Jensen gets life without parole

Posted: 11:49 AM ET

KENOSHA, Wisconsin Mark Jensen has been sentenced by to life in prison with no chance of parole. Judge Bruce Schroeder said he has sentenced scores of people for murder and has to sentence Mark Jensen to the maximum.

The judge noted, "Mark tortured Julie for years, planned and executed this crime and that speaks to your character."

Defense attorney Craig Albee asked the judge on behalf of Jensen's children to set the minimum parole by statute. "They know what kind of person their father is.”

Albee told the court these children should be able to see their father again. Jensen only became emotional at one point in today's hearing, when the letter written by his two sons was read on his behalf to the court.

David and Douglas Jensen begged for mercy for their father and merely called antifreeze poisoning victim, Julie Jensen, their "birth mother."

I was in court and watched David, who just hung his head. As Julie's four brothers read their victim impact statements David continued to look down, but he clenched his jaw continually while words of condemnation regarding his father and the crime his was convicted of were spoken by his four maternal uncles.

Kelly Jensen, Mark Jensen's current wife, left the courtroom with David without looking at or speaking to anyone.

In the Jensen sentencing who was it that Judge Bruce Schroeder threw out of court. I had just turned on the television and heard him order somone out!

Dan Watson   February 27th, 2008 12:01 pm ET

Way to go Judge!!

Nancy Wharton   February 27th, 2008 12:05 pm ET

I feel really bad for Marks children. I do hope someday they will be able to see their father for who he really is, a murderer!!!!!!!!!!!

Paula Gray   February 27th, 2008 12:06 pm ET

The children of Julie and Mark Jensen referring to Julie as there birth mother is just wrong on all levels. I think the letter from the children may have just convinced the Judge how cruel this man really is.

Sue   February 27th, 2008 12:20 pm ET

The judge in this case did exactly the right thing by sentencing Mark Jensen to life in prison. Not only did Mr. Jensen destroy one life but he destroyed the love of the boys mother, Julie Jensen. No matter what happens between a man and his wife neither party should destroy the love a child has for either parent. In my mind that is the second crime Mark Jensen committed. I also think Mark's now wife was totally involved in the entire crime – I hope she can sleep at night. I know I couldn't.

Judy Bailey   February 27th, 2008 12:28 pm ET

If Jensen didn't intend for his wife to die or have anything to do with it then why just why didn't he take her to the hospital when she was so bad off. Just doesn't make any sense to me. If someone I loved was trying to kill themself and they acted like she did (sick) their butt would be taken to the hospital right now.

Stephanie   February 27th, 2008 12:29 pm ET

I feel so sad for those 2 boys. No one has the right to destroy the love a child has for their parents.

Linda   February 27th, 2008 12:32 pm ET

I cant get it out of my mind how cold Kelly Jensen appeared. Probably it was she who helped with the boy's letter and reference to Julie Jensen as their "birth mother," a most insensitive and deliberate choice of wording. I have to admit that at least Mark Jensen showed emotion during the reading of that letter from his sons. Yet she showed nothing. Was she ever considered as involved in the murder?

Debbie   February 27th, 2008 12:36 pm ET

His new wife knew..She knew

Gerrie   February 27th, 2008 12:37 pm ET

I THINK MARK JENSEN GOT WHAT HE DESERVED AFTER YEARS OF LYING TO HIS SONS ABOUT THE DEATH OF THEIR MOTHER, CAUSING THEM UNTOLD GRIEF. AND THEN MOVING HIS LOVER INTO THE HOME HE AND JULIE SHARED EVEN SHARING THE SAME BED WITH HER THAT HE HAD SHARED WITH JULIE TELLS ME ALL I WOULD WANT TO HEAR FROM THIS MURDER!!!

Blonde08   February 27th, 2008 12:39 pm ET

I cannot believe Julie Jensen's own son had the nerve to call her is "birth mother". I hope to God that a few years down the line he looks back and sees the truth....his father is a heartless killer!

