MA v Entwistle: Day 11

Posted: 09:55 AM ET

WOBURN, Massachusetts–For almost two hours Friday, the Woburn jury who will decide Neil Entwistle’s fate listened to him speak loud and clear, in an audiotaped conversation that took place just days after the murders.

The defendant maintained that he found his family dead after he returned home from running errands on January 20, 2006. His account of the day, as he was questioned by Massachusetts State Police Sergeant Robert Manning was somewhat consistent, but when pressed for certain details, Entwistle hesitated and stumbled over his words with an almost Hugh Grant-like affect.

Entwistle is on trial for the murder of his 27-year-old wife, Rachel, and infant daughter Lillian Rose, who were shot to death in the family's rented home. He has pleaded not guilty and has maintained his innocence in the case.

So now the defense is offering the suicide theory in the
Entwistle trial. Rachel must have shot Lillian, then herself. She then ran to her parents' home, replaced the gun in its cabinet, returned home to lie down by her baby and die. Or, Neil found the gun & replaced it in its cabinet to avoid the suicide cloud over his wife. Oh, brother!

What a terrible loss to both families. 3 lives cut short way too soon ... baby Lilly loving mom Rachel and Neal who will never live the life a 30 year old looks forward to. What happens to a man who feels he has no other way out of a marriage or relationship but to murder his family? Has society done this to other wise stable men? is this a sociopath again living a lie? Why cant we as a society spot this before it ends in tragedy? My heart goes out to all the family left behind...and to Neal I am at a loss as to what to think. Hate, anger, pity, fear, shock?
God Bless everyone involved in this horrible tragedy.

i've heard of the british "stiff upper lip" before, but this man has just seen his baby and wife shot, he says. how can he talk to the police with no more emotion than as if he is ordering a pastrami sandwich. he talks about them like they are total strangers. i know people that feel more sadness over total strangers that are harmed than he shows about his own baby and wife. i know that doesn't prove he is guilty, but something is not right here.

How can Elliot Weinstein sleep at night???In my mind he should be locked up with Entwhistle. To even consider murder-suicide is mind boggling.

Dorothy Craft   June 23rd, 2008 12:20 pm ET

This guy clearly has no clue. He never thought he'd have to come back to the U.S. He just wonted a clean slate, so he got rid of all his ties here and split. He is clearly guilty....At least he didn't get on the stand and try to pass off the sob story his defence team was spouting.

Patty   June 23rd, 2008 12:26 pm ET

Neil Entwistle does not have a defense! If he did, then his attorney's would have some witnesses testify in his behalf! For his attorney's to suggest his wife may have committed sucide, then they should have something to back that up and they don't! They just sealed his fate!

Marilyn Sails   June 23rd, 2008 12:37 pm ET

The defense's suicide theory is an insult to not only Rachel's memory but to her family, and the jury should be insulted as well.....shame on you defense team.

Janet Fiore   June 23rd, 2008 12:55 pm ET

I find it quite telling that Neil Entwistle having only been gone a few hours, returns home and not once mentions that he is concerned for his own life by a possible intruder. Instead, he hangs around the house and uses his computer!

Hmm, could be he knows there's nothing to fear from a stranger?!

STEVE MADER   June 23rd, 2008 1:08 pm ET

Living in Massachusetts and watching and reading about this trial. How could you not know that Neil Entwistle did this. WHO ELSE saw these 2 bodies dead. WHAT FATHER OR HUSBAND on the face of the earth could see their wife and daughter DEAD, and then fly to England to mommy and daddy? WHAT FATHER OR HUSBAND would NOT come back to see their daughter laid to rest and to give her a final kiss or hug? NO ONE that I know and I'll bet NO ONE that you know. Even it was a suicide that he couldn't carry out, WHY did he run? All the WHY questions can only be answered by one person.
There were THREE people in that bedroom that fateful day. Two are DEAD, and the third person is ALIVE, and unfortunately under Massachusetts law will never truly pay for his crime

Bart Barrett   June 23rd, 2008 1:24 pm ET

This dude is toast. I am still baffled by the idea that this could have possibly been suicide..I guess the Defense is getting paid to come up with something.

Lumppio   June 23rd, 2008 1:26 pm ET

If Rachel Entwistle got the gun & committed suicide, how did Neil know where to bring back the gun?

