McGreevey v McGreevey: Over…at least for now

Posted: 10:02 AM ET

ELIZABETH, New Jersey–On Wednesday, both sides in the New Jersey divorce trial of former governor James McGreevey and his estranged wife, Dina Matos McGreevey, delivered their closing arguments in an Elizabeth courtroom. Predictably, the attorneys on each side agreed on virtually nothing – but each lawyer strenuously insisted that the Union County family court judge deciding the case should favor his own client and reject the arguments of the other side.

John Post, representing Matos McGreevey, argued to the court that her estranged husband’s testimony, in which stated he couldn’t make much more than his current income of $48,000 a year, was “incredulous” and a “farce.” McGreevey’s attorney, Stephen Haller, compared Matos McGreevey to a commercial featuring a luxury cruise ship passenger whose life of royalty has come to an end. “It’s time for her to realize her gubernatorial ship docked, and now is the time for her to just go home.”

It may take several months for Judge Karen Cassidy to sort through all the trial’s evidence, consult the law, and ultimately render her decision. But one thing is certain: at the time the judge issues her ruling, she will also officially be granting the McGreeveys a divorce.

So if this trial should indeed proceed to a third phase – which, in large part, depends on the monetary conditions of the judge’s decision in this phase – Jim and Dina Matos McGreevey would no longer be man and wife.

Mr. McGreevey wants to pay $100 a month in child support – let's see if he could live on $100 a month.

I don't care how much James McGreevey earns. Dina Matos McGreevey needs to get a job and support herself. The only support James should pay is child support. In this day and age no ex wife needs alimony. As women we are perfectly capable of supporting ourselves. We do not need a man to support us. Dina get out of the dark ages. Or maybe you are just greedy, or is this purely an act of revenge?

I have enjoyed Jean's coverage of trials but I would hope, in this day and age, we would refer to Jim and DIna as 'husband and wife' rather than
'man and wife' which says to me 'man and his property'.

Dina should just walk away. She has a well-paying job, a respected position for a hospital. Jim McGreevey is dirt in my eyes after having read both of their books and much of the media coverage. I would suspect that Dina is very angry, any woman is when confronted with adultery in your marriage. And divorce (i've gone through a nasty one myself) is a poker game when dividing the marital assets...you aim higher than you expect to get. I would not let Jim McGreevey have custody of my children in such a situation either! Dina should just walk away...you're the one in the better position. Jim becoming an Episcopalean minister? Please. He's only doing that now because it assuages a lot of his guilt. He duped a lot of people, he'll only continue to dupe people as time goes on.