Marion L.   February 27th, 2008 12:43 pm ET

well, how about that..........Justice. However it will take a miracle to let them boys love their mother again

Michele Bartruff   February 27th, 2008 12:47 pm ET

I am elated that Julie Jensens family finally got justice, but it haunts me that her two boys are poisened to the love that their mother had for them. I would like to know who gets custody now of the youngest son?

Cindy in Atlanta   February 27th, 2008 12:50 pm ET

I believe this was the appropriate sentence. I thought the judge, the district attorney, and the defense attorney all did a very good job in this trial, and that justice was done. How terribly sad that the boys referred to Julie as their birth mother. That statement proved to me that Mark did nothing to keep Julie's memory alive for his sons. I also couldn't help but notice that Mark Jensen's parents did not hug or speak to Mark's son or to Mark's current wife. Clearly Mark's actions have sadly ruined many lives.

Nanette   February 27th, 2008 12:51 pm ET

Of course Kelly Jensen was in cahoots with Mark (weather she realizes it or not)! Anyone (male or female) who knowingly engages in a relationship with a married person is IN cahoots with that person in whatever way that relationship has affected the innocent parties. Shame on her for PRETENDING not to know that their affair was a HUGE factor in all of this! They were in this together, each to satisfy their own needs, the moment they first broke their vows until this very day!

Beth   February 27th, 2008 12:51 pm ET

Marks friends annoy me. How do they think Julie's nose got broken. I think the jury got the cause of death wrong. I think she really died from suffocation. I know they are not doctors but they had the evidence in front of them.

Creed, Memphis, TN   February 27th, 2008 12:53 pm ET

Life in prison without the possibility of parole is really too good for Mark Jensen. How dare he (and Kelly) brainwash those children into thinking that their mother did not love them and that is why they committed suicide. The nerve of you psychopaths!!

I truly hope David and Douglas can grow to know the truth about their mother and how much she loved them. If Mark Jensen was sincerely and honestly the "loving" father that the letter read in court portrayed him to be, he would have some decency and tell those boys the TRUTH! He murdered their mother for his mistress. How selfish of him/them. What really upsets me is the fact that these two boys have been brainwashed by their father, stepmother, paternal grandparents, aunts, etc. What a SHAME! I truly hope that these boys can find the truth and closure they will desperately seek one day. Otherwise, they will grow up to be just as mentally disturbed as their father.

My plea to Mark Jensen and only Mark Jensen: Take a few days to think about the lifelong mental stability of your boys, who you claim to dearly love. Be a man and tell them the truth so they can start the healing process of living a happy, loving, wholesome life as adult men and future fathers. Even though you did not want their mother a part of their life by murdering her, does not mean that David and Douglas did not want her in their life. They deserve to know the truth about their mother. Please preserve their mother's memory in a truthful manner. If you think you have been punished now, just wait to see your punishment if you do not tell the truth. Payback will be HELL to endure.

Joey   February 27th, 2008 12:53 pm ET

The family of Julie Jensen will finally have closure. I had a sense from Day One that Mark Jensen was guilty. Just the expression on his face alone showed what an arrogant pompous jerk he really is. If he said his wife was suicidal, I might have bought that, but to say she tried to frame him. Well, that just confirmed what I initially thought. To the brothers of Julie, may you find comfort in knowing all of us out here support you. Justice has been served.

GLENDA DUNCAN   February 27th, 2008 12:55 pm ET

Mark Jensen is the coldest murderer I have ever witnessed in all the years watching Courttv. It is such a shame that the murder's mistress has had the opportunity to raise Julie's children. There is no telling what she has told them through the years. I pray the boys will go to their uncles and find out what a wonderful woman Julie was and I hope they see that Kelli is the reason Julie is dead. Kelli does not deserve to be called Mother.

Ed Mac   February 27th, 2008 1:03 pm ET

I listened to the letter, alledgedly written by the Jensen boys, and am very sceptical. The content and form seemed authored by someone with experienced in essay or thesis creation.
Moving and on point, however contrived, as was the defense at large.
I hope the children someday try to reach out to their Mothers family.

valery   February 27th, 2008 1:04 pm ET

YES JENSEN GOT WHAT HE DESERVES! AT LEAST HE WON'T BE ABLE TO HURT ANYONE ELSE IN THIS OR HIS LIFETIME. I'M SORRY FOR THE BOYS BUT AT LEAST WE KNOW THEY WILL BE SAFE.