ERICA HARVEY   June 23rd, 2008 1:59 pm ET

CAN YOU SAY GUILTY!!!!!!

Laurie Colton   June 23rd, 2008 2:13 pm ET

Was it ever revealed how Entwistle could have known the gun beloged to his father in law (in order to return it- to cover a so-called suicidei) if he was not the shooter who had the gun to begin with.
can't imagine he knew all the guns owned by his father in law

brent lyons   June 23rd, 2008 2:14 pm ET

as bad as the evidence looks, lets wait for the jury. we rely on them to make the right decisions. for all we take we must pay... but the price is cruel high.

DIANNE KENNEDY   June 23rd, 2008 2:22 pm ET

I WAS WONDERING, HOW DID NEIL ENTWISTEL MANAGE TO NOT
GET ANY BLOOD ON HIS CLOTHES, HAIR, SHOES ETC AFTER HE SHOT HIS WIFE, THEN HIS BABY?

DIANNE KENNEDY   June 23rd, 2008 2:24 pm ET

ALSO, IF HE IS GUILTY, AND I KNOW HE IS, HOW DID NEIL ENTWISTEL MANAGE TO NOT GET BLOOD IN HIS CAR, AND NO BLOOD ON HIMSELF, I.E. HAIR, SHOES, CLOTHES?
DIANNE KENNEDY

Laurie Colton   June 23rd, 2008 2:28 pm ET

Are we to assume that Entwistle knew the identity of all of his father in laws guns? and if if he did not then how would he have known who the gun beloged to ( in order to return it to cover up the ABSURD suicide theory ) IF HE WERE NOT THE SHOOTER....

When I heard the defense closing argument I asked myself if I had missed something? It doesn't add up.

Has no one notice the comment he says when he "returns" to the house. That he had been gone for over 2 hours and the downstairs was still a mess! The way i hear his comment was that he was disturbed that she not cleaned up the dishes while he was gone for 2 hours. Might have been the final straw for him?

Sylvia T   June 25th, 2008 2:41 am ET

Did anyone ask Neil Entwistle what errands he ran on the day of his wife's and baby daughter's murders? He said he fed the baby and put her in bed with her sleeping Mom. Why didn't he clean up the mess before going on his so-called errands? and why was he "annoyed" that Rachael had not got up and cleaned up after him? Is this what a 'loving husband' feels - annoyance with the little messes that a little one makes? His guilt is just so obvious. Rest in peace Rachael & Lily.

gail adams   June 25th, 2008 3:03 am ET

may god be with both families.

trNancy H.   June 26th, 2008 1:32 am ET

I too believe Neil was convicted before the trial ever started. People will say anything to be a part of a high profile trial as this one was and it would be very hard if not impossible to weed out these jurors who say what they need to say just to be picked.

Also, it always annoys me that no matter how a defandent reacts in court (if he cries, it is a show, it he doesn't cry he is a cold hearted monster) they do not get a fair and balanced commentary. Look at the Summers lady, she was convicted because of her behavior after her husbnd died and the actual forensic's proved that she did not kill her husband!

Our justice system needs a lot of work to ensure that the innocent remains innocent until proven guilty by the facts of the case, not the preconceived prejuidce from the press and/or family of the victim but the actual facts, forensics that prove he/she is guilty as charged OR not guilty from lack of actual evidence brought forth from the prosecution, including forensics, DNA and witnesses, etc.

I am not saying Neil is innocent by any means, i am just saying we must be careful not to convict in the court of public opinion.

Obviously another enabled son by parents who just wouldn't see any faults in their child. Does Scott Petersen ring a bell? I was appalled at the remarks of Neil Entwhistle's parents. They know he is guilty and yet thet sullied the victim's name. If they were so sure that their dead daughter- in- law had a history of depression, why weren't any medical experts called? How low class! Yvonne Entwhistle didn't even have the courtesy to stand in the courtroom when the judge left. Her little "baby son" has finally been held accountable for his despicable act. HE IS GUILTY!!!

Linda Brewer   June 26th, 2008 4:20 pm ET

Neil has had the strangest affect throughout the trial–so calm. He seems to almost enjoy all the attention.
