charged with armed robbery, when the DAs office dropped all charges against the people who apparently carried guns

Michael D. Hemphill   October 2nd, 2008 1:51 pm ET

Mysha,

To be convicted of a crime, it has to be proven without a reasonable doubt that you are in fact the person who committed the crime. It is a known fact that some prisoners in prison, right now, are innocent due to certain factors.

Anyone can make an accusation against you. The cops can arrest you and place you in jail for 48 hours while they investigate your case.
Now, what if they find circumstantial evidence which can be used to convict you?

You can go to prison very easily just because of an accusation. Wouldn't you want a good lawyer to defend your case and without having to give over your life savings for it?

Unfortunately, there are many prisoners that do not have the money and some have sketchy backgrounds that will hurt them in court. So, these people plea bargain for a lesser sentence instead of the max.

Are they guilty of this crime, maybe not, but because of those certain factors, they can't take the chance of going away for life.

Yvonne Dulakis   October 2nd, 2008 2:06 pm ET

This is the most boring and rediculous trial I have ever seen. I have heard the same statements so many times I have them memorized. The jurors must be so uninterested by now. The whole thing seems so unprofessional and unnecessary. Just let it go.

texas   October 2nd, 2008 2:31 pm ET

DA did not drop all charges against the gun toters, they plead guilty and are waiting to be sentenced. So if they are guity OJ is too.

Kathie, Ontario. Canada   October 2nd, 2008 2:48 pm ET

davey boy .... EXACTLY .. or how can they convict him and CJ of kidnapping when the men with the guns got the kidnapping
charges removed.

Michael D. Hemphill   October 2nd, 2008 9:23 pm ET

The DA gave the other guys all plea deals for their testimony. None of these guys will do time in jail, they are ether going to be on probation or time served because of their testimony.

SO, yes, the charges might as well have been dropped.

Julie   October 3rd, 2008 8:06 am ET

julie ,ontario canada, i don t know who to believe, they all seem to want to write books on O J, and out for themselves, they are all thugs ,someone i believe wants O J to pay for for the murders he got off on ,.maybe O J should get alife ,or get life??????????

Vickie Curry   October 3rd, 2008 10:15 am ET

I'm not a friend of OJ, but I tend to feel that the judge haas made it very difficult for him to get a fair trial. and He will probably be convicted. and the whoe thing will wind up in the appeals court.

lloyd kline   October 3rd, 2008 10:18 am ET

hey, davey boy and kathie, ontario canada. it's called plea bargaining. if you are caught for a crime and you don't want to face a full sentence for what you have done you admit it and get a lighter punishment. i'll be willing to bet that mr. stewart is kicking himself in his butt right for turning down the plea bagain offered to him. o.j. is not untouchable and i believe mr. stewart thought he was.

art still   October 4th, 2008 2:48 pm ET

Finally! The Goldmans Get Some Closure. Maybe O J can send him his 30,000 dollar retirement check. How much does it
cost to live in prison? Maybe Jami should send them a letter of
apology.

elle owen   October 6th, 2008 10:38 am ET

i am surprised that there are still star struck people who feel that OJ can do no wrong. If you feel that he cannot get a fair trial on any crime he is therefore free to act and commit any crime he has the desire too-how wonderful to be above the law. If he is such a law abiding citizen why didnt he call the police and inform them that his "stolen" property could be located in this hotel room?-oh i know-they wouldnt have believed him! Why gather a posse and storm the room-the intent to intimidate the "thieves"? If this was the guy down the block everyone would be happy to have the thug off the streets however because OJ is a star he should be let go to again take the law into his own hands. I sometimes wonder how some defense attorneys can sleep at night-it must be the overstuffed mattresses they sleep on from the money they collect from defending these "star" criminals.

Yvonne   October 6th, 2008 1:23 pm ET

Mr. Simpson's attorneys' and others keep saying Simpson couldn't get a "fair" trial because the jurors couldn't set aside the judgment in the murder trial. On what basis do they assume all jurors in this case felt Simpson was guilty of the murder charge?? Perhaps some of them felt the not-guilty verdict was correct!

Shayleen   October 6th, 2008 9:44 pm ET

PLEASE SOMEONE TELL ME WHY IF THE "STOLEN PROPERTY" WAS TAKEN BACK IN THE LATE 90'S, THERE WAS A FOOTBALL SIGNED BY OJ AND DATED 2003?

lucia howell   October 8th, 2008 11:29 pm ET

o.j should have known that the country would never forget the trial of the century when his wife was murdered, and that is very sad. the
whole country was just waiting for o.j. to mess up,they could not
prove that he murdered his wife ,so they got him for something i think
is pitiful.his trophies and ect..i do not know what to say, a grown man
staying in trouble all of the time.i do not think that life is right for him.
i hope that he won't get life, but most of all i hope that o .j grows up.

Ricky Kendall   October 10th, 2008 12:18 am ET

Hello everyone,I'm from Texas and just want to here the issues that each person has to offer? All this trash olitics has a place when we are in a good position yet when we are in diar strates we have no patience.

Shirley   October 10th, 2008 8:09 am ET

I am sick and tired of Lou Dobbs. Listen to his rhetoric...Government leaders should stop talking and do something. If government was not talking to the American people, what do you think Mr. Independent would be saying? Something like this I’m sure…Government won't even come forward and let the American people know what is going on. THAT IS WHAT HE WOULD BE SAYING. No matter what government does, he will have an accusing finger to point. SHUT UP LOU. We know what you think and how you feel and WE DON'T CARE!!!!!!