AS YOU MUST HAVE NOTICED JENSEN LOOKED DISGUSTED WITH THE JUDGE AS HE HANDED OUT HIS SENTENCE. JENSEN ACTUALLY LOOKED OFFENDED THAT THE JUDGE WOULD SAY SUCH THINGS ABOUT HIM.

JENSEN HAS NO REMORSE HE IS JUST PISSED HE WAS CAUGHT AND CONVICTED.

Nonnie   February 27th, 2008 1:05 pm ET

Judges are to be impartial when hearing a case and in this case I don't think he was. When a trial's venue is changed to afford an impartial jury at a trial, I believe the judge should also have to be replaced by a judge from the new venue's local. Judge Schroeder had the same opportunities to watch or read any information as a local jury would have been allowed to do, allowing him to form a pre-trial opinion.

After watching this trial, I feel the judge was biased and had already decided in his own mind as to the innocense or guilt of the defendant. It was clearly seen at trial the frustration and calls for a mistrial that the defense attorney was having regarding the judge's rulings.

I still believe there was reasonable doubt in this case and I hope Mr. Albee will be successful with his appeals to warrant a new trial for Mark Jensen and hopefully it won't be held in Judge Schroeder's court.

Peggy 2   February 27th, 2008 1:14 pm ET

It is sad this is all pending an appeal of exclusionary evidence in another trial that could allow for this verdict to be thrown out and a new trial started; one without the letter from Julie. It's heartbreaking the boys refer to Julie as their "birth mother." I do not expect the current Mrs. Jensen to stand by her man. This is a death penalty case for certain, were it available in Wisconsin. The sentence is just and the judge is fair.

carole   February 27th, 2008 1:16 pm ET

Thank the Lord Jensen got what he deserved , but while reading the letter to the judge from jensens children, the look on his face was lacking one THING "where were the tears " to follow his reaction??? Did I miss them???

Julene   February 27th, 2008 1:27 pm ET

The correct sentence.
Hopefully he is sent to the same prison as Dahmer.
The sons need to be taken away from Kelly, she has poisoned them
enough.

Nonnie   February 27th, 2008 1:37 pm ET

Unless you didn't notice, Mark Jensen was trying his hardest to hold back his tears when the letter from his sons was read. His lip and chin were quivering. It was plain to see that he was deeply moved by what was being read. Unlike Bobby Cutts crying his eyes out asking for frogiveness because he WAS guilty for the crime.

carrie   February 27th, 2008 2:00 pm ET

These jurors took the time with the evidence given to them. They made the right and obvious decision, as did the judge. The sentence fit the crime. I cannot blame the boys for the letter "they" wrote. Their father and his current wife turned them against their mother for abandonment at such a young and tender age. They are hurting I'm sure on so many levels. I have faith the truth will prevail in the children's case, like it had today in the courtroom.

jennifer greene   February 27th, 2008 2:07 pm ET

Mark Jensen showing emotion? True, he attempted to make his mouth quiver, but where on earth were his tears? That letter (from his sons) caused eyes to swell with tears in almost everyone who heard it. But not Mark Jensen. He is an actor.

chris   February 27th, 2008 3:01 pm ET

Thankfully Judge Schroeder in his statement at sentencing referred to the "mountain of evidence" against Mark Jensen. The risk being that impressionable people would hear only such discussions as the one between Jami Floyd and Craig Albee questioning the discretion of the jury. The court and the jury are there to administer justice in cases of serious crimes. Not to determine whether the prosecution has a video tape of the crime or not.

Jewel Moss   February 27th, 2008 3:20 pm ET

Jenson's son said daddy wouldn"t take mommy to the hospital.
It looks like he could see take for what it was. I really beleive the letter
from the sons was written by his now wife.

