"Raising the Bar"

Posted: 09:04 PM ET

NEW YORK–"Raising the Bar" is not just another TV show about lawyers. This show is on a mission to tell you the truth about the system from the inside out.

"Raising the Bar" premieres on TNT this Monday, September 1. It's all about criminal defense attorneys and their clients. And it's about time. Because for too long criminal defense attorneys have been the foil for Hollywood prosecutors, easy fodder for lazy writers who want to appeal to a law-and-order public.

And that may seem harmless, but over time playing defense attorneys as the bad guys is actually undermining justice. Add to that a bevy of blond talk show hosts out for blood and the presumption of innocence is a thing of the past.

Which is all well and good until it's your son or your husband or even you who is charged with a crime. Then you'll want that presumption of innocence. Then you'll want a good lawyer to take your case. And you'll want a jury that can be fair. So if you're lucky, a show like "Raising the Bar" will help rebalance those scales of justice, before it's too late.

That's the Last Word.

I wish this show was on earlier! I am a big supporter of the defense...everyone has the right to one. For those of us that work, it is on too late....

"Raising the Bar", I hope it's more Hollywood than fact. If we truly have judges on benches who demonstrate such personal contempt for defense lawyers and conduct themselves in a Halverson type fashion we might as well eliminate the constitution and adopt a judicial system like Iraq, Russia, China,Iran or any other country that mutilates or kills its citizen's with those same citizens having no opportunity (adequate legal defense or investigative personnel) to confront their accusers and demand their day in court. No judge has the right to abuse our system of justice. In fact, if our judges aren't humbled by the realization of his/her awesome responsibility to ensure our citizen's rights are protected and morally demand a fair and impartial hearing we are in bigger trouble than can possibly be imagined.

This show was a major disappointment. Pretty much from the get-go it was predictable and seemed very unrealistic. I've got to say I felt a bit led astray by you Jami. I won't be tuning in to "Raising the Bar" again.

I am going to love this program. A lawyer, with empathy? I like that, but also one that will challenge and push the envelope. I am sitting on the edge of my seat when he does that. He dares to anger the gods.

I have been on jury duty two times and it scares me to think how apathetic those people were to sort out the facts and make a decision.
They didn't want to be there and they sure as hell didn't want to be picked for a trial.

I too believe in a good defense, & the advaserial system we support. But my question is: when did it become the job of defense attorneys to make up any ridiculous story they can conjure in order to get a person off? I thought the job was to make sure the system was worked fairly..not to come up with "the dog ate my homework" scenarios for situations as disturbing as Casey Anthony's child missing & presumed dead...& yet..the defense attorneys on Nancy Grace's show can come up with 10 GOOD (?) reasons why she's innocent!!!! Please!!!.. & by the way...on topic... I thought the show was an awful show with bad acting & bad actors. Raising the Bar is,within itself,, a huge misnomer...they didnt raise it..the acting lowered it..!

Yes, but too bad the show was poorly written, horrifically unrealistic and a cliched version of a legal tv show.

What a shame that the producers had an opportunity to do something worthwhile and in the process, just perpetuated the myth, that the only people we can defend are those that are innocent.

A crock at best.

I have to agree, this show was a major disappointment. I guess I expected something that wasn't predictable. I will give the show a few more episodes before deciding to quit watching. If it continues to be so predictable, I will be done with it.

I am a litigation paralegal and work in a firm where one of our primary areas of practice is criminal defense. I LOVE this show. It was very realistic and certainly portrayed how the scales of justice can be tipped significantly in one direction or the other by a "difficult" judge. I work 60 – 70 hours per week and will continue to tune in and if I cannot, then I will set my DVR!
