Day 6: McGreevey v McGreevey

Posted: 09:56 AM ET

ELIZABETH, New Jersey–Sitting in the small Union County courtroom listening to the testimony of Dina Matos McGreevey, one thing was readily apparent to me - her estranged husband, former governor Jim McGreevey, wouldn't look at her. I was close enough to McGreevey to observe that he was looking down, and seemed engrossed in reading a document.

Every now and then he would look up after a particular comment, but then looked right back down at the document.

Although her testimony has only just begun, Matos McGreevey testified that from the very beginning of her relationship with McGreevey she would help his gubernatorial campaign and political career, organizing fundraisers and acting as a bridge between the Portuguese and Hispanic communities he represented, since she is fluent in Spanish.

There are a lot of issues in this case that are firsts here in New Jersey. Can a politician have increased income as a product of their "celebrity goodwill" when they can't earn extra income while in office? And, if Jim McGreevey turned down offers once he left the governor's office can he now claim he has no celebrity goodwill? And finally, with all the help that Matos McGreevey appeared to give her husband in his quest to be New Jersey's governor, did that effort itself help him acquire celebrity goodwill?

According to the state's case law, celebrity goodwill is a marital asset that should be equitably divided between a couple during a divorce, and that's what this case seems to be all about...money.

After seeing Dina Matos on the stand, I think she should have been elected the governor of NJ!!! Much more work-oriented and credible than Jim.

Margie   May 29th, 2008 10:55 am ET

It was a business deal from the start on both of their behalfs. And the both of them should pay back all that money for using the system.

Rae Vaillancourt   May 29th, 2008 12:43 pm ET

Has there been any indication as to when the Phil Spector retrial will begin?

Carolyn   May 29th, 2008 12:51 pm ET

Sad to say but she might not have had her child if she knew he was gay and would be left for someone else.

He is very self righteous

Robin   May 29th, 2008 12:56 pm ET

Hasn't Ms. Matos already received "temporary" alimony in 05, 06, 07, and 08? Isn't this period about as long as the marriage? Is this just ignored when calculating whether she should get it at the actual dissolution of the marriage?

marlene   May 29th, 2008 1:16 pm ET

I think that the lady needs child support but she does not deserve
alimonies. The child is a baby correct,? all it wants is the love of its Mother and Father . It doesn't care about the price of clothing ect. Everyone goes threw good times with money and bad we learn to live with what we have available to us.

Jen Nichols   May 29th, 2008 1:27 pm ET

"For better or worse" seems to have taken on new meaning for the fueding McGreevey's. Us common pedestrian citizens live with the uncertainties of financial circumstances and make allowances as required. And what has happened to the $3000 Vera Wang gown and the rest of the Nordstrom clothing Ms. Matos accumulated? Does any of her wardrobe count as HER assets? I wish I could afford to shop where she does CURRENTLY. Sell your clothing Ms.Matos and join the ranks of the little people who shop at Walmart.

Shellie DiLauro   May 29th, 2008 1:48 pm ET

Dina Matos met, married, cohabitated and had a child with the man who's focus was becoming governor. She accepted those challenges and responsibilities helping him to achieve his goal. From testimony thus far, Mr. McGreevey's thinking seems stunted. From the time of his televised resignation announcement, I saw him as selfish, spoiled and self-serving. He showed audacity bringing his parents and wife on stage when they had nothing to do with his announcement. They suited his needs at that moment. He's also stated that he's not supported his oldest daughter this year. Bringing children into the world should be his very first responsiblity and he should now delay whatever he wants to do thereby acknowledging their importance in his life. But, Jim McGreevey is the most important person to Jim McGreevey. His parents, his first wife, Dina and now Mark cared for McGreevey. That seems to be his modus operandi.

I think Matos is taking this battle to far. With the behavior and demeanor she is showing in court shows she was putting on an act as a First Lady.

Chris Dovorany   May 29th, 2008 2:14 pm ET

Jim McGreeveys attorney is the slimiest thing I have ever seen on television. I need a shower.

Pamela Moulton   May 29th, 2008 2:24 pm ET

This is a woman that is nothing but a gold digger. if she used her own money to pay for all of her own expencese when they were together, then why does she need his money now. I beleive that he should pay for child support, but all the extras she is asking for should not be given to her.

Brian   May 29th, 2008 2:26 pm ET

Matos-McGreevey has no right to claim the perks of a political office she never held, nor does she have a right to expect to maintain the same type of lifestyle which, by law, was only temporary to begin with. It seems to me she's more interested in getting back at her husband for the public humiliation she suffered (though I can't imagine she had no idea he was gay while they were married – rumors to that effect were all over the state almost from the moment he took office).