Diana   February 27th, 2008 3:33 pm ET

I have not been able to come to a conclusion as to whether I believe Mark Jensen is guilty or innocent. There seemed to be too much garbage allowed into the trial that had nothing to do with his guilt or innocence. One thing I am sure about is the judge had him convicted way before the jury ever did. I believe Mark Jensen deserves a new trial with a fair and impartial judge, then if he is found guilty it would be a fair verdict.

Lauri   February 27th, 2008 3:45 pm ET

I am very glad that Mark Jensen got exactly what he deserved! What to go Judge! Mark will have to live with this every day for the rest of his life. Julie Jensen should be here in life with her children and not Mark!!

Joe   February 27th, 2008 4:20 pm ET

This case provoked a lot of emotion for me, and in terms of an absolute sense of justice Mark Jensen deserves the death penalty. A liar, corruptor of young children, an adulter, a murderer, with little or no remorse. This is the type of people who truly would fit into the death penalty's purpose. No appeals, no death row, nothing. I'd be all for public hangings again or even the guillotine, that's the one thing the French go right.

Cheryl   February 27th, 2008 4:25 pm ET

The Judge put it perfectly!!Couldn't have said it better! Exposed for the evil man he is!

Linda   February 27th, 2008 5:37 pm ET

Mark Jensen got exactly what he deserved. He's a self centered sociopath who sat back and coldly watched as his wife suffered..got sicker and sicker...and finally died. He did this knowing that he was the cause of it all.
I watched the whole trial and there was not one shred of doubt that Mark Jensen did this.
Now he can spend the rest of his life in prison working on those penis drawings he seems to be so fascinated with...what a freak..he's exactly where he belongs!

Lynn   February 27th, 2008 5:40 pm ET

What a guy, can't believe he will be spending the taxpayers money for the next twenty years appealing a just conviction. Now when he goes to showers he can see all of those he wants to!

kauluwai   February 27th, 2008 5:44 pm ET

Presumably the children lived with their mother. If she were a nurturing, supportive parent, I doubt they could be brainwashed to refer to her as their "birth mother." Clearly the children in this case are to be pitied, and hopefully, mentored by sane, caring individuals.

Cynthia   February 27th, 2008 6:06 pm ET

In listening to the letter from the Jensen boys I also felt these were not their words. It sounded to perfectly written to cover all the things that the defense or Mark Jensen would want them to say. Very sad if they are truly this brainwashed. And what can you say about Kelly Jensen and her smug look.

Does anyone know who the man was that was asked to leave by the judge? Very curious to hear who this was.

debbie   February 27th, 2008 6:22 pm ET

jensen is a slug ......creep ........he got what he deserves......

Mercy   February 27th, 2008 6:38 pm ET

Yes, thank the Lord that Jensen won't get out to plan something nefarious against his current woman. He poisoned his wife, but his poisoning started a long time ago as mental and verbal acts against the whole family for his own benefit, he thought. I hope once the fog lifts the children can move on and have a life, whether they ever know the truth or not. But, it is so tuff for them. It's not like they can put away photos and forget. They will always be reminded of all of it.

Marie Levy, Greenwich, CT   February 27th, 2008 7:07 pm ET

Well, he sure got what he deserved! Good for this jury for being able to see through the bull...... to reach a just decision. Thank God some people have common sense. Hopefully Julie's brothers will take this farther and go to court to get vising rights with their nephews. It is criminal that they have been prevented the right to get to know these boys because their father and his current wife have prevented it. ! At the minimum, these boys deserve to know who their mother REALLY was and how she sacrificed to stay with them and how it cost her her life. Maybe then they will see how wrong it is to refer to her as their "birth mother" instead of their beloved mother which is what she was at one time to them before they wer brainwashed by their father and his lover.

