September 15, 2008 O.J. Simpson presumed innocentPosted: 01:16 PM ET
NEW YORK - So O.J. Simpson is back on trial and wants us to believe he's innocent, all over again. Can you believe that? Well I can. And I will presume Simpson innocent until the state proves him guilty in this case. Because the presumption of innocence is not about Simpson. And it's not about me, or you, or any one individual. The presumption is about our country and what it stands for. Think about it, if you lived in another country, most other countries in fact, and were arrested for a crime you would be presumed guilty. It would be your burden to prove your innocence. Not an easy thing to do when you're just one person up against the power and persuasive resources of the government. In this country, not so. Freedom is our most cherished value. And for the state to take it away? Well, they have to work at it. In every case, even this one. So you may not like O.J. Simpson. You may even think he's guilty in this case. Or the last one. Or the one before that. But take away his right to a fair trial and you take away that right for all of us. And that's the Last Word. -Jami Floyd, In Session anchor Filed under: Uncategorized |