Linda   May 29th, 2008 2:46 pm ET

"What does Center for Disease Control have to do with divorce statistics?" asked Mr. McGreevey's attorney – well think about the possible impact of a spouse secretly sleeping with people who are unknown to you: bringing home STD's, AIDS, etc.

Jane   May 29th, 2008 2:58 pm ET

Ms. Matos doesn't need the judge's protection. She started this process with her ridiculous claim to be supported at the same level as the governors wife, as well as her fraud and libel claims. Mr. McGreevey went through serious cross examination. She can, too. Four years of marriage does not entitle her to alimony at all. He should pay reasonable child support, though.

Heather   May 29th, 2008 3:30 pm ET

I think that the former Gov. is lying. Earlier, he claimed that he couldn't have a job while in seminary. Well as a minister and former seminarian, I know that that's completely false. Moreover, if money doesn't matter to him and if he's taken a vow of poverty, why is he living with a millionaire. This guy is a worm. And I hope he one day learns to be a decent person.

Debbie Ivester   May 29th, 2008 3:55 pm ET

Dina Matos certainly should be awarded some monetary value. After all, she wasn't the one who breached the marital contract. Additionally, she had continued to work through out the relationship and marriage therefore making a contribution. Mr. Mc Greedy has decided he doesn't care about money and I am quite sure it is because his standard of living has not declined. He should be ashamed that he is not doing everything within his abilities to provide for both his children. There are many among us that would love to stop working in the present jobs we have so we could take up something we are passionate about. It just simply isn't an option because we have responsibilities to our children. He can wait to pursue his dream a little later after he becomes current with his child support.

Julia Watson Vera   May 29th, 2008 4:16 pm ET

Hi Jean, love your work. Question: Why did the judge allow Mr. McGreevy's financial expert to testify when she admitted she had never worked a celebrity or former politician's case (save for one over ten years ago)? She was guessing and comparing apples to oranges, I did not understand why the judge didn't disqualify her as an expert on this exact situation if she hadn't worked any others at all. I guess anyone can call themselves an expert after working one case many years ago. It is a low thresh hold, or what?

Why do you think Dina's lawyer didn't go for it and just point that out more?

Was Mr. McGreevy under investigation for other matters and would have likley had to resign even if he weren't outed?

Eileen   May 29th, 2008 4:17 pm ET

Enough already , this guy has made a mess of her life and his children. He is so devious looking she should be grateful that he is out of her life, yet he needs to support his children and her.Just his looks creep me out.and he is hiding more then we know.

MA from MA   May 29th, 2008 4:19 pm ET

Fair is fair. Mr. M should help his ex wife and special his daughter at his best effort. Otherwise, he made the gay community looks bad because he proved that he only cares about himself, not his offsprings.

Bess Hamilton   May 29th, 2008 4:35 pm ET

Did they both have a wedding in which they VOWED :
For richer or poorer, in sickness and health....TILL DEATH US DO PART!

Welll he knew he was gay as a teenager. He defrawded not only her but his first wife. He wanted these women to help him gain in the political world. HE USED THEM. He has broken his vows, and he should pay until DEATH as he promised.

Who does he think he is! NOT PAYING HIS CHILD SUPPORT FOR HIS FIRST CHILD.

sylvia moore   May 29th, 2008 4:39 pm ET

I think they should leave Mr.McGreevey alone he came out of the closet and is dealing with everything responsibly, why should people put him down and drag his name through the mud, granted his wife may be hurt but life goes on. Deal with it!!!

Lynn Allen   May 29th, 2008 4:50 pm ET

Its all too obvioous his marriage was intended to get him elected. He is a deceitful man and is/has done everything he can to appear bankrupt and avoid paying the prce for being a sleezy character.

carol gallanthen   May 29th, 2008 5:10 pm ET

in her book she said, he does not care about money. during the trial he says he would rather go to school and not make much money. he is not paying child support to the first kid. he does not want to pay on this one.

this is a man who is not a man, he has childish ideas (wants to be president) bla, bla, bla. he is like so many others that wants to play but not pay............

the x-wife is asking a bit much but she should get something for stopping her life and putting her all in a marriage that was just flung into the trash can and now being responsible for a child to raise, which aint cheep.........

debra   May 29th, 2008 5:48 pm ET

Mr. Mcgreevey's attorney is a joke, he is a disgrace to divorce attorney 's for or aganist. He is as bad as one of the OJ attorneys. or even Michael Jackson's. I commend the Judge in this case.
Sincerely,
debra

This case is all about money? DUH!! What else is splitting marital assets about?