Cheryl   February 27th, 2008 7:55 pm ET

Those poor kids were raised by both Mark and Kelly to erase their MOM. If he cared bout his children and wasn't guilty, he would never have had his girlfriend into his home with the chidren so close to their moms death. He didn't even grieve! He had her staying over and movin in. Even if he wasn't in love with her anymore if he wasn't guilty, he would have felt guilty for causing her so much pain. He acted like it was the best thing for him and moved forward like she never excisted . He also for the kids sake would have kept her memory alive and not let Kelly act as though she were their real mother. Only because he was guilty, he got what he wanted and intentionally cut their mom out of their lives. That is crime in itself! Those poor kids. I hope they see their father for what he really is and they get to know their mom again through her loving family.

Helen   February 28th, 2008 8:03 am ET

BIRTH MOTHER-Mark Jensen won- He has erased the memory of their mother.

As always, Jamie Floyd seems to have a hard time finding anyone guilty.

Kathie   February 28th, 2008 8:41 am ET

I find it very interesting that the brother who lived minutes away from
Julie who stated that her mileage was checked by Mark and that
she had to be home at a certain time and that Mark dominated
her existance , never said anything on the stand during the trial
about all of this. Or that he was afraid for his sister being with
Mark. Nor did he say that he ever tried to get her to leave him
because of any abusive emotional actions by Mark.
How could he possiblly know all these things he stated during
the sentencing yet not know she filed for divoroce, had an affair,
was find the pornographic material, seen a pyschologist etc.
The fact Julie went only to neighbours and not her brother who
was so close for help tells me they weren't all as close as
they liked to make out. Funny how these things came out
when he wasn't under oat yet not a word when he was.

Lynne   February 28th, 2008 9:41 am ET

Jean you were incredible you made it so easy to understand this trail. He got what he deserved.I hope that Julie can finally rest in peace.

John Mccleary   February 28th, 2008 10:13 am ET

I watched the trial on my off days.I am happy with the verdict.

jh   February 28th, 2008 6:21 pm ET

jensen and cutts, cry babies cause they got caught.

jh   February 28th, 2008 7:23 pm ET

poor kids have been brainwashed.

jh   February 28th, 2008 7:27 pm ET

thank you judge. every man that murders his wife, girlfriend should get life w/out parole. amen.

Diane Arnold   February 29th, 2008 8:00 am ET

Who was asked to leave the courtroom by the judge? WOuld someone please tell me and the others who keep asking.

Rick   February 29th, 2008 12:16 pm ET

Well their "birth father" is going to jail for the rest of his life

Diane Arnold   February 29th, 2008 5:02 pm ET

I read somewhere that Mark's uncle was the person that left the courtroom.

Dodie   March 1st, 2008 4:35 pm ET

Cynthia. It was just someone sitting in the back. No one related to anyone.

Elizabeth Harman   March 1st, 2008 6:02 pm ET

You know Mark, I can only use the words Laci Petersons mother used. "Divorce was always an option." I can understand that you probably didn't want to pay child support or spousal support....but now, you spend the rest of your life in prison, no wife, no children......etc.

Linda Brown   March 3rd, 2008 4:56 pm ET

This is the first time I have ever commented on any issue. I would like to compliment The Judge In the Julie Jensen case. He is the first judge I've seen control his courtroom. It was refreshing to watch. I'm so tired of seeing these murderers get away with it. ("Hello, O.J. Simpson!")

Hooray to Judge Schroeder! Job well done.

Paula   July 2nd, 2008 11:41 pm ET

All I can think is how the boys father and step mom had a good long time to skew and brainwash the way they thought about their own mother. Of course who knows if he was already doing that before she died in revenge for the affair. She made a mistake but that doesn't excuse his affair and...hmmm let's see..KILLING HER! I hope she can rest in peace and her children find some kind of healing. Children are not pawns, Mrs. Kelly Jensen. If you didn't participate in her death openly, you definitely knew something was going to happen.

Brian H.   July 3rd, 2008 11:18 am ET

This case has some of the fishiest evidence I've ever see, which the prosecution twisted to fit their own warped views, or to pad their resumes for promotion and politics. Judging by the narrow sighted comments of readers here, I seriously fear the prospect of a jury of my peers if I am ever unfairly prosecuted. This case is why Illinois stopped their executions - no telling how many innocent people were there on death row because of a power-mad prosecutor and easily manipulated jurors.
